This may turn out to be the tiniest NHL thread ever as the last ditch CBA negotiations are to resume this week. The kufa started from the FA hype.

There is positive movement today. Lockout may end soon and season may start Nov.2. Of course, I am hoping here. This can't go on anymore.

2 Work Stoppages in 8 years

It's been real NHL

So we're looking at yet another truncated season as our best case scenario. They ought to have another cup for bogus situations like these.

At least our top prospects, every single one of them with the real potential to be better than Suter and Parise, are getting some quality time with the Griffins and showing that they're simply too good for the AHL even now.

I'm very excited about Gustav Nyquist, possibly a Zetterberg 2.0 with better skating ability, scored a couple of goals and then clinched the shootout in the 4-3 win against Toronto. Tatar, also a bright prospect, scored the other one. These guys know that they need to step up as Kenny's failures at the market has created serious opportunities for them to make a name for themselves.

Lidstrom, Fedorov, Kozlov, Konstantinov, Draper, Datsyuk, Zetterberg and many others did the same not so long ago. We gotta rely on what works and what works in Detroit is our formidable scouting and farm system.

This year's uncertain schedule keeps getting truncated but the hope lingers on. They should come up with a different cup for seasons like these. CBA Cup would be a great name IMO.

They need to cut the crap and just cancel the season. Two months of BS negotiations with zero progress.

3 straight work stoppages is embarrassing. Gary the *** clown needs to be replaced as soon a new deal is reached.

Gary Bettman needs to step down after this is over. Fehr brothers need to go as well. They are not good for the game. And, that Boston owner is one of the major culprit. Last meeting was a disaster after three days of hope. I was surprised they didn't come to an agreement last week. But, I think the end is in sight. They agree more than disagree now. Only major issue is the length of the CBA. I think we will see a 48 game season starting in Jan. At this point, I don't care. I just want to see games. I have kept my three ( cancelled ) tkts as souvenir vs Jets, Rangers and Isles.

^Welcome back bro. Here's to hoping that we'll be welcoming NHL hockey back sometime soon. You're right on the money about guys who ought to be shown the door for the good of the game.

Cancelled games through January 14th no. We are looking at like a 42 game season if the lockdown ends soon. Otherwise we can say bye to the season. Pretty damn pathetic from both sides.

You guys think this is a death sentence to teams like Florida and Phoenix ? Viewership will surely be down in America across the board.

Here's the only upside: a severely truncated season will make things unbercompetitive because each game will matter more in light of playoff qualification.

Lengthy negotiation session delivers tentative CBA framework

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association reached agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement early Sunday morning.

After a marathon 16-plus hour negotiating session at the Sofitel Hotel that began Saturday afternoon, the sides announced an agreement in principle shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday.

"We still have more work to do, but it is good to be at this point," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.

The League did not announce the start date of the season or the number of games each team will play. Various reports suggest teams will play either 50-game schedules or 48-game schedules, depending on the date on which the season starts. Those details will be announced soon, Commissioner Bettman said.

About effing time indeed ! 48 game schedule means playoff intensity from the get go. Teams can't afford to go on a prolonged slump. Only bummer is no inter conf games. For example : No Pens vs Wings or Blackhawks or Canucks etc. Its gonna be a dog fight in Atlantic div. We have to face Flyers, Rangers, Isles, Devils- five games each, and three games each vs all other East teams. So, teams will cancel each other out in our division. Much easier path to playoffs for teams in 'not so strong' div in East. Same goes true for West conf. Anyway, I am just glad its over and can't wait to see some action starting next weekend.

Looks like Leafs have fired Burke as their GM.

Sohel : I heard a joke that you would love. Hearing that the league went to a lockout so Leafs don't get to play in the Winter Classic : (

48 games in 99 days! Tough schedule ahead for us this truncated season. Everyone except the BJs is a contender in our division, so it would be tough during this rebuilding period. But I remain optimistic. Guys in our pipeline have the opportunity to step up and make a place for themselves during the course of what promises to be a highly competitive, pressure-packed season. Looking forward to playing Minny this year. Playing them at the Joe on the 25th. Can't wait to see the reception Parise and Suter get. No word on who gets the "C" this season but it'll be between Hank and Pavel for sure with Hank getting the final nod on account of his superior communications skills. I hope the under performance stops as the direct result.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/3461/zetterbergwings9408col.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/441/zetterbergwings9408col.jpg/)

As expected, Hank has been named Captain of the Detroit Red Wings during this rebuilding period. The 210th pick overall in the 1999 draft has pretty big shoes to fill (Champion HoFers Steve Yzerman and 89th pick overall Nicklas Lidstrom) in a tragically declining city with nothing other than its sports with hockey being the most popular sport, and music going for it. That's pressure and I hope Hank is up to the task. His hockey has been in decline since 2008 and we're hoping that the "C" will turn things around. Pavel and Junior will help him out as Alternate Captains. Talk about all European leadership on the ice!

Now it's Henrik Zetterberg's turn to wear the "C."

Zetterberg became the third player since 1986 to be named captain of the Detroit Red Wings when he was introduced Tuesday prior to an intrasquad scrimmage. He's the 36th captain in franchise history.

"Henrik Zetterberg leads by example ... he understands the responsibility of being the captain of the Detroit Red Wings," general manager Ken Holland said in making the announcement.

The 32-year-old replaces fellow Swede Nicklas Lidstrom, who retired after the 2011-12 season. Lidstrom got the "C" in 2006 after Steve Yzerman retired following an NHL-record two-decade run as captain.

Zetterberg was an easy choice because of the respect he's earned from his teammates and the coaching staff.

"He's not afraid to communicate," coach Mike Babcock said. "He doesn't mind getting mad at me one bit. He's just not shy about what he thinks. We've had a relationship like that for a long time.

"We have a good guy who's a real good human being, who loves hockey, who has a mind for the game, he's really good to his teammates and he's demanding of himself and he doesn't mind speaking his mind. To me, that's pretty good leadership.

"We got a pretty good guy there.''

Zetterberg's appointment was one of the worst-kept secrets in hockey -- he was one of the Red Wings' alternate captains under Lidstrom and was widely expected to get the "C" following Lidstrom's retirement last summer. Like Lidstrom and Yzerman before him, he's played his whole career in Detroit and seems destined to finish there.

Babcock said the three share some common traits.

"I guess the things that jump to mind for me is fierce, fierce competitors," he said. "Great, great people and guys who put the team first and can speak for the team and treat their teammates right. So those are three things that I would say right off the top of my head."

In nine seasons with the Red Wings, Zetterberg has 252 goals and 372 assists for 624 points, and he's had at least 68 points in each of the past seven seasons. His 50 game-winning goals are fourth on the team's all-time list, trailing Yzerman (94), Brendan Shanahan (79) and Sergei Fedorov (63). Zetterberg also has 51 goals and 102 points in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and he won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2008, when the Red Wings won their most recent championship.

Pavel Datsyuk and Niklas Kronwall will serve as alternate captains.

Zetterberg said he's played for some excellent leaders who've helped him grow and mature during his time with the Red Wings -- and that includes more than Yzerman and Lidstrom.

"Just playing with Nick for my whole career here, just to see how he prepares himself, how he handled himself on and off the ice, and just lead by example and that’s what he did," Zetterberg said. "I played with many good leaders since I got here and not just Stevie and Nick. There was [Kris] Draper, [Chris] Chelios -- there are so many guys that I played with that you learn from. So you try to take bits and pieces from all the guys that you play with, and they really formed the player who I am now."

Nonis clearing up the dead weight in the roster. Clears up spots for Kadri and Frattin to start now :D

Got JVR, signed McClemment, and took out the trash to play the kids. Seems like a good offseason.

Any truth to the rumor that Luongo maybe headed your way? Huge salary BTW.

Pens are $9mil under the cap ! I can't believe it. We were always captied for the last five-six years. I bet there will be a big trade during the deadline this year. We have tons of great young puck moving D in the system, but no forwards. I do see us moving some of those assets for a first-second line winger during the trade deadline. In the pipeline for D are first rounders : Simon Depress, Joe Morrow, Derrick Pouliot ( 8th overall pick from Staal trade )Olli Matta. The others are : Scott Harrington, Brian Doumolin ( came via trade from Car for Staal ), Robert Bortuzzo, Brian Strait - all four are NHL ready. Good chance we trade with Ducks for one of their prized forwards. I am hoping so..

Leafs PWN
January 17, 2013, 04:27 PM
Not at the moment. Nonis has said he is only willing to move good young players (Gardiner, Rielly, etc) for other good young players. Only veterans worth anything on our roster are MacArthur/Bozak/Liles. Along with that, Gillis' asking price is ridiculous right now (he wants star player in return ). That contract indeed is atrocious in terms of lenght. With this new CBA, the Leafs can face upto a 2M cap penalty for 3 years if he decides to retire between ages 37-40. Add in the fact that the Canucks are already tight against the cap (the 70 M cap), and will need to clear 6 M (cap drops to 64.8 next year) + sign Edler next offseason, he doesn't have that much value IMO.

He will only get traded here if Gillis accepts something like Bozak/Mac + Colborne + 3rd/2nd IMHO.

I was actually thinking about potential destinations for Perry at the TDD if he doesn't re-sign with Anahiem by then. Pittsburgh seems to be the best fit to me, in terms of needs, available assets, and cap space.

I hope he's a Mama's boy, and wants to come back home to sign the big contract :P

Beamer

Perry will be incredible if we can land him. But, I doubt it. He is a former Hart winner and an incredible goal scorer. I think Ducks will resign him. Its Bobby Ryan that we have interest in. I know Pens like Clark MacArthur a lot. Perry will cost a pretty penny, and we have Malkin and Letang to resign next year. That's a big $$ amount. At the TDD, I so expect us to go after Gonchar and try to move some of those D assets. Talking about assets, Brian Strait just got claimed by Isles. So, we lost one guy.

Lost 0-6 season opener to the Blues who outclassed us by a mile! THE worst opening game for us in decades. It was the first time we were shutout on opening night since the 1958-59 season when we lost 0-2 to the Habs.

Personally, I haven't seen us look like a perpetually mediocre team (like Toronto) since the late 80s!

