View Full Version : Playing without Manjural Rana?!

Manjural Islam Rana has been the most successful batsman of the Zimb tour thus far. According to today's Daily Star, Manjural Rana will only play if Shahriar Hossain is not fully fit by the morning.

Bad idea, IMHO.

I was surprised to see it this morning also. What gives? They must be trying to fit Khaled Mahmud in the 11.

So, we put in 2 duds Khaled Mahmud & Alok, and leave an in-form Rana out. This is just great:mad:. How am I gonna get ahead at all in Fantasy now?

Rana played very well ..but there is just no roam..how it happened thatz why always wanted to have specialist bowlers of batsmen. Like atleast two specialist pacers in the team..cuz of pace friendly track we have to go with four medium pacers!!!! i don know what to say..

Thats what happen when we need to accomodate somebody special! Bangladesh will have a 4-prong pace attack! Bravo!

Dudes....

I have no doubt in my mind about the skill of Rana as a baller. But I am not certain how much he will be efficient to score quickly in a typical one-day mode. I know he was on strike when our team was in a shacky position ( thx to our top orders !!!)...but If we look at his statistics, I too will be a little bit confused about his ability to score quickly.

First test :

Manjural Islam Rana not out 35 152 108 4 0

Manjural Islam Rana c Gripper b Price 31 147 108 2 0

Second test:

Manjural Islam Rana c Taibu b Price 39 138 87 3 0

I know it's unfair to judge anyone by his test attitude...but in the circumstance like this what could the selector do.

And about the inclusion of Sujon....I have nothing to say. Hope he won't die abnormally in his normal life.

lol@billah. u are looking like u r more worried about your fantasy team than the original team. i picked rana too for my fantasy team.

looking at the test series and rana's form, i'd happily trade with anyone from this final 11 with rana. ANYONE.

Wasn't he trying to save the innings rather than scoring runs? He should not be given chance in playing ODIs, he earned it.

I couldn't figure it out why sujon was pick ahead of other players. Did he do anything special while he wasn't playing in the test matches?

so its a pace friendly wkt and our response is to include this bum shujon as the xtra seamer/batsman!!!

I am so mad. Frankly I want them to lose today. If we somehow win, his inclusion will be applauded by the morons back home for contributing to our victory. This is really frustrating.

Rana & Mushfiq showed class in the ODIs against England. Coming in late, scoring slog runs, that is Rana. And this is ridiculous.

Hey, I'll take a win anyday, even with Sujon on the team. I disagree with Rana's exclusion, but I do think that Sujon has been vilified by Bangladeshi fans desperate to vent their frustration about the unending losing streak. No one thinks Sujon is a great player, but his performance has not been sufficiently behind those of other players to warrant the type of strong antipathy that seems to accompany the mere mention of his name. That said, I would take a team that replaced Sujon with Rana. But I would also take a team that replaced some of the other players with Rana.

Whatever the team, of course, I'd take a win hands down.

agreeing with deshibhai, i also say win is win. doesn't matter what.

This is one of my favorite quote from whatmore: With bat on hand rana does whatever he is told to do. forgive my wording. and in last two series he is the only consistant player. i wonder how strong push whatmore has to get in order to leave rana out of squad. where does this push coming from?

So far, the only reason given by a member is that Rana was taking his time in the test matches and he probably knows as well as we do that there is a huge difference between ODI and Tests.

When the top order failed (as they might in ODIs) Rana was there to take full control of the situation and showed calm and character (which might see us bat the full 50 overs). As others pointed out, Rana has proved himself in the ODIs as well.

The whole decision to drop someone like Rana to give Shujon a complementary pass is beyond my comprehension. I guess we will never figure out what goes on in our selector's little heads.

Perhaps the wicket is not conducive to spin bowling of Rana's kind. Shujon with his bowling perhaps gives the team an extra dimension. I am just taking a shot in the dark here. Since the team is all the way in Zimbabwe, I am ruling out much "outside" interference. If shujon is played I am guessing it is Whatmore's and the team management's decision.

One non-cricketing reason, I can think of is may be Whatmore wants to give Shujon this chance (assuming he is bound to fail) and get over with it once and for all.

My earlier comment wishing a loss for us because of sujons inclusion, was purely out of frustration. Offcourse I want us to win. All of us do with or without sujon. I thought we had closed the chapter on sujon when he was dropped as the captain. Sadly, that is not the case. From a pure cricketing sense, replacing rana with sujon is propestourous, an outrage. I hope he can justify his inclusion.

We have five options to use 20 overs to be bowled by non specialsit bowler and those are Mushfique/Mahmud/Alok/Ashraful and Rajin. Hopefully at least two of them will bowl better. And specially Shujon and Mushfique if the pitch favours FM bowlers.
THUS SHUJON SHOULD USE FULLY his Last and the real LAST chance. Otherwise BYE BYE FOREVER FROM BD CRICKET. And if so it's a humilation to shujon's contribution in the team management in the post WC era. And thus shujon should not agree to p-lay in the ODI. That might be a blunder mistake for him. On the otherhand It may be a very very helpful to comeback for him should he raise his bat and ball again for BD.

In one way, the decision is useful...we have always put new players into international matches without fully testing their quality and eventually doomed their careers...
In this case, Rana has proven his abilities in the Test level. However, excluding him from the one day squad will make him realize that he has to fight harder to get a chance and that might become an incentive for him to strive to improve himself, which is going to be awesome for the BD team...

but to be fair to him one thing he definitely IS is that he is a FIGHTER. May be this will be his day!!! I have absolutely no problem with that if 1) we win this match as a result and 2) if this performance from him is no flash in the pan!

This is another big blunder.

I don't know why we are sending Alok out to open when we have a natural one-day opener in our side. We should send Ash out to open, play Alok at 5 and Rana in place of Sujon. That would make this team so much better!

Nasif
March 10, 2004, 01:36 AM
Can't imagine any reason for keeping rana out. Dav knows best what he is doing, but really sujon? WTH is wrong with our think tank, if there is any.

shaheen
March 10, 2004, 02:09 AM
In my opinion, who ever open the game, doesn't matter unless they play resposible shots. What I think is that our players just need to be very much selective in playing shots. They should avoid fishing the balls those outside the off stumps(which is our main problems for top orders). If our top orders can control their norms(get out at an regular interval before 15 overs ) then we will be able to achieve good performances soon!

Good luck BD Cricket Team
