Now I can't decided where to play a full strength team or 2nd XI team. While I want our 1st XI to get match practice, I also want to give players like Nafees and other benchers a chance, just so they can get a work out and also show themselves.

Ya, rest the main players for this match, full team vs Pak.

both our warmups are DN matches right? good for practice in the real conditions...

i hope that both teams agree to bat and bowl only 11 players, but can play all 15.

that way we can put all 8 or 9 specialist batsman in to bat. and then bowl all our bowlers 5 overs each.

Expecting Canada to put up a decent performance. Havinf left Toronto in mid January, the Canadians are coming directly off a 2-week conditioning+training camp at Dubai's Global Cricket Academy (arguably the world's best cricket academy) and an easy win over the Netherlands in a practice match.

This team is much different and younger than the one we faced in 2003, or even the one we played against in the tri-series before the 2007 WC. The current squad is more stable, and team selection is much more practical, with the future in mind.

Captain Ashish Bagai is the run-machine as ever, but watch out for the 19-yr old one-down batsman Ruvindu Gunasekera, who got himself an opportunity to play in Sri Lanka's domestic season last year - a better choice than playing in the Canadian domestic leagues. His style is extremely similar to our Junaid's, and that's nothing but coincidence... I doubt either of them know each other!

Chittagong, Feb 9 (bdnews24.com)—The national cricket team has reached Chittagong to play a warm up match ahead of the World Cup.

They arrived in the port city airport around 8:10pm on Wednesday, Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir, chairman of the Chittagong venue told bdnews24.com.

Bangladesh on Saturday will play Canada in their first practice match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium and on Pakistan on Feb 15 in Dhaka.

There will be a practice session on the following day around 2pm at the World Cup venue. The tigers earlier held a conditioning camp from Feb 1 to 4.

Canada will reach Chittagong on Thursday around 7pm.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan on Tuesday at a press meet said: "We know the playing conditions, our boys are fit and preparation is fine. Besides, we've improved a lot in the last 12-15 months."

About the possible teams to play the practice matches, he said, "Ahead of the World Cup, we'll do some experiment with the players."

Chittagong will host two matches of the first round, to begin on Feb 19, with England on Mar 11 and the Netherlands on Mar 14.

Can't agree more. This kind of 'loser' attitude exist only in the older generation of cricketers like Ashraful, you wouldn't hear things like that from the newer bunch. But, I wish him best of luck, hope he plays well in one of the matches.

Roni bhai mone hoi ektu beshi bole felchen.

Ash didn't say we cannot beat India. He said it will be tough to beat them this time. He mentioned the other 3 teams because these teams are a bit weaker against spin bowling. India is king against the spin. Look at Shakib's stats against them. Only Mash has good stats against them and he is out of the team.

^^ OK Murad bro.. I didn't see the last lines of the interview on NTV news - I guess that was another of journalism tricks. Apologies I take back what I said.

Regarding including him in the team, I personally do not want him against the India match - this is a very high pressure game - the opening match plus it has been over-hyped by the fans due to the win of 2007. I don't think he will be able to take this kind pressure.

Yes it doesn't have the "Live" icon beside the match in the Warm-up fixture on their World Cup section, and neither does the India-Australia match, which will have TV coverage. So I'm not sure what to take out of this...

WC Warm-ups in UAE

Canada vs Netherlands (http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/engine/match/499787.html)
Canada won by 4 wickets.

Canada vs Afghanistan (http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/engine/match/500000.html)
Afghanistan won by 5 wickets

Canada is a weak team. We should try to win by a big margin.

Ireland was also beaten by both Kenya and Zimbabwe. Scorecards (http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/content/series/473318.html?template=wcfixtures)

We have lost against weak teams as early as last year. So, complacency need to be avoided. That being said, I am expecting BD to win comfortably against them.

I hope they give Nafees a chance in the game against Canada.

Don't know anything about this Canadian side... any special players in their team? fast bowlers?

They have a hard hitting all rounder named Rizwan Cheema who I like quite a bit.

Their wicket-keeper/captain Asish Bagai is also a pretty decent middle order batsmen.

They have a batsmen named John Davidson who had made the fastest century in the World Cup (not sure if that record still holds).

And their pace attack is led by the tall Henry Osinde who actually bowls quite fast and can be effective in the right conditions.

Other than that, I don't know too many others on the team, it seems like they have gone for a younger team this time except for Davidson who is 40. We should win quite easily against them, but that's if we play well. If we don't, I bet Canada will put up a fight.