We were off. Our timing overall was way off. Our trademark tape to tape, one touch passes were pretty much non-existent as were quality one-timers. We we were a step behind not only defensively, but also on the forecheck and the backcheck. This is the season for everyone to step up and be better, starting with Hank and the Mule to the fringe players doing well with the Griffins. Not only did they fail to show an early glimpse of that, but actually underperformed and really stunk it up out there. Not worthy of being called the Red Wings with this kind of pitiful hockey

BTW, VERY impressed by Vladimir Tarasenko. This guy has what it takes to become a superstar in the league. Wish we had him instead of the Mule, a grossly overpaid underachiever yet to have that much anticipated "breakout season". In his 30s now, he never will. He is the Mohammad Ashraful of NHL in some ways.

The goaltending in this division is ridiculous for everyone except the Leafs.

Rask, Price, Miller, Anderson............Reimer/Scrivens

It sucks having to play these 4 so many times a year. Ryan Miller completely stole the game tonight. We had a million shots, and he completely stood on his head. The 2 posts didn't help either.

JVR has looked pretty bad so far. Invisible out there right now, and can't finish much of what Kadri is producting. Kadri has been awesome - great vision, good hustle, good physical play, and adequate on the defensive end. 2 goals in 2 games for him. Should have had a couple assists if Miller wasn't being a wall.

Only a matter time till we try him between Kessel and Lupul.

Yes, he is very impressive. Saw the highlights of his goal the other night. Pens tried to move up and get him, but no luck. St. Louis is a great young team. People need to watch out. I remember us playing them last year in a game and they made life miserable for us. They are a hard team. Very physical. They come after you. Backes is not nice to play against. Great goaltending they have and play air tight defense. Def a team on rise and I think they will go a long way for years to come.

Leafs PWN - I don't know why but I have never been impressed with Ryan Miller. Great numbers every year. Maybe its because every time we play Buffalo he gets pulled ! Lol...not every time, but I have seen it many times. Its one of those things. We have his number and he never plays well against us. Guy who we can not beat is Carey Price. He has our number and I think the world of him.

Pens have done well in first two games. Tough way to start the season. Back to back games in Philly and NYR. Both Wins. Our team speed looks excellent. It all comes down to Fleury and Defense that imploded last year. Goal scoring is never the problem. Keep them out is. Lets see. Home opener tomorrow vs Leafs. Bank on Kessel scoring. He always scores against us.

We did a little better in our second game and the first two periods of the third during the home opener, but none of it has been vintage Red Wings hockey. Blowing a 2-0 lead to the BJs before they blew their 3-2 third period lead and then losing in the shoot-out isn't anything to be proud of. Watching our mediocre play on the ice tells you why. The BJs are without Nash FGS!!! Then losing the home opener to Dallas

Both Kenny and Bruce are under a great deal of pressure as they should be. They've always looked great because prospects had ample time to develop in the Griffins before seeing sustained NHL action. Veteran stars and timely acquisitions did the trick. Not this year. This year they have to motivate everyone to step from underperforming veterans to newbies to step up and prove their management creds under more adverse circumstances. We've resorted to playing crappy players like Cory Emmerton on a regular basis FGS. True we're dealing with injuries, adding to Kenny's offseason failures and vets retiring, but WTF???

Probably gonna be a goalfest in the Pens-Leafs game like most cases. Randy installed a good defensive system that seems to work so far, but I'm not too confident about its effectiveness against the Pens. Doubt any system is good enough for Crosby/Malkin unless you have Chara, Weber, and Suter on your team. We're probably gonna have to score 4 to win this one.

Question for Beamer bhai - who do you think is better, Malkin or Crosby? From a pure talent point of view, I think Malkin is the better one. When he's on he makes NHLers look like beer leaguers. Crosby does that too, but not at the same extent as Malkin.

If you asked me that two years ago, I would say, Crosby - hands down. Right now, its not even close. Malkin is the man. Sid is off his game. Two years of absence will do it. His timing is off. His mind is there, but hands not quite there. Hopefully its sooner than later. I am not sure he will ever get his goal scoring touch back, but I will not bet against that guy. Right now, he is back checking like a demon, and for the first time he has asked to be on the PK unit. He is winning draws, and the sight of him on PK is scaring people, though he hasn't done much to scare them off !

Goalfest it is tonight ! I told you Leafs ( Kessel in particular ) always give us trouble. I won't be surprised one bit if they spoil our home opener.

What Malkin has done to James Neal is pure legendary. I swear the way he is setting him up is almost Mario esque..

Saw a lot Dalllas-Detroit last night. Good thing about lockout? You are getting a lot of free games on TV. They want to make it up to their fans. Whitney and Jagr, two forty somethings were making magic all night long with tic tac passing. Also, from what I saw, it looked like Datsyuk had a very very off night. Very unlike him. That Swiss kid got some game though ( Brunner ? ). I know Pens were talking to his agent last summer. He chose Detroit. You guys looked slow on D bro..

Anyone see what Chicago is doing? On fire. They are such a talented team.

Well that was fun to watch :D Kulemin had his best game in 2 years tonight. Looked like his 30 goal self again. JVR used his opportunities well, and Kesseled that one bad turnover. Overall, the Leafs did a good job of limiting the scoring chances, and Reimer made some good saves. Although that first goal was inexcusable.

Pittsburgh looked sluggish aside from a couple bursts of pressure. Gino especially looked bad with multiple turnovers.

Hope this is a sign of things to come for my Leafs. Just some hope and nothing more

You should be very optimistic. I said about Leafs last year that they have great speed and good young wingers. It was evident again last night. I was not surprised because Leafs always play us well here. Defense looked good and Randy C knows about defense, being a former Norris winner himself ( ding ding? what team ?? ha ha ) .

Crappy play from Pens. Too much east west stuff. Got picked up and boom the other way. Second line was bad. Geno, Neal and Mr. clueless Tangradi were repeat offenders. The one goal lead in first was against the run of play and eight mins of penalty ( 5 on 3 included ) in a row in second crushed every thing. Geno sat on bench cold in that span, and came off the bench and turned it over right away. Some of the boarding calls were really confusing, but no way that was the reason we lost. We never got up for the game, as often is the case vs Leafs and Isles. Hopefully, this was just one bad game.

Only positive was Crosby looking a bit better than the previous two games. On to 'Peg on Friday night..

Chicago's on a hot streak and we did reasonably well against them after a dismal first period. Bounced back and competed but didn't take quality shots at Crawford. Not enough to beat him anyway. Better play the way we did from the second period and practice taking more quality shots on goal. Not at the body, but at the top corners. Gotta roof it guys.

Both offenses are firing in all cylinders right. Marleau has 2 goals in every single game except one.

They are indeed playing well. Throw in Tampa and Boston in East too. However, its too early in season. All teams will go through mini slumps or major hot streaks at some point. I would rather go in playing hot towards the end before playoffs.

Yep, that would be the best time to get hot. I remeber Leafs teams with Sundin used to get hot at the end, and win some ridiculous amount of games in the last 25 to only miss the playoffs by a 1 or 2 points

That one year (05?) where the Devils won in shootout in the last game to kick the Leafs out of the 8th will be etched in my memory forver. Worst feeling ever

Montreal has been the most surprising to me. They played like utter crap agaisnt us, and then go on to a 3-0 record. You can tell how much difference a healthy Markov makes to that team. Having a top three like Markov/Subban/Gorges with Price in net pretty awesome. If Galchenyuk can keep producing, they might not do so bad this year.

A question for Sohel bhai - do you see Nyquist outproducing Franzen in the next 2-3 years? I was wondering whether to do a deal for Franzen around Nyquist in one of my keeper leagues.

Also, if you guys are up for it, maybe we can do an ESPN fantasy league for BC hockey enthusiasts. Something like 8 F - 4D - 2G shouldn't take too long to draft.

@LP: Franzen has been a bitter disappointment for us. We expected him to evolve into a 40-50 goal scorer at some point but thanks to his laziness, that never happened. Everybody in Detroit wants him traded. Sadly, he's likely to get another chance with us this season because of our weakened state. Nyquist is skilled and works harder but is still a couple of years away from the second line under normal circumstances. But our current situation is anything but normal and so he has the opportunity to step up. Damien Brunner is likely to adjust to the league and become a major contributor offensively faster than Gus.

Anyway, finally a decent outing against Dallas. Our top guys did well as did Ericsson. Ericsson looks like a different player since returning from injury.

Chicago's streak ends as Sharp finds the pipe in the shootout. Minny plays a lot like Boston defensively sans the imposing presence and skills of Chara. They clog up their zone with relentless man-to-man marking forcing the opposition to initiate attack from the point. Once that happens, they collapse back into a more traditional accordion defense with one guy ready for the outlet pass. These types of teams are tough to score on.

Not a bad offensive display against the Blues but defensive mediocrity in front of Howard remains a concern. Blowing a once insurmountable 2-0 lead to trail 2-3 proves the point. Hank has been stepping up and seems to be getting his pre-2009 groove back. Very happy about Hustlin' Hank's hattrick. Even the grossly overpaid, compulsive underachiever Fanzen worked harder than usual during most of his shifts, especially in front of the net. The PP's beginning to look good also but our PK definitely needs to get better. Important 5-3 win for us in the end. Moving into 7th place and with a game in hand, in position to move into 3rd in the West. Gotta stay ahead of the mad scramble amongst Minny, LA, Nashville and Dallas towards the end without peaking too soon.

Sharks are for real this year. BJT has always been a great reader of the game and goal-maker (not goal-scorer, mind you) as exemplified by his prolific primary assist-scoring, but this year he seems to have more time on the puck, and is making tough passes look easy with better use of the ice around him. His subtle adjustments while he holds the puck is creating great angles and passing lanes to feed those passes through. Proud of my Northern California Bay Area hommies.

What a pitiful loss to the BJs! We started well enough and Franzen put us ahead 1-0. Then he decided to disappear alongside Hank and it was all BJs from that point on. Anisimov is a fine young player. Very skilled and not at all lacking when it comes to getting the forecheck going.

Horrible lapses from our mediocre defense, only Kronwall and Ericsson seem to know how to play defense throughout their shifts, gave the game away at 2-4. As simple as that. Time to get some solid D-Men Kenny!

