First 'Dark Knight Rises' Photo Shows Bane Isn't Messin' Around

Bring out the gimp. Warner Bros./JoBlo

To make a modern superhero blockbuster, it's not just enough that the movie is good: The campaign to get people excited has to be executed just as perfectly. Why anyone would need to get more excited about "The Dark Knight Rises" (which just started shooting) is beyond The Projector, but we do love the first salvo from the Warner Bros.' publicity people that happened today.

This morning, the movie's official site (http://www.thedarkknightrises.com/) was revealed (via JoBlo (http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/what-the-hell-is-going-on-at-the-dark-knight-rises-web-site)) ... if you call an all-black homepage with some weird chanting an official site. But then some crafty online sleuths discovered a coded message within the chanting, which suggested a Twitter hashtag, #TheFireRises. Tweeting that caused an image to show itself on the site, and thanks to more enterprising web folks, we now know it's a photo of Tom Hardy decked out as Bane, the sequel's principal villain.

Anyone who's seen Hardy in the disturbing "Bronson" knows that he's got a gift for scaring the hell out of you just with a look, and that's what this image does. In the comic books, Bane was equal parts brawn and brain (http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Bane) -- sort of like Hannibal Lecter with the physique of a bodybuilder. And he's also the man who famously turned Batman into a quadriplegic by breaking his back (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8a/Bane_breaks_Batman.png) in a '90s issue. It's doubtful that will happen in "The Dark Knight Rises," but looking at this photo, you wouldn't put it past the dude.

But beyond just the reveal of Bane, this is some world-class viral marketing that might even top how the studio unveiled the Joker (http://www.slashfilm.com/the-joker-revealed/) for the last film. What we particularly like about the Bane reveal is how it's straight out of a high-tech thriller: The hero discovers a weird sound file, realizes it has a hidden message, and then cracks the code and saves the day. Fans wouldn't have gone to all that trouble if they weren't excited about "The Dark Knight Rises." But, seriously, who isn't excited about "The Dark Knight Rises"?

It certainly IS being hyped. Would love to see it live up to it. Apparently they are shooting in India too.

Earlier this week we learned that The Dark Knight Rises would be filming in India (http://batman-news.com/2011/04/26/the-dark-knight-rises-to-film-in-india/). Today, The India Times has many more details to add. According to their report, Christopher Nolan and his main crew will arrive in India on May 1st. Christian Bale is expected to arrive on the 4th or 5th, and filming will take place for two days on May 6th and 7th. They will be shooting at Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort, which is pictured above. No other actors were mentioned… perhaps only Christian Bale is needed for the two days in India?http://batman-news.com/2011/04/28/the-dark-knight-rises-begins-filming-at-mehrangar-fort-on-may-6th/

Fictional character biography

Bane was born in the fictional Caribbean Republic of Santa Prisca, in a prison called Peña Dura ("Hard Rock"). His father Edmund Dorrance had been a revolutionary and had escaped Santa Prisca's court system. The corrupt government however decreed that his young son would serve out the man's life sentence, and thus Bane's childhood and early adult life are spent in the amoral penitentiary environment.[3][4] Though imprisoned, his natural abilities allow him to develop extraordinary skills within the prison's walls. He reads as many books as he can get his hands on, builds up his body in the prison's gym, and learns to fight in the merciless school of prison life. Despite his circumstances, he finds teachers of various sorts during his incarceration, ranging from hardened convicts to an elderly Jesuit priest, under whose tutelage he apparently receives a classical education. Bane murders this priest upon his return to Santa Prisca years later. However, he commits his first murder at the age of eight, stabbing a criminal who wanted to use him to gain information about the prison.[4] During his years in prison, Bane carries a teddy bear he calls Osito (Spanish for "little bear"), whom he considers his only friend.[5] It is revealed that Osito has a hole in his back to hold a knife that Bane uses against anyone who bullies him.[3][4]Powers and abilities

