November 11, 2010, 08:09 AM
Coach Ian has graciously agreed to an interview with BanglaCricket. Looking at all the recent threads and posts, I know we all are clamoring to ask him a thousand questions. Unfortunately, we can't - he has a job to do. I will do the next best thing - why don't you all post your questions here, and we at BanglaCricket will use that as a guide for our interview when we do talk to him.

We will keep this window open for a few days to gather everyone's questions.

Here are my questions...will be very happy if you can ask any of them ! :)

1. How is the preparation going on ? Are you satisfied with the progress of our fast bowlers ?

2. Do you think it is a good idea to put Junaid and Jahurul into bowling practice just before the World Cup ? Do you not think, this may put extra burden on their main duties as batsman ?

3. According to you, what are the key attributes that distinguish a good pacer from ordinary pacer ?

4. Which one do you prefer...1) uprooting the stamps with sheer pace or 2) foxing the batsman with slower butterfly bowl. :)

5. Are you comfortable working with other bowling consultant if BCB appoints him before World Cup ?

6. In this short period, what are the weaknesses that you have noticed in our bowlers ? and how are you working on those ?

7. If you are given 2 years Contract as Bowling Coach, what will be you goals and how do you want to achieve those ?

8. Do you have any future plan to be Head Coach of Bangladesh ? or just happy being as Bowling Coach ?

9. Apart from National team players, have you got any chance to watch any other bowlers in domestic league who seem to be promising ? (i knw...one player that he already mentioned... Rabbi)

10. Where do you want to see Bangladesh Team after 5 years ?

Thats all for time being...will come up more questions later. :)

Why do so many of our pacers have inconsistent seam position at time of release?
Why, given sub-continental conditions do we have more seamers than swing bowlers? Given the flatness of our pitches, air must be where we make the ball do its thing right?
Are you able to give any mini-courses to local coaches to enhance their ability to coach in fast-bowling?
Any chance of you using your county contacts to get Minor County offers for any of the current players (especially pacers)

2) Currently our main attack is SPIN SPIN SPIN, sometimes we even go with 1 fast bowler and 3-4 spinners. Do you think we will be going with 3 fast bowlers and 1-2 spinners any time soon, just like rest of the rest of the team (excluding India)?

4) Are you more close with JF or JS?

I have a few questions....
1. Have you found new pace bowling prospects besides the current crop of pacers with the National Team? if so who has impressed you most?
2. Why do we lack genuine swing bowlers like Chaminda Vaas, Irfan Pathan or Praveen Kumar who are also from the subcontitent? Can you help our pacers develop their skills to swinging the ball both ways?
3. We have lost many close matches during the batting powerplay. Do you have specific plans to rectify this before the WC?

Zeeshan
November 11, 2010, 11:39 PM
I like rommie's question. What the f is the reason for our sissyfication of our players. How come we can't have aggressive, fast bowlers who intimidate batsman and how long would it take for BD to produce a match-winning bowler like Pollock, Lee, Steyn, Ambrose, Waqar, Wasim, Vaas etc. When Lille used to get orgasm from ball hitting opponents helmet, our bowlers make Bruno look more testosterone filled than Al Pacino in Scarface. Besides technique shouldn't we teach them warrior like fierceness working with Mr. Saha hand-in-hand so that only time their name is in the same line as Sissies is when they are renting Spacek's films? Fast bowling is all about attitude and we are yet to have that. Also when i was a kid i read that Wasim and his fellow partners would run 5 miles a day. How much do these lutu-putus (in English namby-pamby) actually run?

And finally Ian what do you think of the Bangla phrase: Beter upor oshudh nai? {in english: No medicine over cane.}

Zeeshan bro, Shahadat did start with a lot of aggression, he used to run up to the batsman and give him the stare. But since people started to hit him all around the park at will, he realised it's[aggression] is best not used.

I think aggression, killer instinct comes from confidence. And the better you bowl, the more wins/wickets you get the more confident you will get and more aggressive you will become. If you look at Rubel bowl in the 4th/5th ODI, he was more aggressive than ever before and confidence was just blooming from his body language.

The reason why Lille, Thompson, Wasim, Akhtar etc had the killer instinct is because they knew they were that bloody good. Let our pacers reach that level and aggression will come as a by product.

Zeeshan
November 12, 2010, 12:35 AM
Umm...............why would you assume by aggression i mean it has to do with "giving the stare" or even worse grunt. And why would you think by aggression i ruled out confidence and killer instinct and all those things? Mash who goes to his locker room and cries is certainly no Joel Garner. By aggression I also mean appetite for total destruction. If you remove the opener in first ball, you should strive to remove two more in the same over.....I am starting to digress from the main topic which is to submit questions; not debate.

because they knew they were that bloody good

Well even if you are not good at least you should STOMP the ground with aura of arrogance that you are the greatest son of a gun alive when you do your run up. We don't need any of that fake niceties like "ji bhai apnee shuru koren..." "naa bhai apnee" "aare na na apnee" when it's both clear that each guy wants the big piece of fish from the curry bowl. Plz.