The Pens, by contrast had a great game on both sides of the ice. Jersey was simply waiting for a team with superior speed to come at them and paid even after the SHG gave them a chance to change this suicidal strategy against bona-fide point machines like Crosby and company. Crosby seems to be getting his groove back and if he manages to stay healthy, he'll definitely contend for the Art Ross and possibly more. Give him space and he'll make you pay. They were excellent defensively also.

and yes, Calgary Flames decided to lose all of their games (except against edmonton oilers) in this season! :(

After a few bad outings, Pens played solid and exciting last three games. Shut out vs Rangers ( 3-0 ) at Garden, Dominating Devils at home ( 5-1 ) and beating Caps away ( 6-3 ). When we play good defense, we are hard to beat, but we still run around too much on D. I guess that goes with the territory. We will never be the NJ Devils or Minny. Live and die by offense. Crosby has indeed been heating up. He started to look like his old self since the loss to Leafs. Racking up pts. Geno is missing his goal scoring touch a bit, but he is having great chances. They will start to go in for him sooner than later. He is just too good. Addition of Vokoun has really been a good strategy. Marc seems to have got the memo and he has been solid so far.

Man, whatever happened to Ovehckin? Too predictable. I was shocked by the way Niklas Backstrom is playing. He looks completely out of sorts. He is a fantastic talent. Montreal is playing great. Therrien knows how to coach.

Sohel- SJ are a great team. But, we have been saying that for the last six-seven years. Come playoff time and we will see if its any different this year. Teams to watch out for is Blues in West. They are the LA Kings of this year. I will go out on a limb and predict SCF for them this year. And, don't worry about Red Wings. You know they will be in Playoffs and all bets are off once they are in.

One last pt : I expect a fire sale in Calgary if things remain status quo. Iginla to Pens has been a dream for years and that might just become a reality if Flames miss out. Of course, we have to stay in the hunt for playoffs, or we will be the one selling ..

Another predictable loss to the Bruins. At least Reimer was solid and it was only a one goal game. Their physical game just completely dominates us.

Big litmus test coming up agaisnt the Canes. They are a bubble team just like us. How you deal with these teams makes the difference in the end. We've already failed twice against these types of teams this year - Buffalo and NYI loses. Hope we can pull out with a W today, and I dearly pray to Allah for Kessel's first goal. The fact that we've been able to stay at .500 without Lupul, and Kessel scoring zero goals is a miracle.

Regarding Ovi - I think predictability is one of the factors. I also remember reading how he had lost focus, and wasn't really practising/preparing the same way as he used to back in the day (Yuvraj-ish story I guess). Might be roids too. He had super human strength back in his glory days, which he clearly seems to lack now. Got man handleded by Dion a couple times in our recent encounter.

I am glad you point the roid story out regarding Caps, Ovi and few of their players. Was it just a rumor? or, they were busted with their hands in cookie jar? Ovi has super strength. Poeple just fly when he hits them. He is also playing LW this year.

Kessel will be traded at deadline if Leafs falter. I do like their team. They got speed to kill. They give us nightmares. Leafs and Habs have our number.

I believe it's still unconfirmed. Just a rumor now I guess then.

His strength is still quite good, much more than average, but its not like those days where he scored 50+ goals a year. He could literally take on two NHLers at a time and outstrength them. I remember Schenn once completely bounced off of him 3 years ago. Schenn himself is pretty big, and strong, and lays people out on a semi-regular basis. To see him get bounced off Ovy was quite amusing. In contrast, the stronger players in the league (Chara/Phaneuf types) seem to have a much easier time dealing with him these days.

Ya..plus, he doesn't train hard in off season like some other superstars like Sid and Stamkos. He is a known partier. Anyway, during the broadcast yesterday, they showed Canucks GM in attendance in D.C. Wonder whats that all about? Luongo perhaps? I would love to see Ovi out of East though..lol

Kessel won't be traded. At least not this year, unless he actually comes out and asks for a trade.

Nonis has said multiple times that he will not blow-up the team, and will continue to build on top of what we have. Plus it makes no sense for us. We will never get the value we dealt him for, meaning we'll maybe get a top 5 pick or a blue chip prospect or two. The best case scenario in that case is if one of the players turn out to be as good as Kessel, but that will probably take another 5 years. That would sound good if Kessel was like 30-35. But he's only 25, which is roughly the same age as the rest of our core. We finally have a balanced offense now. While getting a #1 C is essential, dealing our #1 winger for him takes us back to the situation Sundin was in.

I just don't see how trading Kessel makes any sense for us, since we are not going to be doing a Oiler-esque rebuild. The problem with the team lies in defensive depth/personnel, and a lack of physical presence. While Randy C's system is good, having 2 AHL caliber D (Kostka/Fraser) leaves your defense prone to fatal errors.

I lost interest in Jordan Staal. Heard he isn't too hot in Carolina right now. Sutter is fitting in well. Wish he scored a bit more but his defensive game is spot on. Great face off guy as well.

I agree. But, Kessel and trade are two words that are eternally married to each other. Every year you hear it. Makes no sense for Leafs. Guy is a sniper.

Will you guys take Tangradi+Depres( or, Morrow )+ a pick for Kulemin? Malkin keeps crying about this dude all the time. I go to this Sushi place a lot near my house where a lot of Pens hang out. Malkin basically lives there. Every time his buddy Kulemin is in town, he is on a date with him..lol

Just Sharks just lost their first game in regulation time to the Ducks. The Ducks looked solid after a lucky bounce had them tie the game at 1 a piece.

The Sharks have been running out of steam after beating us in the playoffs, and other teams in the West, especially Chicago, St. Louis and Anaheim will run them just as dry. Most teams in the West, other than the Flames, can have the same effect on them also during this hypercompetitive season in a hypercompertetive conference in the most competitive league in professional sports.

I reckon the Oilers to be the Kings of this year, although the Kings can easily come together at the right time and start peaking during the playoffs. But they'll need to pull things together pronto down in Hollywood because this is a truncated season.

They need to find a way not to peak too soon. I still feel they're at least one great, pure goalscorer short of winning the Cup. Maybe Couture will evolve into that role but not for at least two years.

We'll probably make the playoffs again this year bit won't be a contender with only 2 solid defensemen (Kronwall and Ericsson). You need 6 of those, and unless Kenny makes some solid moves before the playoffs and Brendan Smith learns to play NHL defense and really step up, we'll fall 2 or 3 men short. Our offense will do fine even if Franzen continues to underachieve and Bert stays hopelessly Bert. Datsyuk, Hank, Filppula, Helm, Cleary, Brunner, Nyquist, Eaves, Abdelkader and Miller will do their jobs for sure, and the newer ones may even step up to the next level.

I lost interest in Jordan Staal. Heard he isn't too hot in Carolina right now. Sutter is fitting in well. Wish he scored a bit more but his defensive game is spot on. Great face off guy as well.

As you know, Jordan's one of my favorite players. I'd trade Franzen and Bert with a bundle of cash to have him wear the winged wheel. He scored his first of the year but probably won't be as productive as he was with the Pens. But his solid two way presence may make Eric and Semin more productive. The Canes look good despite this slow start, and may yet surprise many people come playoff time.

Damn, it's pretty cool that you guys go to the same restaurant. Have you seen him in person?

If we were shopping him, I would take Morrow + Tangradi + 2nd for him. That's a really solid offer for us, and I don't see many teams topping it. I'm not sure if he's available or not, as there hasn't been any reports to suggest either way.

Kulemin is a very good 2-way winger, who is best described as a hybrid power forward. He is a bull on skates who drives to the net, works great along the boards, and is a tenacious forechecker. A couple of the assists he has gotten is a direct result of the D turning it over because of his pressure down the wing. His finishing ability is that of your 15-20 goal scorer. If you consistently give him good chances around the net, that total can jump to 25-30 goals.

So basically, you're looking at a very complete player, who can do it all except for making plays. There is a lot to like about this guys game. He would be pretty nasty on Malkin's/Crosby's wing.

I lost interest in Jordan Staal. Heard he isn't too hot in Carolina right now. Sutter is fitting in well. Wish he scored a bit more but his defensive game is spot on. Great face off guy as well.

He's done exactly as advertied. Excellent defensive game, and effective on the offensive end. I think the people who are complaining about him are the ones who expected him to turn into a 1B type center (60-70 pts) due to the increased ice-time. People often fail to realise that a player's production is not linearly related to their ice-time. They also forget contributions that do not show up on the score sheet. His current production + defensive play fits Staal/Semin a lot better than another high scoring forward, as Sohel bhai pointed out.

The SJ/Ana game was really good. Very close contest, like always, with supreme display of skill from both teams, and goalies. The Ducks dominated for the most part, but couldn't make it count until a very lucky bounce for Koivu, and an absolute blast by Souray. Sharks looked a step behind them for the most part. Kyle Palmieri and Sami Vatanen were very impressive. Palmieri has a lethal release, and some soft hands which allow him to work some magic in tight spaces. Vatanen is just a very good skater on the back end, who looks to be in the mold of Gardiner and Justin Schultz. On a couple occasions he effortlessly went around Sharks players and made everybody else look a step slower than him. This Ducks team is for real. I can see them going deep this year if they stay injury free, and get consistent goaltending.

Don't get me wrong. I think Sharks are a superb team. See no weakness. But, the playoff pedigree is missing, and until they change it, its hard for me to see them winning a cup. Maybe, this is the year.

Oilers have no defense bro. No real goaltending either. I see them missing playoffs, unless they address the defense. They will eventually have to move on from some of the stud forwards they have picked over the years of having the no.1 pick. Soon their rookie contracts will be up and they will all command high salary elsewhere. I think they are a perfect dance partner with Pens. We have a plethora of high end young defensive prospects and they have wingers galore.

Yes, can never write off the Champs. Kings will be around.

Jordan is great. His ceiling is so high. His defensive game is peerless. Too bad he was stuck at no.3 center here, but how can you move him ahead of Sid and Geno? Hope he does well. We don't win the cup without him. He is still very young. He will score a lot of points. He will finally be on a PP, which he never was here. But, I don't think he is a 1B as leafs PWN said. People may have unrealistic expectation of him in Carolina. Also, keep in mind he always faced the third pairing D when he was with Pens. That won't happen any more.

@ Leafs PWN- No, never saw Kulemin here with Geno. But, saw Geno numerous times there. Seen Sid, Neal, Letang..all of them. One night last year the whole Senators team was there when I went. Its a very popular hang out for hockey players. Food is great. Owner is a friend of Mario. He even opens the place only for players if they are traveling back to Pittsburgh late at night after a game somewhere.

You give a good account of Kulemin. That's the exact type of players Geno likes on his wing, plus he has obvious chemistry with him. They are linemates in Russsia and KHL.

