IPL 2011 starts today. LIke Last Year i think we should have a Single match thread for all the league stage Games. No need for separate match threads for each games. So lets have all our match-time Chit-Chats Here.

this year 10 teams are gonna participate with the inclusion of Kochi and Pune. Teams have been rearranged as only maximum 4 players were retained and then players were re auctioned.

so u may not see ur favorite players in ur favorite team anymore. perhaps ur favorite players have been shifted some where else.

with addition of two teams the format has also change a bit. first each team will play each once and then they will play only 5 teams twice. the teams one will face the second time has been decided by lottery. so after each team will play 14 games and total 70 games the leaugue stage will end and the Qulifiers/Eliminator Round for Final will start.

Qualifier ONE: Top two from league will play and winner moves to Finals. Loser moves to Qualifier Two.

Eliminator: No 3 and No4 from leaugue plays and winner moves two Qualifier two

Qualifier TWO: Loose of Qualifier 1 plays Winner of Eliminator and Winner Goes to Final

anyway todays game is Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders.

Big picture

If India hadn't done well in the World Cup, would it have led to viewer fatigue ahead of the IPL? And since they won, will it translate to an enthusiastic fan base, and even creation of new fans for the game? This IPL will answer that question. There is another question that has been hovering around since the creation of IPL. Have the teams succeeded in creating loyal fan bases? This is the fourth edition and one should ideally see the early signs of loyalty but many teams, barring Chennai Super Kings, have changed their personnel so much that it will be interesting to see how the fans respond. Is fans' parochial affection to the region/city bigger than their love for the players?

For what it's worth, this IPL starts off with a lovely battle within a battle, an ad writer's dream. MS Dhoni, the man who led India to the World cup win, v Gautam Gambhir, the man who played a big hand in that final. It's not as big as the Dhoni v Tendulkar contest, but it's a mouth-watering prospect nevertheless. Chennai have showcased a winning ethos while Kolkata have provided pathos. From seeking glory in the first season and searching for redemption in the second, Kolkata were fighting to avoid humiliation in the last edition. Will this season offer the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel?

Chennai have ensured they didn't lose too many personnel, a move that will have gladdened their fans and their marketing team, and they still are one of the stronger sides in the tournament. In the past, they relied a lot on the spinners and their seam attack largely depended on Doug Bollinger. This year, they have added Nuwan Kulasekara and Tim Southee and that seam attack looks far more potent. The batting will miss the services of Michael Hussey until the end of Australia's tour of Bangladesh and Aniruddha Srikkanth might open in his absence, along open with M Vijay. The middle order is pretty established with the likes of Suresh Raina, S Badrinath, MS Dhoni and Albie Morkel.

Kolkata Knight Riders have been looking for fresh start ever since the nightmarish first season and this season will start on the same premise. Can Gambhir and the new faces turn things around? Ryan ten Doeschate, Jacques Kallis and Eoin Morgan will add great value to a middle order that has often proved brittle in the past. Add to that the menacing presence of Yusuf Pathan, and you are looking at a pretty formidable batting line-up.

Team talk

Kolkata might be forced to play all their available overseas players tomorrow. The likes of Brett Lee, Brad Haddin and Shakib Al Hasan will feature only at the end of Australia's tour of Bangladesh. For Manoj Tiwary, who has decisively slipped under the national radar, this season offers another chance to prove a point or two. Shreevats Goswami, the wicket-keeper batsman who struggled to get a game with Royal Challengers, might get an opportunity to prove his worth.

Anirudha might get a chance to open for Chennai in Hussey's absence. It will be interesting to see if they pair Suraj Randiv with R Ashwin. They are more likely to turn to Shadab Jakati, who has done a good job in the past as a back-up spinner. There is also the interesting sub-plot of S Badrinath. If he performs well, as he has done in the past, the city populace will once again sigh at the alleged "discrimination" against him in the national scene.

In the spotlight

Yusuf Pathan's reputation was built in the IPL and he carried on that confidence on to play a couple of furious match-winning knocks for India in ODIs. He was replaced by Suresh Raina near the end of the World Cup and will be itching to showcase his brutal power in this year's IPL. He has the shots, he has the heart - unlike some, he doesn't retreat further into crease every ball in anticipation of the bouncer - and he has the ambition.

Eoin Morgan is that rare commodity in England cricket: an excellent limited-overs batsman. He can unfurl the craziest of the innovative shots and is difficult to contain. He could potentially be the engine of Kolkata's middle order.

In Hussey's absence, M Vijay will have to take up the burden of scoring against the new ball. His career path has been fascinating: he shrugged off the tag of a Test batsman to play some screaming knocks in the shortest form of the game but the criticism against him is that he either goes too slow or plays too many shots. The critics have demanded maturity in his shot selection and his progress will be closely monitored.

Prime numbers

# With 520 runs, Suresh Raina was the third highest run getter in the last year's IPL. Kallis, who played for Bangalore, was the second highest scorer with 572, behind Sachin Tendulkar.

