Police detained 70 suspected trouble-makers ahead of Bangladesh and England's World Cup Group B match on Friday at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

"They were detained at a community club at the Kajir Dewri area of the port city as they were making plans to create some problems on match day," a Chittagong Metropolitan Police officer told Reuters late on Thursday.

"It is a usual protective measure taken by police ahead of big events, be it sports, political or religious events," he said.

Unruly fans reacted angrily and booed Bangladeshi players in Dhaka after the co-hosts were skittled for 58 runs before losing by nine wickets to the West Indies in Dhaka on March 4.

A bus carrying the West Indies team was hit by stones after the disgruntled fans pelted it, mistaking them for Bangladesh players.

Following the incident, the government tightened security further and deployed armoured personnel carriers to follow players' buses and keep bystanders away from the road side where they would be travelling.