Ducks are scary. Big, strong, skilled. Washington was nuts to fire BB. Look what he has done with them. And, is Selanne ever gonna age? what a tremendous player he is.

That is just an unusual number of scouts for a game. Plus, Nonis had said that he would re-evaluate the team around the 10 game mark, and decide who to move around this time. I'd say Mac is definitely available, and maybe they are listening to offers for Kulemin, who knows.

Nonis said that he was initially pushing for a traditional rebuild, but Burke shunned that idea. Maybe he sees how bad we really are, and is gonna aim for a top 5 pick year. That would be much better for us than getting our **** kicked as the 8th seed, or finished between 9th-11th in the East, like we are projected to be ATM.

While Vancouver Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider hasn't spoken much about Roberto Luongo making four straight starts for the club, his agent Mike Liut shared his concerns about the situation.

Liut told The Vancouver Sun on Monday that he hopes that the Luongo trade saga can play out sooner rather than later.

"Our concern is we were hoping that this would be the year that Cory would play 75 per cent of the games," Liut told the paper. "We are only interested in resolution, we are not going to get into the finger-pointing game and to that end you have to take a step back and you have to give them latitude to make a business decision."

Good win for Leafs last night. Something is wrong with Caps and Ovechkin. Red Wngs had another disappointing loss at home. Something is not right. I think Red Wings will make some big trades at the deadline, or wait until end of season to lure some big free agents. Blackhawks continue to roll. Pens are on a roll too. Four wins in a row now. We are playing good defense. Killed 7 PP last night. When we play good defense, we are hard to beat, because we WILL score. Team plays better on road ( 5-1 ) and focuses more on defense.

And..last but no least, to the loser 500 fans Isles fans that showed up for the game : We get you hate Crosby. Everybody does. Boo him. Its fine. He gets booed everywhere, but to stand , clap and cheer when he took the puck to the nose says a lot about you. Guy was freaking bleeding and trainers took him to the locker room to fix the nose. They cheered all the way until he exited the rink! Superb class. I don't think any Pens fan will cheer if they see Giroux laying on the ice, or a Steelers fan cheering on Ray Lewis getting carted off the field. Saw a bit of Boston-Habs game last night. While Boston is a serious contender, don't be surprised if Habs make some serious noise. I like their style of play. MT is great coach and he is the one who built the Pens team from scratch. Bylsma came and took the glory.

Two weeks in a row now we have given up a solid Defender for nothing. I know we have too many of them. Good players are healthy scratches, and even the roster in WB/S is full. Lost Brian Strait to Isles last week on waivers who promptly signed him to a three year deal. And, last night we dealt Lovejoy to Ducks for a fifth rd ! Peanuts really. I hope Shero has a plan, because some of these players could have been dangled as a package and picks for a bigger name come deadline time. Oh well...

Caps- Pens tonight at CEC. Can we make it five in row? we will see. Caps are desperate and I sensed a bit of bad habits creeping in again last game vs Isles, even though we ended up winning.

Some interesting news out of Leaf land last night:

- Kessel is no longer untouchable. It seems like Nonis and Burke were not on the same page when it comes to this guy. Dreger says Nonis is listening to offers, and there is a lot of interest around the league (obviously). If Nonis gets a good offer, perferable from a WCF team, Kessel could be gone. He mentions though, that it was to be a good offer, so Nonis is not really shopping him. Dregers speculates a young top 4 D/young top 6 F + great prospect/high pick could get it done.

- Nonis will most likely hold a firesale if the team is 8th/9th in or worse in the East, in the near future. Meaning this year its playoffs or tank. I think the names available would be Mac, Liles, Bozak, Steckel, Kulemin and Kessel. The latter two would require good offers as they are not really being shopped.

Glad to see Nonis is going playoffs or bust. A 9th/10th place finish would be a waste of time. Hope Kessel doesn't get moved. If he does, I would hope its to Ducks for Emerson Etem + Lindholm, or to the Caps for Alzer + Kuznetsov.

If all of those prospecst are indeed available, and Nonis won't mind moving Kulemin, you guys will have him. As you know, I would do a deal for him around Morrow.

Anahiem situation also becomes very interesting now. They are playing some great hockey, and look like contenders so far, and that's without Fowler in the lineup. If they continue on this path, and still can't get Perry locked up I wonder what they will do.

Five wins in a row now for my Pens. Iffy first period, followed by a five goal eruption in second. Some of the prettiest goals too. Crosby is climbing the charts in point table all of a sudden. Saying that, big home and home against Devils this weekend. This is gonna be a tough test. Last time we kinda embarassed them for a 5-1 victory. I am sure they would want revenge. Absolutely dominated them in every fact of the game - offence, defense, faceoffs, hits, fights, and special teams. We also beat the **** out of them in multiple scrums. There were a crap ton of penalties thrown out in this game. Felt like an old school Leafs/Habs Game.

After going 0 for 11, Kessel now with 2 goals in 2 games, and 10 pts in 12 games for the team lead. JVR scored again, and leads the team with 7 goals now. Unimpressive 2-1 win against an offenseless Oilers. Injury has also hit this fine young team hard. Kindl and Junior played solid defense, and Lashoff is getting better by the game. Ericsson had an OK game but Howard was great at goal as usual. His stats this year do not do him justice, thanks largely to the mediocrity in front of him. White and Quincey are way too sloppy to play for us as senior defensemen in their respective pairings. Datsyuk had a great game as usual. Some of his takeaways were breathtaking. Should've had more than just a goal and an assist. Hank and Damien played well but Franzen was his old self again, deciding to play hard only 25% of his shifts. He has go to go. The 3rd and 4th lines have been making things happen and seem to be getting better with each game. Helm's return may make them one of the very best in the league.

Smith outlasts Niemi as the Sharks go down to the Yotes at the Tank.

It was weird to see the Habs get blown away like that. Don't think they "just had a bad day". This is the least competitive Montreal team I've seen in years. How they're in 7th place in beyond me. Pens ran out of patience and then just fell apart discipline-wise and of course that was going to play right into Jersey's hands.

Leafs beat down on the Flyers 5-1. Great game by the group, who looked gassed at the beginning. The 4th line really brought some momentum back in the game after their goal and consistent physical game. Colton Orr has really improved his game ever since being demoted to the AHL. He skates well now, plays smart hockey in our own end, and beats up the big boys. Fraser McLaren has been a great addition as well. Along with McClemment, who has been really solid this season, we have a good looking 4th liner after a long time.

A dandy goal by JVR against his old team tonight, by taking Schenn to the net. That felt great :D Kadri made a great saucer pass for his 2nd assist of the night. The kids all played well.

The one big loss in all of this was Reimer's groin injury in the 2nd. He has been a rock for us in net this year, and is a big reason the team has been playing with so much confidence lately. Hopefully it's nothing serious, and he can return soon. Tied with the Pens for 4th in the East right now!

Yep, the system is the key here. WIlson had no defensive structure at all, and insisted on playing a run n gun game, which doesn't work in todays NHL, as the caps figured out.

Randy C's system has been great, and the players have bought into it, something they never did with RW. Some big additions have helped out too - Kadri, McClemment (RC insisted on signing him) and Komarov.

Kadri is still leading the team in scoring with 14 pts, playing just 14 minutes a night. Komarov (a Leafs late round pick) leads the entire league in hits, plays a solid 2-way game, and really helps bring up the energy level of the entire team while his time on ice. McClemment has just been that excellent defensive 4th line C we have lacked. Guy does everything well, except for scoring.

I think Randy C's biggest contribution has been towards Kadri's game. He put him back at center (he was playing wing in his previous NHL stints), and helped improve Kadri's confidence. That move solved the center issue we were having as well. We have 4 solid C's now, 3 of which are capable 2-way players.

Tonight will be a test against the high octane Tampa offence. So far we've been able to shutdown Montreal, Washington and Pittsburgh fairly well.

A lot of this success with the young players (Frattin, Kadri, Fraser) goes down to Dallas Eakins in the AHL. He has done a great job helping the players down there improve. The Calder Cup finals was a nice coming out party for our prospects.

Even Colton Orr looks like a different player after his stint there. Eakins told him to lose weight, and go back to playing like his NYR days. He has been excellent this year so far, and has been playing well enough to earn 10 mins/night. Getting that kind of minutes from your 4th line is a nice bonus.

The 20 year old Jonas Brodin looked very good for Miny last night. That seems to be the norm from him this season. The composure, positioning and IQ this guy has is just unreal. He played about 21 mins last night (#3 in mins) and looked very comfortable. He seems to have a great breakout pass as well. Too bad Minny doesn't have the system to utilize it. In a more offensive minded team, he would've had 6-7 assits by now.

There is no doubt in my mind that this guy will be one of the best defenceman in the league within 5 years. The only reason why he's relatively unknown is because he's from Europe.

Leafs beat the Flyers once again, 3-2 this time, at Wells Fargo. This game was a very haard fought one by both teams. Lots of physical play, and limited quality chances. The Flyers put on immense pressure towards the end, but the Leafs were able to sustain their lead. There is no way we would have been able to do this last year.

Kadri made two beauty plays to setup the 2nd and 3rd goals. He now goes back on top for team lead in scoring (17), and tied for team lead in assists (12). The scoring lead has been a revolving door between Kessel, JVR and Kadri. If Lupul and Fratt were healthy, they would've probably been in the mix too. It's great to have balanced scoring for a change.

Kadri has been a revelation this year. We knew the kid had skill, but I don't think anyone expected him to perform this well, this early. His vision in the offensive zone is just something else. Can't wait to see him centering Frattin and JVR/Lupul when they are healthy!

Well, Kadri's been hyped for a few seasons now, it's about time he started living up to it.

Takes time for a young player to develop, unless you are a sure fire superstar like Crosby, Towes, Kane, Stamkos, Malkin, Ovi etc who had impact right away.

I read that Bobby Mac interview for that Tor radio station. Who wouldn't love Perry? We would love to pair him with Crosby. But, I don't know if he is gonna be rental or for long term. If long term, that means one of Malkin or Letang have to go. Both are due for extension. I am not willing to part ways with Malkin, especially now that Jordan is gone. Letang remains a defensive liability at times, but guy is a stud. Had four pts last night. What a game it was vs Habs. 7-6 OT win. But, defense is in shambles and Vokun is a bum. We really need to upgrade defense ASAP, but I am not sure it will matter, since Bylsma is in love with puck moving fast defenders. He hates solid crease clearing defensive defensemen. That is the very reason why we have been losing in playoffs, and Shero is just enabling him. It was as upsetting a 7-6 win that I have ever seen. Offense is never our problem. We have scored 75+ goals already. But, this Bylsma is just ruining everything with his BS. I am so waiting for him to get canned. Just had enough.