# Last year, Kolkata featured twice in the top four occasions of a team conceding too many extras. They gave away 20 extras against Chennai and 18 against Punjab.

# With 13 wickets apiece, Shadab Jakati and R Ashwin were the top wicket-takers for Chennai last year. Kallis also took 13 wickets while Ashok Dinda, playing for Kolkata, picked up nine wickets.

The chatter

"The batting line-up is as good as last year. IPL is not about less pressure. Batting slots are decided according to situation. When all are shuffled up and down the order, it's according to the situation. If we have to change the batting order, everyone has to be comfortable about doing it.."
MS Dhoni is confident about the might and flexibility of his batting.

shak's spin bowling will keep him ahead of other overseas competetors.

ideally KKR should go with LEE, Shakib, Kallis/Haddin, Morgan/Doeschate

they have good indian batting with Gambhir, Tiwary and pathan. but their indian bowlers are not that good. So Lee and Shakib will be key for them

With a dropped catch and a poor shot under the circumstances, it looks like Morgan is the weak link of the foreigners so Shakib could easily replace him.

KKR played with only two foreigners. Seriously what they were thinking? Those domestic players are better than international players?
Other teams are cashing on their international players(both Indian and foreigners). Atleast 70%+ MoM awards receive by them where domestic players win it occasionally. Besides international players are better fielders.

Can Warne inspire Rajasthan again? (http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2011/content/current/story/510082.html)

Match facts

Saturday, April 9
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)

Big picture

The controversial build-up to this year's IPL has, for a large part, involved Rajasthan Royals, whose participation in the tournament had been in question. Their reinstatement came at a price - a significantly reduced auction purse - and much like in their first year, a lot depends, prescient tweets apart, on the leadership of Shane Warne. His presence in the inaugural edition was inspiring, spurring on a team of lesser-knowns to a title triumph, and his tactics drew admiration.

His Deccan Chargers counterpart is an accomplished leader himself. Kumar Sangakkara stepped down from the helm of Sri Lanka's one-day side, following their defeat in the World Cup final - one of many resignations in Sri Lanka's setup - but takes charge of a revamped team after the franchise released all its players into the auction pool.

Not unlike the other franchises, the captains will draw much of the focus in the initial stages of the tournament, as the teams settle on their combinations. In the case of Rajasthan and Deccan, one captain is leading a comfortable life in international retirement but returning to the IPL to revive his team's fortunes after two disappointing seasons, while the embattled other seeks to mould an unfamiliar team into a successful one. Both are widely respected, strategically shrewd and expert sledgers, offering great potential for mind games in a format that is often an exhibition of machismo.

Team talk

Rajasthan lost Paul Collingwood in the lead-up to the tournament and Jacob Oram was brought in. They will be without the all-round services of Shane Watson, who is in Bangladesh as Michael Clarke's deputy for a three-match one-day series. The pace of Shaun Tait might be preferred over Oram, while Ross Taylor will be a key player in the middle order. Ajinkya Rahane was a prolific scorer in the domestic season, and is among the Indian players to watch out for. Not to forget the four players who were a vital part of Rajasthan's maiden Ranji title - Aakash Chopra, Ashok Menaria, and seamers Pankaj Singh and Deepak Chahar, who grabbed 12 wickets on his first-class debut back in October 2010.

There's no Kevin Pietersen or Cameron White for Deccan, one due to injury, the other due to international commitments. Rusty Theron impressed last season for Kings XI Punjab, Dale Steyn heads the pace attack, Michael Lumb is an attacking opening option while JP Duminy will lead the middle order. The bumper signing for Deccan was South Australia allrounder Daniel Christian, and he also remains an attractive draw in the top order. They also have left-arm spinner Chris Lynn, though it'll be surprising if he makes the XI on Saturday.

In the spotlight

Ishant Sharma: Being left out of India's World Cup XV would have been a setback for Ishant, with Munaf Patel being preferred over him, but now's the time to bounce back. He was the pace spearhead for Kolkata Knight Riders last year, but will have to play a slightly subordinate role to Steyn in the Deccan attack. While Steyn can bank on some swing, Ishant will hit the deck hard and be determined to get back in to the reckoning for national selection.

Rahul Dravid: For assistance in leadership and mentoring the younger players in the team, Warne need not look too far. Apart from his quality batting, Dravid's richness in experience and his attitude makes him an example for the younger players, and his association with his once nemesis Warne will be among the key features of Rajasthan's game.

Prime numbers

* Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra, both part of Deccan, were the two highest wicket-takers in last year's IPL. Ojha picked up 21 wickets in 16 games, Mishra finished with 17 in 14.

* Harmeet Singh, Shane Warne, Michael Lumb and Dale Steyn have one thing in common - they had two ducks against their name in last year's IPL, the second-highest for any batsman.

