The royal wedding holds special appeal to the inhabitants of Great Britain, because for some reason (that I, being a non British, shall never fathom) the royalty is still revered there.

But to be frank to me it's just a guy marrying a moderately hot chick-nothing to be excited about. Although I wish the couple my best.

Let's not generalize... I've met plenty of Britons who are like that (mostly chicks) and plenty of others who absolutely loathe all this royal nonsense and want to get as far away from this damn wedding as possible. And of course, there's also the type that will make a drinking game out of watching it on TV.

I wish they would just eff off to some damn island and get hitched there.

Oh wait...

I didn't intend to generalize, but since I've never been in Britain nor met any Britons, all I know of Britons are cultural stereotypes filtered through BBC. So may be generalization was inevitable after all.

Prince William, Kate to visit Canada :)

CBC News - link (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/02/16/royal-visit-canada-prince-william-kate.html)
Prince William and Kate Middleton will travel to Canada in June for a nine-day visit that will include stops in Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Ontario.

The royal couple will arrive on June 30 and depart July 8, visiting Ottawa on July 1 to celebrate Canada Day.

Further details of the visit — the couple's first overseas trip as newlyweds — are not expected for at least a month, according to James Whitaker, the royal correspondent with London's Daily Mail.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper hailed the visit as "a testament to our country's very close relationship with the Royal Family."

"Canada looks forward to welcoming the young couple this summer and providing them with all that our country has to offer, including, of course, the special hospitality and warmth reserved for members of the Royal Family," Harper said in a statement.

Heritage Minister James Moore said his department would pay for the visit using money set aside for "any kind of international visit."

Moore said "the precise cost" of the trip had yet to be determined, but assured taxpayers it will not cost them "anything in addition to what is already budgeted."

When asked what the amount of the budget, he said: "It depends every year."

"They are not nearly as expensive as some people may think."

Taxpayers money.

Taxpayers money.

The security and cleanup I guess. I read that the actual wedding expenses are being borne privately. I've read estimates of about $30M for government expenses. On the other hand about 1M tourists are expected to visit - the money they put into the economy might well put the exchequer in the black.

We need a tamasha of this nature in Bangladesh to draw tourists in.

I think you've got something special there... number of people in the world who were born in 1981 and got married / are getting married in 2011 must be like less than 5 or something... even counting my cousin in BD and a friend in US... I'm lucky to encounter at least 3 people from this club.

I have nothing against the Royal family or the Royal wedding. Think of it a part of the culture, traditions and heritage this country has, and like it or not most people who aren't from Britain love it and it brings in a lot of tourism. I wish William and Kate a happy married life and hope they use their position and influence to do good.

It may be costing major corporations money but I have no problem with that, or the fact I have an 11-day leave by just taking two days off work.

Anti-royalists banned from London royal wedding protests

Anti-Monarchy protesters have been told by police that disrupting the royal wedding will not be tolerated.

Scotland Yard will deploy 5,000 officers backed by the military on Friday and promised that criminal activity will be met with a ‘robust’ response.

Marksmen from the Met’s specialist CO19 firearms unit are understood to be on a ‘shoot to kill’ footing and special forces are expected to infiltrate the crowds.

Senior officers insist there is no ‘specific intelligence’ about threats.

Sixty people arrested for causing trouble at recent demonstrations have been banned from London on Friday. Met police Cdr Christine Jones said: ‘Any criminals attempting to disrupt it, be that in the guise of a protest or otherwise, will be met by a robust, decisive, flexible and proportionate policing response.’

The radical group Muslims Against Crusades, which is calling for protests to ‘overthrow the tyranny of Queen Elizabeth II’, has been banned from demonstrating outside Westminster Abbey on Friday morning.

Officers had offered to meet the group to discuss holding a demonstration elsewhere but they refused to meet.

A counter demonstration by the ultra-nationalist English Defence League is feared and another protest group, reportedly with Middle Eastern links, has asked for permission to rally against the wedding.

All groups applying to protest are likely to be refused permission unless they agree to postpone action until later in the day.

Police will also seize any banners that the public ‘would find offensive’ according to Assistant Commissioner Lynne Owens – even if they would be acceptable at other times.

She appealed to the public saying: ‘We really need you to be our eyes and our ears.

‘If you see anybody in the crowd acting suspiciously please bring it to the attention of our officers.’

Anti-monarchy pressure group Republic said moves by the police to seize protest banners were ‘an attack on free speech’.

A spokesman said: ‘This country does not belong to the monarchy and people have every right to protest against it. We do not find it acceptable our police force is going to silence peaceful protesters.’
