You are aware that Bangla is Indo-European and has roots in Sanskrit? Sanskrit -> Prakrit -> Bangla. Bengali has ~45% unmodified Sanskrit words.

Actually Nafi was close. I first encountered the word formally in the biography of mathematician Andre Weil (known for the Weil conjectures) who talked about devotees having darshan of Gandhi during his stay in India.

People who don't know the common bangla word "দর্শন" and cliam it as a Hindu/Sanksrit have no right to support the Banglasdesh cricket team. They may question the inclusion of Alok and any other hindu cricketer in the team.

You many not know the Bengali language, may BC members doesn't, that's understandable. But when you say it is a Hindu/Sankskrit word, it idicates you know the laguage and spend most of your time to watch hidi movies/serial and hate the hindus.

I assume you use the water জল to mean water as it is a Bangla word where পানি is sanskrit.

Thanks Isnaad. Now if you all allow me your valuable time, I will share the reason behind the usage of the word before thread derails further into Hindu-Muslim schism.

When I was a kid, say about 5 or 6 years old, I used to live in the university area of Mymensingh. Every so often, my mom would take me to Sohor to do her shopping while I was treated the most delectable cone icecream (this was in the era of soft served one). Upon return, may it be due to the tabooed nature of the subject (I was still being raised a muslim then), I'd be extremely curious to see what new idol or murti they'd put in a small pujaghor. The rickshaw would just ride by, and as you know, how bright are the nature of the idols of Hindu religion, and there would be 'new' one -so to speak- but whatever may be the reason, I would extremely curious to get a 'glimpse' of it. Mind you I was a kid so I had no 'control' over my surrounding and I'd just go with the flow. So the rickshaw would just keep going and the experience -akin to a jaeger shot- would last milliseconds. That would further increase my thirst.

Hence, I used the word in that sense...as a synonym for 'glimpse'. So there you go; now you know the origin behind it's inspiration. [Closest to these 'shots' are like reverse_swing's post who gives a glimpse ever so often, but when he does it's all bright. :) ]

I am surprised by the article! Trouth of the matter is that MM has become a dibly dobly medium pacer from a fearsome strike bowler. The wickets he got were not earned but gifted. There was not a peach of a ball that bamboozled the batsman. Please look at the WC game where he single-handedly destroyed India. He is now a pale shaddow of himself. However, it is not for trying. He has the heart of a lion but his legs are the ones that are going south. I am saddened to watch his decline. My advice to him would be to exit gracefully and not dilute the great memories that has given us.

The article was not meant to be an overall assessment of his abilities. Yes, I am not denying that he has lot of work cut out for him. But, the article was more of a paean or an homage to his comeback delivery that got Haddin's wicket.

And as for the highlighted fact, well it depends on what your calling of a stunner or 'peach of a ball' is. Ymmv but I personally felt that he showed great presence of mind to curb the run rate down by bowling tight at first when his partner was leaking runs and to get the wicket.

This is the amount of sacrifice he has to do to play cricket. Remember how much hype Brett Lee created when he came back from one knee reconstruction? This bloke underwent four[or maybe three]. Still he gives his 110% and plays cricket, risking his future.

I honestly feel if it weren't for those nasty injuries, Mashrafe would have been amongst the best pacers in the world. But, unfortunately it's not the case. Hoping mashrafe has a successful operation, comes back stronger than ever.

Again we are so obsessed with the superficial aspect of our religion that we forget to practice and follow the spiritual aspect of our religion.

Like it or not my friend we Bangladeshi or Bengalis (whatever political affiliation floats your boat) speak in Bengali and Bengali is our heritage which again you like it or not comes from a "Hindu" or "Sanskrit" origin and if that makes you feel uncomfortable then I suggest you move to a middle eastern country or Pakistan and start speaking in Arabic or Urdu. I think most of us here will not miss you one bit!!

Another info to all on the situation Mashrafee had to face, his wife and the new born kid both were in coma/unconscious for almost 5 days... Just imagine the kind mental stressed situation he has been through and after that he played for the Aussie series.... I feel very bad after came to know this fact because I've written in other thread that he is doing drama after read about his comments that he is not going to play the series against the Aussies....