Thanks, Z. bhai for the initiative. Here are a few related questions:

Q. How important are bowlers these days (on dead pitches) to win matches? Does the required skill set vary based on the format of the game? If yes, how?

Q. In his opinion, for a developing team like us, which is the better (more pragmatic) option for our bowlers: improvement as individuals or improvement as a unit?

Q. How he rates different factors (e.g., talent, pitch condition, speed, variation, control of line and length, swing, life style) in producing good pace bowlers?

Pont mentioned Shahadat and Rubel as the two bowlers he thinks are capable of bowling at 145 clicks consistenly. Rubel we have seen...by why Shahadat who is now just a gentle medium pacer bowling at 128 k? Further, Shafiul is consistently faster than Shahadat at the fastest point of his career. Why does Pont not include Shafi in the list as well?

For the record I would be ecstatic if all 3 were genuine quicks.

That would be great if rajib could bowl at 145 kph consistently. He has 1 advantage over rubel and shafiul which is height. So it would definitely add a variation to our bowling attack. Even with his pace he can get good carry so just imagine if he can be a 140+ bowler for us. If he can make techique changes under pont and adds variations then he can do some good service. The 1st thing he has to do though is fix up his line and length. If he doesn't do that then I see no hope for him. He might not be useful for subcontinental tracks but he's a must for us in tests and in pacy conditions.

Height isn't the only thing that's going for Shahadat. He is pretty well built. And his aggression adds up with that. Plus, he is already more experienced than Rubel and Shafiul (though Shafiul and Rubel are lot better atm). Those 90 odd INT matches he played will come handy if he can apply his height and aggression to bowl faster and better

Strategies: (No doubt you already know the game)
(short term)
Now you know the weather. You know the players ability. You know the pitch (From past videos during February). You know the opponents. Are you working on to develop a strategy, bowling lineup, which type of balls our boys can be effective against others, Who needs to learn what fast and apply on Zim series (testing phase)?

or

You always look at the long term? Equip them with tools. Have them sort out when to bowl what?

Or little bit of both?

Can you explain a little as some examples?

How would rank our spinners attack? How they stack up against Vettori, Swann, Harbi point wise, say 0-10 scale 10 being the best (Murali or Warne)? and why? Where do the lack with comparing the great bowlers, mentally or arsenals and variations?

If we have 3 pacers in the playing 11, do u reckon all 3 ideally should be able to bowl 140k+ atleast 4-6 times in an over? OR do you reckon there should be one Steve Waugh/ Styris type of medium pacer with variations in his arsenal?

Are you approached or are you interested to develop some pace bowlers from the DPL or Academy list so that they can increase options to choose from for the National Team?

Yeah, he is very transparent and open.

BTW - what do you mean "if you really wanted to interview him"? Damn it, who forced me to interview Ian!

Anyway - he graciously answered many questions and we are getting the interview ready to publish tomorrow. We could only take a small subset of the questions, otherwise he would have had to spend the rest of his tenure answering us.

It's live:

"The secret of being able to bowl fast comes from two things only.." - An Interview with Ian Pont

Dr. Zunaid Kazi

Arriving just a few weeks before the New Zealand tour, Bangladesh's new bowling coach Ian Pont has brought about much anticipation and excitement in the fan universe. Here are my questions...will be very happy if you can ask any of them ! :)

1. How is the preparation going on ? Are you satisfied with the progress of our fast bowlers ?

Rabbi)

10. Where do you want to see Bangladesh Team after 5 years ?

nice to see above questions were asked. Thanks Zunaid bhai....it was really good interview :brother_hug:

Here is something I would like to highlight:

BC: Would you be interested in extending your contract past the WC? If yes, what would be your short- and long-term goals and how would you go about achieving them?

IP: I have no plans at this stage since my contract only covers me up to the end of the world cup and it is entirely up to the board whether they wish to re-engage my services. The difficulty always is that other jobs come up and people get approached a few months ahead. I have a highly successful academy in the UK, too. So it's impossible to discuss any plans long term. I am only focused on the world cup now and delivering as best I can to the squad.

--
Read the part in bold. I believe it is to our benefit to re-sign Ian as soon as possible. The Board must act now! Remember what happened to McInnes. You do not decide once the contract has expired, you decide way before that. No one waits for a contract to be over before looking for the next gig. I think we should make a concerted effort to let the powers that be know that they must act NOW.

thats a nice way to put it:D

^ we, fans, know Ian's intention but how can we convey this message to our "matha mota" BCB admins ? BCB are waiting for WC performances but I am afraid, that would be too late to retain Ian, if not Siddons and JF. :(

we fan can mail to BCB and ask them to act quickly regarding future contract of Ian and JF. Even though, i wonder, that will work or not.

BC: Where do you see Bangladesh in 5 years?