Beamer
March 3, 2013, 10:50 AM
He dodged a bullet by starting Vokun, who has been terrible. The last two games he started, he gave up ten goals. Yet, Bylsma went with him last night which upset MAF and he let it be known somewhat. He had so many family members in stands, yet he sits him for Vokun. He plays favoritism a lot. Two of the worst players in the team are Glass and TK, but Bylsma favorite, so they continue to play. For a team as skilled as ours, he continues to preach goal line to blue line stretch pass, hoping it will get tipped! We should be playing puck possession, like Therrien taught us or what Mike Babcock does ( We could use him BTW ), yet this career fourth liner coach wants the team to play like he did. I can't stand his BS anymore. Its not too late. If we keep him, we will be out in first round. They will fire him then.

I found the 7-6 game to be quite entertaining from a netural pov :P Nice end to end hockey, but goaltending was suspect for both teams. Price hasn't been that great this year. He's good, but not up to the standard he has set for himself. I have seen hime give up quite a few softies this year.

I liked the Van-LA game, as expected. Two of the best teams in the league squaring off is always interesting. I particularly don't enjoy LA hockey, but I love Vancouver hockey. Their puck possesion game is excellent, often letting you see how much talent that roster has.

Scheider was absolutely on his game on Saturday. He made some difficult point blank saves look easy. Also noticable was Drew Doughty. The ease with which this guy carries the puck out of his own zone still amazes me. It feels like the rest of the players are standing still when he is weaving through from his own blue line to the other teams one. LA had atleast 3 quality scoring chances from his rushes.

Overall the game was similar to the Pittsburgh game in the sense that the teams pretty much traded goals until the third period, where Vancouver pulled ahead with a 2 goal lead. The most impressive goal for the night was Mason Raymond's snipe from about halway between the faceoff dot and the blue line. He absoutely sniped it in half stride, just like Kessel's goal against Winnipeg.

Some trade winds regarding Kulemin are picking up - Nonis is shipping him around it seems (Strickland I think). He is struggling to score goals this year. Seems like he's really lost his touch. After 3 straight seasons of 15+ goals, he has scored 9 in his last 100 games. St.Louis and Detroit are also apparently sniffing around the Leafs to see if they can pickup a D or two.

Leafs facing the Devils tonight. Historically we have had success against them, but they will be a tough team to beat. If our defensive system holds up, we have a good chance to win, as our offence is much more talented than theirs.

Wasn't entertaining for me. My seven month old was wondering why daddy got so angry at the TV ..lol. Bylsma is very close to losing it. Forgot to mention that he also wont play Simon Depres, who was a beast at the game after being healthy scratch for three straight! Vokun is torture.

I don't like watching LA and Minn. Van cycles beautifully. No doubt about that. However, Chicago is in a different league. They not only cycle, they seem to float when they do it. If they don't win it all, it will be an utter disaster in Chicago.

Kulemin to Pitt has died down a bit. Hot rumor with PItt now involves Minn ( Setoguchi, Broussard ), Cal ( Iginla, Stepniak, Glencross ) and Dallas ( Morrow )

Please beat the Devils tonight. I will be at CEC tonight for the Pens-Lightning. Office tkts tonight.

Devils are in trouble without Broduer. Kadri must be laughing at Ron Wilson. Great win !

It was a privilege to be at the arena to watch Geno-Sid-Stamkos play. Geno goal was special. What can you say about Crosby? We are fortunate to have him. His consistency in everything is so amazing. Just goes about his business and rakes in points. He wins faceoffs, scores, sets up team mates ( Kunitz is having a career year ), picks the pocket of opposing forwards, kills penalties..just a perfect hockey player. I thought our defense was bad but Tampa defense is shocking. Any other night and we would have walked away with nine goals last night. Wide open shots from Malkin-Neal, hit the posts three times behind the goalie, even the puck stopped on the goal line once after it beat their goalie. We thought it was one of those nights where you play like you are about to walk in and blow the doors out of them but for some reason the bounces were not going your way. Had that feeling throughout the night. Luckily Geno and Sid put an end to that.

The Leafs have a tendency to fall away semi-mid-league, except that this year the semi-mid-league is the mid-league. That might be "part" of the reason why it's looking promising this year. Not really a solid win. A win nonetheless. We were in control for the first 50 mins, going up 5-2, but then chose to sit back and allow the Sens to get right back in the game with 2 quick goals. RC was pissed at the end, as he stromed off after the final horn. He usually congratulates the assistant coaches. If we continue this trend of long stretches of lazy play, we will get killed in the playoffs.

We'll probably make it this year because the team is playing a good defensive system. It's not like last year were we just outscored our opponents - that kind of a strategy is never sustainable. Plus we have secondary scoring now, which adds a new dimension to how teams defend against us. Shutting down Kessel isn't enough now.

The shortened season adds to it as well, since a collapse can't put you down that much. But I don't think there will be a collapse due to the aforementioned reasons. Goaltending has been great too. Reimer is 9-3 with a .920+ SV% and sub 2.8 GAA.

Tonight we face our Kryptonite - the Bruins. We are 0-7 against them in our last 7 meetings.

The National Hockey League Players' Association has given its approval to the NHL's proposed re-alignment plan

Western Conference

Pacific Division: Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

Mid-West Division: Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg.

Eastern Conference

Central Division: Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Toronto.

Atlantic Division: Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, N.Y. Islanders, N.Y. Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington.

The top three teams in each division would make the playoffs, along with the four wild-card teams - the best two non-division winners in each conference.

I hope Perry becomes available, and we trade Kessel (1 extra year on contract) for him at the deadline. I have never seen a softer, sissier player than him in my life.

Loses every puck battle, never hits, never takes a hit to make plays, never goes into the corners, and stays 10 ft away from any type of contract. This loser would be good on a team like Pittsburgh/Boston/Anahiem where his linemates are x2 better than him, and draw the main focus. He can then regularly float around and avoid contact and still be effective, since the others will clear out space for him.

Burke did a good job with us in general, but he REALLY ****ed up with the Kessel trade. Payed the price of a franchise player for one that is not such.

Lol...you are angry this morning. Just one game. Besides, you have Pens on Sat, which is usually a win ! I think what Leafs need is a legit #1 C. In that regard, I think you guys should really try to get Getzlaf instead of Perry. Leafs have decent amount of good wingers.

I think that contract is fine. It's 8 years, which is the key here. Parise/Suter got 7.5 on 13 years. 5 less years, but .75 more is a fair trade off.

Plus, check the salary those two are getting in the first 8 years. The cap hit of that is more than 8.5M. With the new CBA rules in place, players like Getzlaf will have huge caphits commonly now. He's a playmaker too, so the goal count isn't really a good indicator of his play.

You guys extended Crosby at the perfect time. I wonder if Malkin is willing to sign for 8.7/8 now though. I think you guys might have to give him Ovy money to keep him happy.

I wonder what Perry is gonna get in FA now. Probably 9M for 7 years if it's open bidding.

Yea, I hope Burke can convince Anahiem to make that move

No doubt Getz is a very very good player. Ducks probably had to do it. No option but to do it.

Who knows what Malkin would ask. But, in the past, he refused to take more than Sid. So, I am hoping he would do the same again. He is kinda shy guy who doesn't like the limelight like other flashy Russians. He is content with what he got. I am assuming of course. He is not gonna make more than Sid. Nor should he. This summer is very important for us. Both Malkin and Letang are up next year. I am sure Shero will try to lock up both. If he gets the sense that they would wait (a la Staal ) till free agency, he would deal one this summer. My money is on Letang getting moved. He is gonna demand $7 mil. Thats too much for a team with Crosby and Malkin. Besides, puck moving young D men/PP QB s are organizations strength. Its harder to find a Malkin. If both stays and signs long term, then likes of Orpik will be surely dumped and maybe even Fleury traded. So, we will see.

I'm pleasantly surprised to still be in playoff contention with our mediocre defense and yet another typical year from the grossly overpaid underachiever by the name of Johan Franzen. Our 3rd and 4th lines have stepped up and young defensemen -- especially Ericsson, Kindl, Lashoff and Smith have been getting better by the game. Whether they'll be good enough for the playoffs is another story. Costly defensive lapses are there, as is our inability to play all 60 minutes, especially when other teams can easily take away the middle of the ice from us and force us along the boards.

Offensively, Andersson and Tatar are getting better by the game and Brunner has been playing well above expectation. That's good news for Hank and Pavel both of whom continue to play hard. That being said, our PP continues to be appalling.

This firewagon hockey is surely entertaining, but unless we buckle down on defense ( played good last night though ), we may not go far in playoffs. But it sure is fun to watch this team. Pure entertainment. 3 goals short of 100 already! Geno is on shelf again for 1-2 weeks. Shoulder got hit bad vs Toronto. Missed four games earlier with a concussion. I hope its not one of those years for him. Hoping for a speedy return, because we could use the MVP. We should let him heal. Team is doing ok without him, but a healthy Malkin is a must for playoffs. From what I've seen (Tor games + other games), your defense needs a major facelift for you guys to be considered a favourite going into this post season. Run n Gun is fun to watch, but its not very well suited on the defensive side if you don't have 4-5 high quality skaters/top 3 goalie (Lundqvist/Brodeur lite). The only high quality d I have seen for you guys are Martin/Letang. Letang's d is suspect at times, but he contributes too well on the offensive side.

You guys need a couple hard hitting shutdown types, and a more balanced system real bad. The hard hitters will struggle in run n gun anyways. A team like the Bruins can beat you guys in a 7 game series right now.

The reason why you guys have trouble beating us is because we have a very dynamic offense which takes advantage of your weak d.

Its too late to have a major face lift on D. The team D was built on the idea( shero /Bylsma )that the new NHL rewards quick puck moving D men over slumbering crease clearing D men. So, we went with that. Got rid of Cup winners Scuderi-Gill. But, there is obviously a need for big shut down type mean D and obviously in playoffs that need is magnified. Only Orpik fits that bill and he has looked slower recently. Martin-Letang-Niskanen-Depres are all smaller quick puck movers. They have drafted similar players in recent drafts as well. But, after last years playoff debacle, I think belatedly they have come to their realization. You need a combination of both, not just one type of player playing in your defense. That is why Eaton is playing more ( stay at home ) and I am sure we will get a Douglas Murray or JayBo type come trade dedaline.