Bane is highly intelligent; in Bane of the Demon, Ra's al Ghul says that Bane "has a mind equal to the greatest he has known."[7] In prison, he taught himself various scientific disciplines equal to the level of understanding of leading experts in those fields.[4] He knows six active languages and at least two additional arcane and dead ones. Among these are Spanish, English, Urdu, Persian, and Latin.[7] The Bane of the Demon storyline reveals that he has a photographic memory. Within one year, he is able to deduce Batman's secret identity.[7]

Although extremely dangerous at all times, Bane is perfectly sane and in control of his mind and actions—a trait that separates him from many of Batman's enemies. While he generally acts as a villain, Bane has worked alongside Batman at times and developed a great respect for the Dark Knight. He is also one of the few villains of Batman to have learned his true identity. He is also resistant to telepathy as he can think of something so quickly and so intensely that even the Martian Manhunter cannot read what is in his mind.[citation needed]

He is also highly devious and a superb strategist and tactician.[4] In prison, Bane also invented his own form of calisthenics, meditation, and a unique fighting style.[7] Usage of Venom enhances his physical abilities, including his strength, and healing process to superhuman levels.[5][32][33] Although Bane had sworn off using Venom in Vengeance of Bane II in 1995, and his character is actually written as having kept that promise to himself, it is still not uncommon for artists to draw Bane as still wearing the tube leading from his old wrist device to the back of his head. This is likely due to the illustrators only being familiar with that early version of Bane's visual appearance. Writer Gail Simone explained these lapses in the continuity of Bane's appearance in an issue of Secret Six, in which Deadshot remarked that Bane merely kept his old Venom equipment with him out of habit, even though he states that he would sooner die before using any of it againMore in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bane_%28comics%29)

Campaigning strong...

Three The Dark Knight Rises Viral Videos Point To An Arkham Asylum Breakout

The Dark Knight remains the gold standard for online viral marketing for a movie, a series of hints and games dropped over the course of months that had seemingly the entire Internet at a fever pitch by the time the movie opened in summer of 2008. And even though the third Christopher Nolan Batman film The Dark Knight Rises has only begun production, the very sly viral campaign has already begun. We got our first look (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/First-Dark-Knight-Rises-Image-Shows-Tom-Hardy-As-Bane-24811.html) at Tom Hardy as Bane only after some devoted Bat-fans decoded some hints at the film's official site (http://www.thedarkknightrises.com/). Now the same YouTube user, The Fire Rises, who uploaded the Bane photo has put three videos online that seem to indicate there's trouble at Gotham's famed Arkham Asylum. Check out the three below.

Bronson and now Bane (I think he was in Inception too) - way to start typecasting yourself Tom Hardy. Have to say I enjoyed Bronson though - he was a chilling character. Bane's character profile reads like the wikipedia profile of Sir Mohammad Ashraful PhD (and there, we have the obligatory Ash reference)

Totally disagree. Dark Knight was the best comic adaptation to date. Nothing beats Heath Ledger's acting, macabre overtone, and the background music. Consider the following dialgoues --

#Alfred – “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

#Harvey ‘Two Face’ Dent – “Have you ever had to talk to the person you love most? To tell them it’s going to be alright, when you know that it’s not?”

#The Joker – “Madness is like gravity, all it needs is a little… push.”

#Harvey ‘Two Face’ Dent – “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

#Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just… do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon’s got plans. You know, they’re schemers. Schemers trying to control their little worlds. I’m not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So, when I say… Ah, come here.

When I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I’m telling the truth. It’s the schemers that put you where you are. You were a schemer, you had plans, and look where that got you. I just did what I do best. I took your little plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hmmm? You know… You know what I’ve noticed? Nobody panics when things go “according to plan.” Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it’s all “part of the plan.” But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!

Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It’s fair!