@Razi: Great Pictures!
@Tiger_Omar: sounds like one or two of their players could put up a fight.... I would like to see that as well... it would be good to see how our spinners perform when they are under attack... and also how our batters approach the game when they are setting up a target...
I do think we should bat aggressively... we need the same kind of aggression the sri lankan batting side had in 96...

A preview by me for the fan page, thought i should share with you guys too.. (please pardon any mistakes and provide feedback as this is my first attempt) :)

The first match for the World Cup is set to kick off at the land of beauty Chittagong at the completely renovated Zahur Ahmed Stadium. so who will start of the biggest cricketing event with more confidence? Will the Tigers continue their splendid form and good ranking or will Canada upset the local boys like they did in 2003?

Bangladesh

This is their chance. The team that had the tag of "underdog" for long and often delighted their fans with upset victories have come a long way since than. Their consistent winning habit against the major teams has awarded them the top 8th spot in the world. Bangladesh brings a much more consistent squad than World Cup 2007 with some world class talents like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. While all their games set to take place at their own backyard, their world best spin attack has all the aid it needs to make any opponent suffer. With spinners like Shakib, Razzaq, Shuvo, Naeem, Mahmudullah in the 15 squad, a strong spin and all round attack is expected. Their batting order lead by the ferocious Tamim Iqbal has consistency and has the resistence Bangladesh Team lacked in the early stages of their journey.

Canada

A nation where cricket is only practiced in certain places of the country and observed by a small population as a seasonal sport, Canada has shown steady improvement to this point. Back in 2003, they beat Bangladesh showed exactly what they can do. A squad that contains both experience and young talents, Canada certainly qualifies as a worthy opponent of any team. Captain Ashish Bagai along the other players looked very confident when the reached Bangladesh couple of days ago. However, this team will need to perform better than their recent performance against Afghanistan who clinched an easy victory winning by 5 wickets.

Squads:

Canada: Canada does not have a lot of option to think about it, their goal would be to try their best combination and try and achieve some consistency against the Tigers at this unknown condition of Bangladesh. They are more likely to enter with their very recent squad,

Ashish Bagai (Cpt), Rizwan Cheema (Vc), JM Davidson, Nr Kumar, R Gunasekera, As Hansra, Ze Shurkari, H Patel, K. Chauhan, Balaji Rao, HS Baidwan

Bangladesh team has it all, however, they might like to try some of the players that have not featured recently in national squad. This will be the golden chance for players like Mohammed Ashraful, Shahriar Nafees, Rubel Hossain, Nazmul Hossain to prove themselves and gain some confidence.

Shakib Al Hasan (Capt) Tamim Iqbal (Vc) Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Abdur Razzaq, Imrul Kayes, Shariar Nafees, Rubel Hossain, Nazmul Hossain, Mohammed Ashraful, Mahmudullah Riyad, Sorwardi Shuvo.

However, their is a possibility that the conservative coach Jamie Siddons might not change the line up at all in order to create stability in the tigers lineup!

Players to watch our for:

Mohammed Ashraful: While he have been out from the squad consistently due to his poor performance. His superb National and Premier League performance earned him a precious spot in the world cup. He will look to bring back his performance and challenge a large part of Bangladeshi population who did not appreciate his inclusion. While he is inconsistent, when Ashraful performs, the rest of the batting order can pretty much relax as he is enough to turn down any bowling attack in the world.

Jimmy Hansra: A relatively new player in the maple leafs lineup has performed brilliantly to clinch their victory against Netherlands earlier this month. He is effective both in the batting and bowling area so his all round performance is something to watch for. He is also a unique player in the respect that he is capable of batting any where along the batting order and can be equally effective.

Interesting Fact: Chittagong is set to be the first Bangladeshi ground where first game related to the World Cup will take place. The match is also set to be a day-night game something that has been unique and uncommon for the Chittagong ground.

Don't know anything about this Canadian side... any special players in their team? fast bowlers?

Posted this earlier in this thread:

Posted via BC Mobile Edition (Blackberry)

A few more tid-bits on some of the Canadians (mostly from personal experience while playing against these guys/video clips/keen interest in the team):

Ashish Bagai: The evergreen run-machine for Canada. DS reporter and our forum member Isam highlighted his credentials nicely in his piece here >> (http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/content/current/story/500275.html)

John Davison: Well-known by now for his hard-hitting... only player in the current squad to play domestic cricket overseas (in Australia). Nothing much to add to what we already know about him.

Hiral Patel: Teenage sensation in the local Canadian league, extremely flashy opening batsman, hits the ball hard, has shows signs of maturity in staying longer at the crease. Descent part-time spinner, great fielder

Nitish Kumar: 16-yr old prodigy! Plays in the V, technically solid. Known as "Sachin" of cricket in Canada. He almost won his club team a game against mine in a 3rd division league 3 years ago - he was only 13! Smacked 6' tall bowlers all around the ground...