Bruins will probably win a seven game series right now against us. We went 1-3 vs Bruins last year though. We can actually play great team defense when we are committed. In the past, we have played well against teams like Bruins, or Rangers ( they have tough time beating us ) or Devils - all great team defense. We just get up for those teams! Its the teams like Toronto ( don't take offence ) and Isles that we had trouble getting up for. Toronto has full attention this year.

Yea, JayBo would be a great addition for you guys if he decides to show up on a nightly basis. He is very sound defensively, while being one of the best skaters in the league. He'd fit in quite well.

Saw CBJ v Vancouver for a bit last night. The Jackets looked like a completely different team from the start of the season. They play with a lot more confidence now, resulting in better utilization of their speed and skill. They broke into the Vancouver zone way too easily for most of the 1st, just by using their speed. Once in, they did a nice job of creating traffic, and throwing the puck at the net. They looked like a pretty hardworking group out there, a must for a lesser talented team.

RyJo looked good, as did Bobrovsky. They've both been playing really well recently, and have looked like legit highend talent over this 5 game Jackets win streak. The addition of some youngsters (Atkinson, Moore, Erixon) seems to have injected a lot of energy into that lineup. They're playing without 3 of their regular D atm I think.

It'll be interesting to see how long they can keep this up.

 @ Leafs last night. Losing to a team like the Jets, in the fashion we did is unacceptable. Defense has gone back to being ****, by allowing 13 goals in the last 3. We've gotta clean up our act soon or else we might waste that early advantage we gained on bubble teams.

What a satisfying and improbable come back win vs Big Bad Bruins last night ! Being down 2-0 with six mins to go in the game, we stormed back with three goals in span of four mins, courtesy Brandon Sutter. Defense played good again, only allowing 16 shots, and we peppered them with 36 shots. Their goalie almost stole the game as he was really good. Soon as they had the 1-0 lead they went to a full trap mode in first period and sat back and back. I am not sure its a good strategy vs Pens. They dump and skate backwards to their blue line ! Unbelievable. It almost worked. They have great structure and it took a while to break through, which is difficult when five people sit at the neutral zone. I would like to see how Bruins play when they are behind. It looks incredibly difficult to beat them when you are behind. They are too defensive IMO. I guess Julien was fired by the Devils for being too defensive !! Anyway, like I said, we can play with them. We are 4-1 vs them in last five meetings. Our PK still sucks. Can't replace Jordan Staal that easily. Nobody challenged Chara ( I guess its not easy in front of that shot ) and he had time to tee it up on their PP. Bruins PK is stellar. Best I have seen and Patrice Bergeron is without question the best Selke player right now.

Nice job beating the Bruins. **** them!

If you see Kostka and Holzer playing D tonight, expect a Pens win. These two AHL plugs have been now exposed due to their lack of speed. At the beginning, they were in game shape as opposed to the NHLers just starting off, and thus looked pretty good. Lately, forwards have been blowing by them, making it look like they're skating in molases.

I wonder what RC is thinking. He's got a smooth skating, puck moving guy in Liles just sitting in the PB, and Gardiner, another puck mover absolutely destroying the AHL, and he chooses to play these two on a regular basis, with Holzer being the top pair partner for Phaneuf

It's amazing how well Phaneuf has played this year given the fact that he has had a AHLer as his partner for the entire year. We seriously need some help to support him, or else he's gonna burn out by the playoffs (if we make it).

Haha true. I noticed a couple of really good plays by Bennett in the last game. You guys have another great winger in the making with this kid. I have him in one of my keepers.

Well people are fed up with the two plugs, and want to see our top defensive prospect prospect Gardiner, up with the club. He already played full time (75 games) in 2011-2012, leading all rookie D in points (30). He was playing top 4 minutes. This season, he suffered a concussion in the AHL, and has been there ever since. He has 30 pts in 40 AHL games, and even our AHL coach thinks he should've been up weeks ago. #freegardiner is a fan movement resulting from the accumulation of all those factors.

Verry happy with the Flyers suckage. Most annoying fans in the league after Bruins fans. They all chant stupid **** during the games, and are very hostile to away fans, as you may know.

This is what happens when you have 12 top 6 forwards and 2 top 4 defenseman. Holmgren should have gotten a couple solid defensive pieces out of Carter/Richards instead of going all out for offense. Bryz hasn't been too great either. I think he might actually get bought out. It's apparent he isn't a fit for their system.

I just read that Gardiner is comparable to Letang talent wise.. Wow ! then he must play. Has a two way contract, so its easier to send him down.

Bennett is the prized player of the organization. Only 20 and coming off wrist surgery last year in U of Denver. Started the season in W-B/S. But, when NHL season started, and one week into the camp, everybody knew he belongs in the big club. Still not strong enough physically and wrist still doesn't have full power. Once he fills in, and gets the wrist to where he should be, I expect big things from him in future.

Don't get me started with Flyers fan base. I can spend an entire day. They are sub- human. I went to one game in Philly a few years back, and it was literally the worst experience. Never again. I was thinking somebody was gonna jump me. I can handle myself one on one pretty much anyone my weight range ( years of boxing and weight training !! lol ), but not ten people. I was with my brother -in- laws and they are from Philly ( Unfortunately Flyers fans, and they are nice people..lol ). They were getting called snitches, traitors etc etc..( they had Flyers crap jersey on too ). Three vs Ten drunks is no match. Yes, they chant stupid s***.

There are many stories about Flyers fans that are better told by players and reporters. For example : One guy was waiting to fight George Laraque outside team bus, and another time whole team bus was being pelted with tomatoes and eggs. The cops apparently watched. They are a nasty city with nasty hockey fans, except my in laws ! lol..

Don't know much about Bruins. Don't see them often. I guess they are not in division, so the contempt is not there as much. Rangers fans are awful too, though not in Flyers class. I think travelling Habs fans are quite annoying with their stupid ole ole chant..

Anyway..screw Flyers, I hope they rot..

You little down this AM, leafs PWN? I would be too. I don't think we had any business getting one point last night, let alone two. We were as flat as one could be. PP looked disinterested, though Leafs were very good in their kill, always had sticks in lane ( McClement especially ), and we were guilty of predictable passing attempts. Fleury actually won the two points last night. He was brilliant and defense has tightened up a lot in last three games. 6-1, 3-2, 3-1 wins will attest to that. Our big trump card is Letang. Guy is so smooth on attack. I knew it would be a struggle ( as is always vs Leafs ) after that huge emotional win vs Bruins. It was a trap game. They were guilty of looking ahead to the weekend back to back vs Rangers and Bruins. Its not an excuse.

Captain showed why he is the best. He was bottled up all night. But, with players like him, it always is a moment or two of unexpected brilliance . Made that unbelievable pass on the first goal, and on the game winner, he broke up a would be sure tap in goal by JVR, and we went the other way. Very lucky to win. Leafs once again outplayed us for 53 mins, as Randy C would say. But, wins are wins, and two points are two points. I am rooting for you guys rest of the way and Winnipeg Jets. I would love to see theses two in playoffs. Jets won a big game last night.

Seven in row is good. But, it is also bad, because when you are winning, GM is often reluctant to make any moves even if needs are obvious. Our fourth line is a sham. Third line is awful sans Brandon Sutter ( who moved up to second line without Malkin ). This is where we need new players. Tyler Kennedy has become a joke. Matt Cooke is not the same anymore. We need a third fourth line forward who is a good PK player, and need one more top four D, who is big and physical. Brooks Orpik is on his way out . Lots of treads on his tire. He has been a valuable soldier for a decade, but time is running out. He looks slow, rarely hits and prone to bad penalties, as was evident last night. It could be his last year.

I don't want this streak to stop. But, it may as well tomorrow vs Bruins. They are mad from blowing that lead and losing to us last week. Plus, Vokoun probably starts. Lets see..

Good win against the Canucks with our big guns contributing offensively and with their 2-way skills. Even the blond sloth from Vetlanda decided to chip-in with a couple of assists. Sadly, I still don't see him coming any closer to Kronwall's offensive contribution this season. The defense is still mediocre with Kenny making no moves. Quincey's out in need of back surgery. Still in playoff contention miraculously.

Nine in a row now. Vokoun was great. We beat these Bruins five in a row dating back to last year. I am not at all worried about these Rangers/Bruins type teams. Yes, they play great defense, but offensively they are so impotent. Looks like that little rat face Marchand slashed Letang when no one was looking. God knows how long he would be out now. We are average without him. He always has the puck, QB's the PP, and great skating out of zone and distributing the puck. You can argue that he is more valuable to the team than a Crosby or Malkin. I mean it. We need to buckle down without #58. Captain was spectacular again. He is playing 200 ft hockey at full go.

I'm not a Crosby fan but truth be told, he has earned my respect ever since winning the Cup at our expense in our building just a couple of years ago. Injuries have plagued him since then but that didn't prevent him from becoming a remarkably more complete and mature player. Gone are the whining and diving, hopefully for good, and now we're treated to the immensely great offensive vision of a highly skilled and opportunistic player unrelenting in his hunger for wins and points. He's already making a strong case for himself to be the greatest, most consistent goal-maker or assist man in the fabled history of our sport. Absolute joy to watch when he's in full flow.

Beamer
March 18, 2013, 10:28 AM
It is perhaps a maturity issue with him. People forget that he just turned 25, and after almost two years away from the game, he probably reflected on his manners on ice and whether that contributed to some head shots he was taking- though undeserving. Even though I don't agree that he dived ( perhaps embellished a bit more than needed ) but he was excessive at times the way he yelled at the refs. That fat dude Hitchcock labelled him as a diver and that stayed with him for years. We looked at it as the captain trying to get the max advantage for his team, but people outside of Pittsburgh ( not Canada ) hated him for it. He plays too wired and sometimes in the past it got the worst out of him. And, when you are in the spotlight like he is, things tend to get magnified. Anyway, we like the new calmer Crosby on ice. It serves him better. He is as wired as ever, but his on ice antics are almost gone. He is better for it. Yesterday when Boychuk dived to get the penalty vs him, he just shook his head and went to the box. Few years ago, he would have complained all day about it..lol..I just love his overall game. No flash. Just brilliant at little things. Gretzky said it perfectly the other day in an article. He considers Crosby as the best superstar third line grinder the game has ever seen. So true. He loves playing in tight quarters. He rarely loses the battles in boards against much bigger men. Kunitz and Dupuis compliments him perfectly. Just hope he stays healthy the rest of his career.