IP: I was speaking to someone from one of the opposition teams who said: "if Bangladesh could somehow sort out the way they mentally approach their cricket, they could be a top 4 team." The feeling is the talent is around in ODI cricket for Bangladesh to start the climb up the rankings. But as mentioned it is all about the mindset.

Thats the way to go..we have shakib with this kind of mind state now Tamim is there..soon other 9 will follow

Unless prodded, BCB will wait too long and we will lose the fish. How do we let them know? Email is not good enough. It will not be given weight. If I want a communication to be read immediately, I would send it by FedEx. Nobody can resist reading an overnight mail. Should we make a petition, sign our names and send it to BCB by FedEx? While we are at it, we can include our suggestions regarding matches with a big gun like SL before the WC and advice to have ODI+Test against NZ after the WC.

Reverse swing is different from inswing and outswing (which covers swinging the ball both ways). "Once the ball becomes older and more worn, it will begin to move in the opposite direction to where it would usually swing with no great change in the bowling grip." Do a search and you will find many articles. I like the one at the BBC site.

it seems to me that mash and shafi are the seam bowlers...rubel is the reverse swinger, and nazmul is just a hard working chacha type bowler. in other words, apart from rasel, we don't seem to have any true swing bowlers out of those 4.

but Pont would know better than me.

when nazmul was in for hw was able to swing the ball inwards as much robin can swing outwards.

too me out swing-wise robin swings the most. in-swing wise nazmul used to swing the most.

Same here. Is BCB hearing the clamoring? This has been discussed in BC plenty of times - we don't have the right type of clay to produce fast pitches. In fact even the WACA had been slowing down as the original river from which the clay for its pitches came from had dried up. They found a new source I think. The ICC pitch expert has tried a number of types of soil and clay and we haven't found anything other than "slow & low". I know Nurul Abedin Nobel for a while had a bouncy pitch in the old Chittagong stadium - perhaps we should check where that soil came from.

out of the 4 (rather 5) of mash, rasel, nazmul, rubel, shafiul...only rasel is a true swing bowler gaining movement thru the air. but yeah i guess robin is another one.

Pont coaching Bangladesh as world cup looms

COUNTY CRICKET: FORMER Essex fast bowler Ian Pont is making a big impression as an international cricket coach.

And the bowling coach has his sights set on helping Bangladesh achieve World Cup glory.

Pont, 49, believes the host country are capable of going all the way, in next year’s tournament.

Since accepting a six-month coaching contract with Bangladesh, he has played his part in helping to transform their cricketing fortunes.

They have claimed seven wins from his first eight One Day International matches, including a 4-0 thrashing of New Zealand.

Prior to Pont’s arrival, Bangladesh had been defeated in 27 out of 29 ODI matches, the worst record in world cricket.

But since then they have lost just one in eight, making them the second best-performing international team, behind India.

Pont told the Gazette: “It’s been great for me so far.

“The level of interest in cricket out there is amazing.

“Anything that is of remote interest cricket-wise goes straight on the back page.

“The people want to know anything and everything about cricket out there.

“When I first arrived at the airport there were lots of bulbs flashing and I turned around wondering if there was someone famous behind me.

“But it turned out there were there for me - they were so excited to see their new bowling coach arrive.”

Pont, who played for Witham in Two Counties League division one in the early 1990s, believes Bangladesh have a good chance of making an impact in the World Cup, which takes place in February.

It will be hosted jointly by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, for whom it will be their first taste of staging a World Cup.

“I can’t wait,” said Pont, who claimed five wickets on his Essex debut against Somerset in 1985, claiming the prize scalps of Sir Viv Richards and Sir Ian Botham.

“This is the pinnacle of a coaching career to be at the World Cup as a national coach.

“All of the games are at home and the only time Bangladesh are scheduled to be away is in the semi-finals, if they can make it.

“We’ve managed to give them that belief they need to win games and they’ve started to play good cricket.

“I’m one of five coaches there and we’re all from other countries, like Australia and South Africa.

“We’ve found our work ethic and experience in the game is totally different.

“We can change their culture but we can change their attitudes.

“It’s been a case of getting them to believe that they are good enough and it’s always exciting to see things change.”

Pont believes Bangladesh can give plenty of sides a run for their money on their own turf - including England.

Andrew Strauss’s side will take on Bangladesh in the group stages of the World Cup, which begins on February 19.

Pont added: “England will be underdogs against them in the World Cup, with Bangladesh playing in their own back yard.

“It will also be very difficult for the likes of West Indies and the Netherlands.

“They often say in football that the crowd is the 12th man and the same will apply at the World Cup for Bangladesh.

“They are relatively small grounds with a cauldron-like atmosphere - they will cheer every single run.”

My feeling exactly but first let me say, great interview and article.
As far as getting the mssg to BCB, can't Miraz or Isaam help on this matter? They seem to have some connection with the board and probably would be able to email this article to the BCB highups including Lota.
Or better yet, can you not give this article and ask Dailystar or any other BD daily to release it so Pont's mssg gets accross?