Ruvindu Gunasekera: The "Sangakkara" of cricket in Canada. See above.

Rizwan Cheema: Took on Shoaib Akhter and Chaminda Vaas and took 'em to the cleaners! Hardest hitter of the ball in the country, but very poor technically. A good bowler should be able to get the better of him in no time. More hype than substance.

Umar Bhatti: Canada's only seamer of genuine international-caliber (Henry Osinde used to be the bowling spearhead, but he is old and at the end of his career). Bhatti will remind you of our Rasel, but a tad faster than Rasel. Can swing the ball both ways.

Parth Desai: Canada's answer to SLA! The team's leading spinner, shift bowler, and a true no. 11 batsman! He's often taunted as the tiny chubby boy who should be far more physically fit than what he maintains. However, he's just not skilled enough to trouble the international batsmen, yet. Was Nitish's teammate in that game against my club team that I mentioned earlier.

Tyson Gordon: The team's X-factor! Can hit the ball miles, and has played most of his cricket in the Caribbean. Only came to Canada last year and is the newcomer in the team.

Khurram Chohan, Jimmy Hansra: Utility players, can be decent on their days... Not much to make an impact at the international level.

Here's another article (http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/content/current/story/500432.html) on Canada's preparations for the WC.

Guys according to DS, SN and Naeem are likely to be out for the 1st match, and it seems that Roqibul will get the nod ahead of Ash but its not final yet. Since each team can use 12 players so Nazmul will likely play, Mushy also might be coming in at #4 which is a good news.

Bangladesh will hope everything falls right into place when they take on Canada in their first warm-up match in the lead-up to the ICC Cricket World Cup at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium today.

There has been a lot of talk about Bangladesh's ignominious defeat against the same opponents in the 2003 World Cup in South Africa but it seemed that the new-look Tigers are hardly bothered with what transpired eight years ago, choosing instead to look forward and focus on their own game plan.

“Past is past. We never thought and discussed about what happened in 2003. It's a totally new team, which has a new approach towards the game. We just need to play our normal game, nothing else, to get the expected result,” said a confident Bangladesh vice-captain Tamim Iqbal.

Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons said, prior to the day-night match yesterday, that their first focus would be definitely to win the game but besides they were also looking forward to seeing the team put through their paces before the kick-off of the tournament proper.

Siddons also assured that his team were not overconfident but were instead trying to be relaxed so that they could play their best cricket and make sure they do not crumble under pressure in front of the home crowd.

The Australian wanted to see his batsmen stick to the team rules and capitalise on the Powerplay properly while stressing the importance of the new ball bowlers to do well so that the team need not rely only on the two slow bowlers in captain Shakib Al Hasan and the seasoned Abdur Razzak.

The main interest was surrounding the team selection with everyone curious to know the fate of both Mohammad Ashraful and Shahriar Nafees. Both the stalwarts have apparently been snubbed from the team for the first match, especially considering the amount of time they were allotted to spend in the nets.

Siddons however stated that the only big question mark was who among Ashraful and Rokibul Hasan would get the nod. Ashraful is the only member of the squad to have played in the 2003 World Cup but late developments suggest that he will not be in the team for today. Sources also suggested that wicketkeeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim may be tried once more at number four. Left-handed batsman Shahriar Nafees and all-rounder Naeem Islam are likely to be left out of the team.

“Both teams are going to play more than eleven players, so it's not a legitimate match. We will probably play 12 players where Nazmul (Hossain) will probably play as an extra bowler. There is a big question mark about whether Ash (Mohammad Ashraful) or Rokibul Hasan will play as we are still talking about that,” informed Siddons.

“We are not thinking about Canada rather we are concerned about how we play the first practice match,” he said, adding that they have got a fair bit of knowledge about their opponents through fielding coach Julian Fountain and bowling coach Ian Pont who have both previously worked with the Canada team.

“We want to see that our process is right. Powerplay is important as well as the opening bowling spell as we need to do really well with the new ball rather then relying on Razzak and Shakib coming in. We have practised a lot with the last Powerplay and now we need to implement it in the matches. We need to put a decent score with all the batsmen sticking to the plan as well sticking to the team rules,” Siddons said.

Bangladesh might not be interested to recall the 2003 memory but their opponents wanted to take inspiration from that victory.