The chatter

"As a franchise and as a team, I hope the Hyderabadi fans will embrace us and we will do our best for you on the field and continue to do so right throughout the IPL season as we try and win IPL 4."
Kumar Sangakkara, ever the diplomat, as Hyderabad hosts its first IPL game in two seasons.

Kochi v Bangalore, IPL 2011, Kochi

Kochi debuts against new-look Bangalore (http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2011/content/current/story/510046.html)

Match facts

Saturday, April 9
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big picture

Surprise, surprise! After being in the news for all the wrong reasons for the best part of a year, Kochi is finally going to play a game of cricket. It all started off with a seemingly harmless tweet from Lalit Modi. From there, the Kochi controversy morphed into an unstoppable avalanche that knocked Shashi Tharoor out of the Indian cabinet of ministers, and Modi off his pedestal as the IPL commissioner. If the franchise's off-field giant-slaying abilities are anything to go by, their on-field opponents better watch out.

The Kochi consortium might be tangled in an unintelligible ownership mess, much like a batsman who can't read Muttiah Muralitharan's doosra, but the team is filled with players known to take ownership of the sides they play for. Captain Mahela Jayawardene and Murali will still be smarting from Sri Lanka's loss in the World Cup final. Brad Hodge will have a point to prove to the selectors of the Australian team. VVS Laxman will have a point to prove to himself, that he can flourish in Twenty20 with the finesse he brings to the purest form of the game. And then, there is Sreesanth who, when he sets his mind to it, can produce deliveries that force batsmen of Jacques Kallis' calibre into performing back flips at the crease.

Kochi's IPL debut will be against a Bangalore outfit that is virtually unrecognisable from last year, barring Virat Kohli. Among the new names is Tillakaratne Dilshan, who gave Kohli the most vociferous of send-offs after dismissing him in the World Cup final. The team also brings Daniel Vettori and AB de Villiers together, just over a week after they confronted each other in a charged-up World Cup quarter-final. Dale Steyn has been lost in the auction, but Zaheer Khan and Dirk Nannes have come in. Bangalore have picked a strong bunch of foreign players, but seem a trifle short on quality local batsmen. After two very good seasons that ended in heartbreak, will Bangalore finally find a path to IPL glory?

Team talk

Barring fitness concerns, Bangalore's overseas picks are automatic selections. Captain Vettori will surely play the in-form Dilshan and de Villiers, while Nannes should relish sharing the new ball with Zaheer. There is a question mark over who Dilshan's opening partner will be, and the toss-up could be between Mayank Agarwal and Jonathan Vandiar, though the latter's inclusion would mean having to leave one of the other foreign players on the bench. Abhimanyu Mithun and Mohammad Kaif are likely to get a game.

Brendon McCullum and Jayawardene should form an interesting contrast at the top for Kochi. Murali, if fit, should walk into the XI, while Thisara Perera could get a game in the lower-middle order, giving the side a distinct Sri Lankan flavour. RP Singh and Ramesh Powar are expected to complete the bowling line-up.

In the spotlight

Saurabh Tiwary and Cheteshwar Pujara represent two sides of the same coin. Tiwary stands back in the crease and thumps the ball with fierce arms, looking for midwicket with the assiduity of a left-handed MS Dhoni. Pujara, on the other hand, invokes Rahul Dravid in his temperament and technique, keeping his drives down, and finishing with his leading elbow high and showing the full face of the bat. Both met with success in the previous IPL, for different teams, and earned call-ups to the senior team, in different formats. This year, they could form crucial additions to the middle order of the top-heavy Bangalore line-up.

Ravindra Jadeja has it all to do, once again. He was branded a 'superstar' by Shane Warne at the end of IPL 2008, and went on to earn a permanent spot in the Indian one-day line-up. Things have fallen apart for him since, starting with being banned for the 2010 IPL season after trying to negotiate a contract by himself. He has fallen out of the radar of the India selectors now, and a solid performance here will go a long way in re-establishing his oft-questioned credentials as an allrounder.

Prime numbers

# Between them, Dilshan and de Villiers mustered only 155 runs in 13 innings in IPL 2010 for Delhi. Will the change in team result in a change in fortunes?

# Jayawardene was one of only five centurions in IPL 2010, and finished the season as the sixth-highest run-getter, with 439 runs.

# Murali was Chennai Super Kings' highest wicket-taker last year, with 15 wickets. Zaheer Khan, playing for Mumbai, also finished with 15 scalps.

The chatter

"I can compare the Bangalore team to the South African international team. I've played a lot of cricket and I know that the teams that do well are always the teams that have a good team spirit. The previous team couldn't win the trophy, so hopefully we can change something in that line"
AB de Villiers indicates there is a good vibe in the Bangalore side.

^Manoj Tiwary actualy lost the last match. It is not about blaming, his stats looks good and he did extremely well to hit two sixes and bring the chase within even Roqibul's reach; but not taking singles in the next two deliveries and gifting away the wicket says a lot about his quality. There is no good thing that he can do and Tendo-Morgan-Pathan can not do.