No update on Letang or Malkin. As I said, team can not win without Letang. After he left the game yesterday, we got completely outclassed by Bruins. True. Huge trap game coming vs Caps tomorrow.

How about the Sens? Mclean wins the Adams this year. So much injury but they keep on ticking. Biggest surprise is Buffalo. They are on a free fall. Players fighting and pointing fingers at each other. I think they will blow up the team, that includes Ryan Miller.

Leafs PWN
March 18, 2013, 11:18 AM
Crosby's lower body strength is something else. The guy is almost impossible to knock off the puck, and wins most 2 on 1 puck battles down low. I think Gretzky's comments are perfect to describe him.

I can only image how good he would be with a David Clarkson/Dustin Brown type winger. Or *gasp* Iginla. I hope the Flames suck for the next couple games just to see Iginla and Crosby together again.

Yea Beamer bhai, I was pissed after that loss. I thought the team has overcome those days of blowing tight games, as we have held on to win a lot of tight games this year. But, with players like Crosby, any mistake you make can end up in the back of the net, which is what happened. He's just on another level right now.

We blew another game against the Jets this saturday. We came back this time from 4-1, but giving up 4 goals against the Jets in 2 straight games is pathetic. Whatever the issue is with this team, I hope Randy can help seal it up as soon as possible. The cushion of 6ish points we had over the 8th place team is all but gone now, with our recent skid of 0-3-2. Lets see what happens.

I knew you were mad : ) But, in this truncated season, sooner you move on the better. Good fight back to earn a point vs Jets being down 4-1. But, that penalty shoot out was so unbearable to watch. NHL Network had it on Live and I saw it. Reimer was good. It seemed like nobody will win. Not to brag or anything, but did you know that Pens hasn't missed a shootout goal this year? Crosby, Letang, Malkin, Neal scored every shootout goal this year. I find that amazing. 100% so far.
I think having Lupul back is huge for you guys. BTW, I no longer want Kulemin. Saw him twice now and I think better trading partner for him is with St.Louis. McCarthur is someone we covet, but I doubt Leafs are sellers as they are in thick of things, and should remain so. Its a vastly improved team.

Would love an Iginla. But, not gonna happen. They want too much, but you never know. Flames are playing decent enough but I am afraid they won't make it. Feaster won't pull the trigger to rebuild. I think Kunitz is playing fine. Clarkson would be an asset though. Dustin Brown would look good but I doubt Kings trade their captain. There were rumors last year about Brown for Staal. But, Staal is gone. Pens will move to get a top four D and third-fourth line help. I am almost sure of it now. I don't think we are going to add a top six forward.

64.3 M to be exact.

Jake Gardiner has been freed!!! He has 3 games of waiver eligibility left. If he doesn't impress RC in the next 2 games, he will be in the A for a while. Here's to hoping Gards has fixed whatever RC doesn't like about his game. The bonus out of all this is that the plug Holzer is gone. He isn't even close to being NHL ready yet.

Lupul, Gardiner, Liles in, Steckel, Holzer, Costco out. Hopefully these upgrades help us complete the push for the playoffs.

Contracts like Bobby Ryan's, Carter's and Richards' one look amazing right now. Even though the length is huge, by the end of the deal (in 8 years), these guys will still be worth 5M if you factor in a rising cap and inflation. Gotta think Ryan has huge trade value. He's a great player to begin with, and that contract just makes his value that much more. He's gonna command the same return as Richards, or even more - A young top 6 forward and a blue chip prospect. Obviously, this is in case Anahiem wants to move him.

Jonas Brodin just looks that much better every time I watch him. He's getting some points now too. This kid, and Suter have really changed up the Wild's D this year. He'll be a top 10 D man in 3 years time. Book it!

Ten in a row now. Very hard fought victory. Team looks like a different team without Letang. Need him back ASAP. Sid hit the half century mark of pts.

Yes, those contracts look great. I will throw in James Neal in there too. Another four years left for $5mil for a 40 goal scorer ain't too bad.

Haven't followed West much this year, but Wild should be good, after all the money they spent ! Plus, Yeo is a good coach. Good structurally. Won a cup with us as asst.

Yea Ottawa's draft history under Murray is pretty awesome. They continue to draft well no matter where, and produce high end talent. But this year though, I think it's more coaching then depth. MacLean is a master tactician, and has really utilized the strength of every single player he has. That added with some strong goaltending from both Bishop and Anderson has given them a fighting chance in every game. I can only imagine how good they'll be next year when one of the best centers in the league, and an elite dman return to their lineup. Other players will return too (Cowen, Michalek, etc), but those two guys are beasts.

I remember back when the Sens drafted Karlsson - lots of people, including me, were laughing at Karlsson's weight (150 lbs), and thought he'd be a tweener at best.

What a dumbass hit by Lupul. He's gonna get 1-3 games for this. Too bad we're facing Boston and Ottawa in the next 3 games. We badly need forwards like him against the Bruins.

Fingers crossed its just one game and some fine. Didn't look too bad tbh.

Another huge game by Kadri and Lupul - Kadri with 3 A, and Lupul with 1 G, 1 A. Kulemin had a great game too. He hit everything that moved, really helped create some space for Lupul and Kadri, and sniped home a beauty pass from Kadri. Kulemin's got 2 in 2 games since being placed with Kadri. Now that he actually has a playmaker with him, he might break out of his funk. Grabo and Kulemin had chemistry before, but this year Grabo hasn't been creating many plays for his linemates. He seems to hog the puck until he's covered, and then makes some not so great passes to his linemates. Kulemin was at his best when Grabovsky and MacArthur were creating space, and passes for him. Can't complain too much about Grabo since he's being used in a checking role this year, something he hasn't done before.

30 pts in 30 games for Kadri now. Watch this kid play if you guys have a chance. He'll wow you with at least one pass every game.

And finally, what a run by the Pens! You guys are beasting it right now, and that's without a healthy Malkin. I think Shero might go for it this year, and get Iginla at the deadline (Bobby Mac says the process to trade him has begun, and speculates his choices are DET, PIT and 3 other teams). You guys can let him walk if cap space is a problem next year. One more thing to think about here - even though it's very likely that Malkin and Letang both re-sign, there really isn't a guarantee this entire roster/depth will still be there. This might be your best time to make another big run before extension issues pop up.

Beamer
March 21, 2013, 10:07 AM
Setoguchi is probably hearing the trade rumors everyday. Waking up finally. He is a very streaky player. People question his work ethic, but he no doubt is a talented player. Detroit is still solidly in the playoffs mix. I look at the teams below them, and I don't see anyone really challenging Detroit. So, beat the teams below you, and you should be fine. Then, at the deadline get some players ( have the cap room ) and once you are in, anything can happen. Playoffs experience is not an issue. I would hate to play Wings in the first round. CBJ's are the only challenge IMO.

Same thing goes for Leafs. Beat the teams below you ( like the Sabres tonight ), at least get a point when you play the teams above you, and Leafs should be in as well. This is a playoff team. Saw the Lupul hit. Not as bad as it looked, but still was not needed at that point when team comfortably up . He may get two. Its a phone hearing, so gotta be below four. He is a major player for the Leafs and he was missed sorely. Kadri shows flashes every game. I agree. Points are coming as well for him.

Saw the Ducks vs Hawks for a bit. What insane quality ! Two best teams no doubt. One of them would represent the West. Ducks are so physical.

Iginla to Pens are heating up. Shero is looking for a top six forward and a top four D. I don't know how he will do it. Gotta give up a lot for Iginla. At least two blue chip forwards will go the other way, along with a roster player ( Kennedy perhaps ) an a draft pick. Malkin and Letang still day to day. I think you are right. Shero will gamble this year and worry about extensions and such at a later date. We can let Iginla walk next year. We will also trade Orpik in summer to free cap. Who knows..The streak is nice. Isles tomorrow- which is another team that gives us trouble beyond...

Beamer

Also, what is wrong with Tampa? On paper the talent is as good as any team. They have a superstar ( Stamkos ), two great players ( St. louis, Vinny ), a typical crease clearing power forward ( Malone ), great rookie ( Concaher ), a Norris worthy D ( Hedman ), and tons of good complimentary players like Purcell, Nate Thompson, Matt Carle- yet they are struggling big time. Guy Boucher is a good coach too. Granted their goalies are average but still the team should be able to maintain a playoff spot. Not to mention they play in the worst division in hockey. SMH.

Rule 48 and Lupul's hit on Hedman.

I'm glad that the NHL has begun to fanatically enforce Rule 48 about illegal and deliberate hit to the head. We need good players, the ones usually targeted for such hits, to stay healthy and play. All true lovers of this great sport should want that, even when those good players are beating your team.

As a former highschool and college hockey player, I can tell you that a deliberate and malicious hit to the head can be easily differentiated from an inadvertent one brought upon by miscalculation and unstoppable momentum.

Hits to the head due to miscalculation always involve bodies facing each other and the player with possession releasing the puck very late. In those situations, the player trying to separate the player with possession with a hard check cannot stop or make last minute adjustments to avoid the head, especially on open ice or at the boards.

Deliberate hits involve a player approaching the player with possession of the puck from an oblique angle right at or very close to the blind spot of the victim. He delivers the head shot despite having enough time to adjust after the puck was released. Elevation of the elbow together with the non-striding foot gives it all away.

Dirty players are the ones who try to make their deliberate assaults look accidental by timing the illegal hit as close to the release of the puck as possible, and get away with that "oops, sorry buddy" routine after taking a penalty. Lupul's hit was a clear example of obvious malice with intent to injure. He has no reason to try to become like that. I hope this suspension teaches him a lesson.

TO had the two pts in the bag. Let it slip away once again. All the goals were PPs? Thats what the box score says. One pt is better than zero, I guess. Both Montreal and Boston won to keep the heat on us for the no.1 seed- not that it matters. There were a lot of fights between TO and Buf. Scrappy game.

Brodeur scored ( or is it Jordan Staal ? ) a goal last night ! Rangers struggle to score goals yet again.