“Our morale is high and definitely we want to take inspiration from our victory in 2003 against Bangladesh. It's a young side as five players came from the Under-19 team but they have the quality to prove themselves on the big occasion. We want to start with a win and gain momentum and we are capable enough to do that,” said Canada's Sri Lankan coach Pubudu Bathiya Dassanayake, who has been working with the team for two years.

The former Sri Lankan player was excited with the fact that they have got the opportunity to play the practice match against Bangladesh at their own den as they believe it will help them to play good cricket in the tournament proper in India and Sri Lanka.

“Bangladesh have some good spinners in the side, so it will help us when we play the group matches in India and Sri Lanka,” he added.

If it's between Ashraful and Rokibul, , it's debatable as Rokibul has a better average but Ashraful on the other hand may fail 15-20 times and give you one match winning innings. Personally, I don't want any of these two batsmen in the side, prefer S.Nafees over both. But for now have to go with Ashraful, who knows his "one innings away" may be around the corner.

Well to be fair, cricket is generally a game for sissies, more so in a country like Canada where ice hockey is the national sport. For example, I lmao when I heard that Canada has a field hockey team. What a bunch of losers.

Actually, CBC has been covering the Canadian national team quite a bit lately. Not the TV channel, ofcourse, but their website has been carrying free live streaming consistently on www.cbc.ca/sports (http://www.cbc.ca/sports), just like Hockey Night in Canada is streamed there. I got to watch all of Canada's games in the recently held Caribbean T20 tournament.

They won't be able to do the same for the WC obviously due to broadcasting rights restrictions, but I'm actually impressed at how they're giving far more coverage of cricket now than ever before. There are regular articles and news reports on Canadian cricket on CBC, CityTV and the Toronto newspapers now. With more up-and-coming young sports journalists from the South Asian origin, the mainstream media may finally give cricket the national exposure it so badly needs. :)

As per Kaler kantha the playing XII will be like this. No SN, Nayem and Rokib. They are planning to use Mushfiq for #4 and Ash @ 6 for BPP. Finally a good decision by Siddons

So, Ash will fool Siddons once again!

If he gets one or two good scores in practice matches, he will have a sure place in the playing XI for rest of the WC. If he fails, we will see Rock at #6, slowing us further down in the pp. I don't like either of the scenarios!

Why can't Siddons try Naeem at #6?! or promote Riyad and try Naeem at #7?!

To be honest I don't think either Naeem, Rock, or Ash are great solutions. Their all struggling with their batting forms so there is gonna be doubt in our minds as to whether any of these players were the right decision for the #6. In my opinion, Ash should just not be in the XI. He's been awful with the bat the last 2 years and I don't know if he'll be good even at #6. Rock is a 4/5 batsman and needs time at the crease before making runs so #6 seems too low and then Naeem has been out of touch for awhile, struggling to score at all. When you look at all round capabilities then you see Naeem being the best since he bowls pretty regularly and fields well while Rock doesn't bowl and Ash barely bowls but honestly I could care less who bats at #6.

But, yeah, their medium pacers are showing the value of accurate bowling.

Ya their batting is weak but they have some good players in Waters, Ouma, and Tikolo and if they can get it going and get good support on the other end then they could chase down a small total. They still have work to do though since Chanders and Sarwan are at the crease and are very hard to get out.

I think bowling first is not a bad idea either as it will give our pacers to think how they are going to take on the Indians...
What makes you so sure that we won't lose the toss against India and won't be asked to bowl under light?!

If India win the toss, Dhoni will bat first IMO, so bowling first is good thinking IMHO :)

Again, what makes you so sure that will happen? If dew becomes a factor, he may choose to bowl first.

We should have been prepared for the worst, and this match had given a chance for that!

All is lost huh?

absolutely...a 10 wicket win against Canada will do nothing. and if we don't win by 10 wickets, thats equal to a loss.

the only consolation is that scoring 350 against Canada would be meaningless...

at least we'll get to bat full 50 overs against Pakistan win or lose the toss.

Bowling first in a practice match against Canada?!

What happens if Canada dont post more than 100?

I guess, Bangladesh may prefer to bowl first in all day-night WC matches due possibility of wet conditions or dew. So this may be a practice for that scenario.

why would you wanna bat first? we are playing a low ranked team. object of the game is to wrap it up quickly NOT get practice...you practice in nets not here.

Bangladesh have won the toss and decided to field first!
They should have chosen to bat first, play full 50 overs so that as many batsmen could have had batting practice. As far as our bowling practice is concerned, choose to bat or field first doesn't make a big difference.

Shafiul to Patel, OUT, Shafiul hits the pitch with full pace, 150kph and slightly swings away from Patel hitting the edge. Junaid takes a beautiful catch at slip.