Both sets of my former in-laws are Colorado natives from Littleton, too close to places like Columbine and Aurora in the Denver area. The places unwittingly nurture and glorify an alcohol, meth and handgun fueled cowboy culture of high school jocks and bullies, and aloof and materialistic parents. Naturally many humiliated children grow up to be anti-social monsters. You're out of luck unless you come from old money or a highly educated family. The idea of counseling is way too dope-smoking-sissy-California in those parts so issues seldom get addressed.

I remember hitting the slopes with my significant others and their families and witnessing those jocks humiliating the sensitive types every chance they got. Both Elizabeth and Clara told me horror stories from their Jr. High and High School years, and never wanted to raise children there.

Issues wider than just Colorado, bro. America in general is raised on a gun culture. Maybe machismo is ingrained in our genetic code, I dunno...but from "cowboys and Indians" to GI Joe to historic jingoism, the gun fetish has gone on too long. Per capita, more folks are killed in gun violence here than in ANY OTHER nation on earth and thats astounding when you have countries like Afghanistan and the continent of Africa still on the map!

There are idiots on my friend's facebook wall right now who are blind enough to repeat "we need to execute this animal" ad nauseum as their answer to this plague.

I hear you bro but Colorado and a few other adjoining states like Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas and Idaho are especially alcohol and gun driven.

The Colorado culture is actual cowboy culture because that's what most homesteaders ended up doing before the mining rush. Elizabeth's family owns a 15,000 acre horse and cattle ranch on the border with Wyoming that's been in her family for more than a century. The Blakeleys, her paternal family, were an Anglo-American family from Massachusetts who moved to Colorado, married local Cheyenne and Ute nobility and built the ranch. Elizabeth, her brother Mike, and later as the "Moslem" husband of their Moslem convert daughter (I had little or nothing to do with the conversion BTW) were subjected to cowboy folklore every time we had dinner with them. They grew up with those great stories that make you wanna go out there, mount a wild mustang and shoot living things as the "simple" and best solution to all kinds of problems ranging from hunger to justice to annoyance.

Now, they aren't really racist because their history homesteading involved close and almost equal social interaction with Native and African Americans, they're incredibly proud of their native bloodline and are involved in reservation charities, but pretty much anything outside the western cowboy narrative is viewed with suspicion. So much so that ranch hands working at the ranch -- mostly from Puebla, Mexico and the local res -- go all John Wayne in their attitude and posturing within a few years. Difficulty in learning to snowboard finally convinced some of my buddies there that not all Californians are soft. BTW, going to any California school used to make you a hippie in that state. Maybe the dominance of the 49ers and the Raiders over the Broncos added fuel to that fire back then, I dunno.

Anyway, so strong is the culture that Elizabeth's dad, a chemical engineer who worked for Dow, suddenly gave up his great job to become a rancher. That cost his marriage to Linda, my ex MiL who came from a typical Swedish American family from Minnesota, and thought she was marrying her college sweetheart with great prospects in the corporate world.

Clara comes from a Korean American family of college professors who never had to deal with that culture the way Clara had to in public schools, especially as an Asian braniac. There's almost instinctive distrust of the intellectual types in that culture for obvious reasons. She lives in between NYC and San Francisco now and is trying to get her parents, now almost retired, to move away.

I watched the Dark Knight Rises last night, a bit later than everyone else, but I seem to have had a completely different experience than others here. Let me say at the outset that I'm a big Batman fan and really enjoyed the Dark Knight, so I went in with pretty high expectations. When I left the movie theatre almost three hours later, I was benumbed and disappointed. It's early days so I don't want to litter this thread with spoilers but I'll just say that for those considering buying tickets, 'the darkness' of the movie isn't the issue: the problem is the movie isn't either a brooding contemplation of the role of 'superheroes' in a cruel, brutally realistic world, who are confronted by ethical and moral dilemmas (think Dark Knight, Watchmen) OR a high-octane, techno-gadget filled action movie ala Transformers. It comes off as being a bit half-baked.

