The Bangladesh government is poised to offer Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus a respectable position in the bank he founded after a series of global uproars.

Yunus announced his resignation from Grameen Bank as managing director on Thursday. On Friday, finance minister AMA Muhith told BBC radio on Friday that the government may offer Yunus the position of emeritus member of the bank in recognition of his contribution to the institution. However, Muhith did not elaborate on the roles and responsibility of an emeritus member.

The minister said Yunus is highly regarded by the country and the government wants to ensure a respectable departure for him.

Last month, the United States and France exerted diplomatic pressure on Bangladesh to negotiate an honorable exit for Yunus. Robert O. Blake, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, threatened that the Yunus issue could cause a dent in the U.S.-Bangladesh relationship.

The resignation of the 70-year-old microfinance pioneer was announced two and a half months after he was forcibly removed by the central bank, which charged that Yunus had no legal authority to act as the micro-lender's managing director. Bank officials alleged that Grameen's board had not obtained the central bank's sanction to re-appoint him beyond the bank's official retirement age.

The micro-credit guru has said he believes that the 8 million beneficiaries of the bank, mostly rural poor women, will not be subjected to any difficulty and no interruption in bank’s operation is likely.

Thanks BK bhai for sharing.

It's really unfortunate to see that people are spending time at threads like Yo Mama, and no one bothers to pay respect to Prof. Muhammad Yunus.
