World Twenty20 spots up for grabs - Pybus

Mohammad Isam
July 10, 2012

Following Raqibul Hasan (http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/56093.html)'s 61-ball 140 for Bangladesh A in the last of the three Twenty20 practise games, Bangladesh coach Richard Pybus (http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/18647.html) has said there are spots to be won in the national squad for September's World Twenty20.

The match in Mirpur, at a ground with short boundaries, was an ordeal for bowlers. Bangladesh A chased a 244-run target (http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/571786.html) with five balls to spare, Raqibul smashing eleven sixes and fourteen boundaries in an out-of-character batting performance. This knock would have helped Raqibul - who last played for Bangladesh in 2011 - regain some lost ground, but he should not get too excited; Pybus's comments about "open spots" could also have alluded to the bowling unit or even one of the batting spots in the middle-order, as both have shown a lack of Twenty20 skills.

It's great that the team that is going to Europe is not necessarily the final team - this will keep the players on their toes and not let them get complacent.

I am liking the what Pybus is doing and what he is saying this early in the game.

Exactly as it should be...this isn't some all conquering side with a ton of established players, we are a bad side, and even worse T20 side. Other than a select group of players, everyone else should be playing for their spots.

Richard was really happy how "A" team chased those runs.

ofcourse its up for grabs. We dont really have any batsman who are real good T20 player except shakib himself

Jahirul's spot is especially vulnerable. Nasir too I am not completely convinced about. Depends how they do in Europe. And it goes without saying that Rubel should replace Abul when he's fit. But other than that I think the rest of the squad is good to go.

^ I am confident about Nasir. There is no one in the bench yet to replace him. I am not confident about Jahurul, Ash, and Zia and these are the spots that are up for grabs.

I have a feeling the suggestion of including Saqlain Mushtaq as a spin coach came from him

+ Shafiul's spot is there to grab IMHO!

Shafiul is the weaklink in this attack. He just doesn't pick new ball wkts.

 yes, he is doing the right things and talking the right way....

A truthful but clueless guy would have taken a few names to destroy the effects he is achieving this way..

I think Shafiul is safe for now. Can't think of a guy who we can replace Shafiul with unfortunaty.

I think Pybus will keep an eye on Junaed, Zohirul, Babu, Zia. Ash also needs to perform. Two Eid innings will not help him now. But RP seems pleased with his Zim performance.

Mash, Nazmul and RBX could be our pace attack - if Shafiul doesn't fix his line and length, he won't be around much longer IMHO.

Agreed, but Rubel is injured and that's why I have said Shafiul is safe for few more days :)

shafiul is a very average bowler in my eyes. This guy bowls some good bowls but never fails to give width or bowl a full ball every over.

1. Tamim Iqbal
2. ?
3. ?
4. Nasir Hossain
5. Shakib Al Hasan
6. Mushfiqur Rahim
7. Mahmudullah
8. Mashrafe Mortaza
9. ?
10. ?
11. ?

To me the bowling attack are uncertainties. Shafiul, Nazmul, Abul Hasan, Razzak, Elias Sunny. From these 5 players which of them will fill 3 positions? Nazmul to me should definitely play but the selectors think otherwise. But i think Ashraful will be Tamim's batting partner. But i have no clue about the no. 3 slot. The option there are Siddique or Jahurul.

Also the selectors might change the order around so that Ziaur Rahman can fit into the team but im not too sure about that.

i reckon sunny will have a place, if he doesn't then he should. as far as pacers go we may as well try nazmul, he can't be any worse than what the others have done so far and he is one of our best in ODIs so he definitely should have a go. ash prob will be the 2nd opener, mominul could have been a candidate for #3 but he's not getting a look in on the tours so i have no idea who will be #3, i guess as said junaid or jahurul or maybe even zia.

I think the batting order is more or less set. The fight will be at the following positions:

1. Tamim
2. Ash
3. Shakib
4. Nasir
5. Mushy
6. Mahmudullah
7. ?
8. Mash
9. Razzak
10. ?
11. ?

If the above are set, I don't see a fight there...

7. Zia - the only position which may be up for grabs, if he doesn't perform in IRE. But then not performing in IRE can unsettle anyone, except 3/4.

10/11: this will remain for Shafi/ Nazmul/Rubel/or a spinner if they want to play two pacers.

These areas will never settle down permanently, untill we get a legendary pacer...

I will go where angels fear to tread. Is Mash the right bowler for T20s?

We just don't have anyone who is better than him when it comes to Pace bowling department

Mash is no more the first choice pacer... And yes it's a genuine doubt with his inability to check runs when needed or you can say, any avg batsman can hit him at will to achieve the target RR. That's the reason he avoids bowling at the death ... so he isn't an ideal T20 bowler, but do we have a choice? The only choice is to play an additional spinner...and chose two between Rubel/Shafi/Nazu ... And Zia as a part timer slow medium...

Not too sure if Shakib will bat at no. 3. Jahurul has being doing pretty well in the recent matches in T20s so i would try him out at no. 3.

1. Tamim Iqbal
2. Mohammad Ashraful
3. Jahurul Islam
4. Mahmudullah
5. Shakib Al Hasan
6. Mushfiqur Rahim
7. Nasir Hossain
8. Ziaur Rahman
9. Mashrafe Mortaza
10. Elias Sunny
11. Nazmul Hossain

I think a deep batting lineup isnt a bad idea for T20s. Pitches in Sri Lanka are slow so having 3 pacers is good enough. Mahmudullah should definitely be bowling full 4 overs, he is so under used and he is a very capable bowler. So the bowlers we have are Shakib, Mahmudullah, Ziaur, Mashrafe, Elias and Nazmul with Nasir and Ashraful as part timers.

I set the batting lineup in terms of situations. We get Tamim and Ashraful to start off to a flier. One of them gets out in the 4th over from the hitting during the powerplay. Jahurul comes in and continues that momentum up until the 8th over when someone gets out. This is the crucial part of the game. Mahmudullah comes in and works the ball around for ones and twos making sure wickets dont go down, he will rotate strike and play sensibly. Mahmudullah will bat during the middle overs of the game and then after he starts hitting boundaries he can get out. After he gets out it will be the 12th over.

From the 12th over onwards we have the luxury of Shakib, Mushfiq, Nasir and Ziaur to finish the game in style (even Mash can do a bit off hitting at the end overs). I dont want Mahmudullah to come at the end to 'finish off the game' because he isnt suited to that role. I would rather he come during the middle overs so thats why i would put Mahmudullah at no. 4.

Nazmul? Rubel if he were not injured. Mash is still better than talpatar shipai.

Mash is still the one of the best with the new ball but when it comes to the death, he is WORSE than new kid Abul :(