To carry the convo from fb. I also hated the Inceptionesque epic goal of movie making. Nolan: your job should be to entertain us, the weight of which was carried exclusively by Ledger's Joker last time.

This time as some mentioned, Nolan tried to balance the good vs evil. equilibrium by downplaying Bane and giving Batman the tragic hero halo. Also, the thing is I want to go to the movies to be entertained in short burst of time to keep it with me, not sit there for three hours, drained, holding bathroom.

Some points I agree:

Bane was all brawn and explosion. No subtle, acting based character.
Bane's voice was barely intelligible at times. It was nice but many times came as mumbling.
There is no plot that we would be 'blown away' not already given glimpse in trailer which basically divulged the whole movie.
I agree it's more of an artsy masterpiece getting applause after it finished but it was just overhyped with guerrilla advertising living up to expectations.

Favorite part? Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in orange jump suit. :p (I hope we cool... :P )

Will I watch it again? Possibly. But comic-con nerds will go gaga over it more. :p

The Dark Knight Rises... what a let down.

I don't see why people are saying it was 'dark'. Have you seen the Dark Knight? Fab and I watched the first two movies (BB the day before and TDK the day of watching TDKR) prior to going so the differences in how the movies were made were really stark. I think the first half was pretty tight (bar some Bruce Wayne internal struggle drag) and increased the suspense appropriately. But then after.. maybe the football stadium scene.. it went to $hite, and the film itself became as chaotic and non-sensical as they tried to make Gotham become. Also not enough Bane, would have liked to have seen more of the brains that we know he has. Merely making him sound intelligent is not enough. And the ending. Oh no you didn't Christopher Nolan. But yes won't give much else away. It's not a terrible movie, just such an inferior follow-up to The Dark Knight.

Btw.. I enjoyed Wolverine when I watched it. It was enjoyable without being pretentious. I watched Iron Man one week after it and did not enjoy it. I also thought X-Men 1st class was pretty lame. I'm sick of campy Hollywood one-liners!

So this trilogy no matter what the shortcomings, is a million times better.

Nolan and Bale made Batman interesting for me. This being the final Nolan effort, I don't see myself getting hyped about the "franchise".

no question this latest trilogy of batman movies has been the best. i always did watch the batman movies, but these last 3 are the ones that really made the franchise interesting, all 3 are great movies with no silly stuff, a few of the earlier movies were much to comical and over the top comic like.

Tim Burton one was decent if my memory serves me right. Batman and Robin was the worst. I remember the director apologizing to the fans after the movie bombed at the box office.

^I'm a serious movie buff and Tim Burton's one of my favorite filmmakers bar none. His quirky, humorous and offbeat perspective alongside that remarkably creative sense of production design is right for many stories, but not for something as dark and intense as the modern Batman narrative IMHO. Naturally Nolan and Bale were the perfect fit.

My only problem with Bale was...as the movies progressed, Batman and that growl when he spoke got progressively worse.

Gowza
July 26, 2012, 03:10 AM
yeah batman and robin definitely the worst, the other 3 "batman", "batman returns" and "batman forever" weren't quite as bad but nowhere near as good as the 3 from nolan and bale imo.

With Bale, it really could be both

Speaking of Bale(and this is straying from the topic at hand) - he was freaking brilliant in Empire of the Sun(1987).

12 years old when he acted in that, and unlike so many child actors, he really has gone from strength to strength.

Bale can act, that's for sure. He has phenomenal range and can actually become the character he's playing. That sort of genius, coupled with biochemical imbalance brought upon by more traditional sources, make him the off-camera ***hole he's reported to be.

I think I like that he is a complete knob off screen. Bit tired of the old cliches, so and so is an absolute pleasure on and off screen and has never misbehaved in their life.

Same reason I liked Russell Crowe, that man would get into a fight with his own shadow if he was left alone in a room