Lupul got two games. I agree. Head shots need to go for good. We need to protect the good players for the sake of the game. When a Steckel puts away Crosby for close to two years, or Matt Cooke to Savard for good, it doesn't serve the game right. Good players that do it need to be suspended too. Lupul was rightly given one whether he meant it or not. Saw Rick Nash deliver one last night to Flieshman. That should get a look.

BTW, US and Canada hockey should name their GM and Coach soon for Sochi sometime within a month. Babcock will return for Canada with Steve Y as the GM. There is rumor here that Bylsma/Shero might get the call for US. What do you think? I think Bylsma will be a good call. Guy knows one thing, and that is to manage egos of superstars. Olympic team is basically a collection of stars. I will have no problem with that. Maybe, he will revenge our loss to Canada with Golden Boy as the loser : ))

Yea, that hit wasn't a very good one from Lupul. He has been very dominant physically so far, but sometimes he did lose his cool and went over board, as seen in this hit, and some of the dumb penalties he has taken in the 2 games he has been back. Hopefully he tones it down a bit, and picks his spots better.

Kadri had another 3 pt night, this time tipping in 2 goals, and getting an assist. He has been playing against the oppositions top line the last two games I believe (Stamkos line/Hodgson line). It will be interesting to see how he manages against a very good 2-way line, like Bergeron's one.

Tyler Ennis and Hodgson both impressed me from Buffalo. They looked like star players out there with their skill, speed and hockey iq. If Grigorenko develops well, the Sabres will have a very solid 1-2-3 down the middle for the forseeable future.

Howard stole one from the Ducks as our guys continue to show their commitment play all sixty minutes of hockey and swept the weekend series in Southland. Even Franzen seems a little less lazy of late. Still lazy and not as productive as he needs to be, but at least he's having scattered moments of inspiration nowadays. He should still be traded for a solid defenseman.

We expected the Ducks to come after us after their humiliating loss and it was great to see our guys disrupt that plan with great success. They eventually settled into their heavy, physical game and created chances, but led by Howard, we were more than equal to the task. Great PK and Kindl made yet another positive impression. I feel we already have a winner in him alongside Ericsson as our AHLers go.

Three issues determined Boucher's fate in 2012-13
By Adam Kimelman - NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor

It was less than two years ago that the Tampa Bay Lightning were one bounce of the puck from advancing to the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.

Under the leadership of first-year coach Guy Boucher and his innovative 1-3-1 forechecking scheme, the Lightning totaled 103 points and pushed the eventual Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins to Game 7 in the Eastern Conference Finals. With rising superstar Steven Stamkos, as well as top-end veterans like Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis, the Lightning were viewed as a team on the rise with an incredibly bright future.

Less than two years later, the Lightning on Sunday fired Boucher with the team languishing in 14th place in the Eastern Conference heading into its game Sunday night at the Winnipeg Jets.

How did things go so wrong so fast for the Lightning? There are a few reasons:

Good article! Great to see our decisive former captain being just as decisive as GM. We'll bring him back home in the not too distant future as co-owner and GM InshAllah. Kenny will go if he fails to get the players we need this year before the playoffs.

Pens just traded for Douglas Murray. They're really going for it this year.

Douglas Murray is a good addition. In fact, he is the type of player they needed I think. He's not as good as he used to be, but he'll be a good option for #3-#5 dman.

This trade was in works for a few weeks. There were speculations about Murray landing here. IMO, he is the big crease clearing physical defensemen we were looking for along with Orpik. Shero did just that. He will be paired with Letang or Niskanen. Its a much needed move. One of the reason we lost to Philly last year was they crashed the crease at will without paying the price. Orpik was hobbling last year. Also, love the Brenden Morrow deal. He is the exact sandpaper forward we need. We don't need an additional sniper. We needed another Kunitz type ( straight line dirty area forward ). He brings leadership, grit and experience. Also, like that we pulled the trigger a week before deadline. It should give the players more time to adjust to new teammates and coaches. Had no idea Douglas Murray was a Swede ! Strange name. We are definitely trying to go for it this year. Thats all we can ask for. Shero stood pat last year. I think there is one more trade. Third/Fourth line player who kills penalties.

Oh yes, the streak goes on...12 now. Very impressive run. We are one point behind the Hawks in all of NHL. I would have never guessed it two weeks ago. This should give us the cushion for injured players to get healthy. Shero just said today we are not going to rush Malkin and Letang.

Detroit is playing very well now. Look out West.

Good win in Phoenix. Our guys are coming together as the AHL kids continue to step up. We looked like our usual puck possessing selves in large patches of the game. The PP was looking great until the nearly botched attempt to kill time by playing keep away towards the end. Gustavsson stopped a penalty shot but I feel our AHLer Mrazek to be the better backup going into the playoffs. The Gustavsson acquisition is beginning to look like yet another one of Kenny's wasteful F-ups. We're a wealthy team with plenty of cap space but that doesn't mean it's OK to waste money on guys not as good as what we have developing in the Griffins.

Franzen scored today, unusual, but was his usual lazy self. He finished less than 5% of his forechecks, 0% of his backchecks, failed to skate hard about 80% of the time, and abandoned his post in front of the net whenever threatened with a pounding. Oh how we miss Homer.

Now Alex Semin is getting $7 mil per year. Good talented player no doubt, but overpayment for sure. I guess that's the asking price for forwards these days. I wonder what Malkin's salary will be now. Its scary. We have Letang coming up too. I don't think we can afford both with new contracts with the asking rate. One of them will be moved. Just don't know who. But, that's for off season..

Ottawa rolls on. What a team they have.

Semin is one of those underachievers with HUGE potential. Maybe someone can inspire him to try harder to reach that potential, or die waiting for him to have a "breakout year". $7 mil is simply too much for a player like that unless you're breaking bread with our Kenny!

Baker's dozen for the Pens who just keep on rolling! I hope Fleury's injury's nothing too serious.

Some interesting stats about the Leafs:

1. Goalie stats:
Goalie|GP|GA|GAA|SA|PCT|SO
Ben Scrivens|18|41|2.59|500|.918|2
James Reimer|20|48|2.63|583|.918|1

2. PK % - 85.6 (4th in the league)

3. SA/G - 32.1 (26th in league)

4. Since returning from his injury, Lupul has at least a goal in every single game (5) he's played in.

A beastly game by Lupul. He literally carried the team on his back by scoring the game tying and game winning goals. Kessel stepped up tonight - he usually does after a Boston game  Team pulled out a big win after playing 5 in 7 nights, and clearly looking fatigued. We went 3-0-2 in those 5 games.

Good to see the team showing character and getting out of their slump, unlike last year. Huge game against the Canes coming up. If we win, they have basically no chance to catch us (will create 10 pt separation, with 3 games in hand for Canes).

And finally, what a run by the Pens! They're unstoppable right now.

The race for the President's Trophy's heating up. In our experience, it's better not to focus and exert on that too much and save the best intensity for the playoffs. Both Chicago and Pittsburgh are recent Cup winners and know this well, but it's still interesting to what they'll do and at what cost, if any, to their respective playoff runs.

Wings Need To Trade For Jerome Iginla
By Jeff Riger

Remember the days where the Red Wings could get whoever they wanted? It used to be great, Ken Holland would make a call and the next thing you know the Wings would have a new player whether he was a free agent or a trade deadline acquisition. Well I think it’s safe to say that those days are gone.

Last offseason when the Wings were in hot pursuit of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, Wings fans just expected both of them to be wearing a Winged Wheel. And, it made sense because for the better part of the last quarter century that’s all Wings fans knew. They get what they want and that’s that. Well Parise and Suter proved that Detroit is no longer, well, Detroit as both of them decided to go to the hockey hot bed in Minnesota, a team that had no tradition and had previously won absolutely nothing. Yes, Parise had family ties there, but those issues never seemed to matter before.

And, now we see it again as a possible fix for the Wings leaves them off his list of desirable destinations.

Or does he?

As the April 3rd trade deadline rolls around, Detroit is looking to make their team better and a true goal scorer could be just what the doctor ordered. Yes, Detroit could use a top four defenseman but I’m not sure one of those is out there so let’s focus on the scorer. Detroit needs a guy that could consistently net the Wings 30 to 40 a season, something that they have not had since Marian Hossa scored 41 goals for them back in 2009 and then left to win a cup in Chicago the following year. In fact, Detroit has struggled to light the lamp for quite some time now and a lack of goal scoring could be to blame for early playoff knockouts the last 3 seasons.

Jerome Iginla could be their man!

For as long as I can remember there have been rumors that the Flames would deal Iginla but now it actually seems like it will happen. Iginla is in the last year of his deal and there is no way the Flames want to resign the 35 year old captain who will be an unrestricted free agent as they are currently in a rebuild. They can’t afford him and he doesn’t want to be there anymore. So could he come to Detroit?

Maybe!

Initial reports state that Iginla gave the Flames 4 teams that he would be willing to go to and waive his no-trade clause in his contract. The Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and L.A. Kings are the lucky ones. However since that report, others have claimed that the Wings have been added to his list, and then some have taken that back and say Detroit is indeed not there. Bottom line I believe Iginla could help Detroit and help them make a long postseason run.

This season Iginla only has 9 goals in 30 games however before this year he has always been one of the better forwards in all the game. The last 11 seasons, not including this year, the lowest amount of goals Iginla has had has been 31 while the most has been 52.

I believe that Iginla still has a lot of good hockey left in him and that a change of scenery would do him wonders. Go get him!

Of course Calgary is not just going to give him away! Rumors swirling around on what it would take to land the star include draft picks, a top 4 defenseman and at least an everyday top two line forward plus prospects. The price is hefty but the payoff has a chance to be sensational. I’m not going to sit here and pretend to know who exactly from Detroit it would take to land Iginla, but I do know if he would come here then Detroit has enough pieces to make it work.

People constantly bring up the LA Kings and how they, as an 8th seed last year won it all. Well why can’t Detroit do the same thing? The Wings are playing their best hockey of the season. They have won their first 3 games of a 4 game West Coast road trip and they are a season high 6 games above .500. In fact the Wings have won 5 of their last 6 and have figured out their power play woes that troubled them pretty much all season long. Detroit has scored man advantage goals in 8 consecutive games including 5 in a row on the road. They are playing well and a bona fide scorer should make things that much better.

So what do you say? I think bringing Iginla here makes Detroit an automatic contender. What about you? The only question is if he would come.

You would probably have to part with one of Jarnkrok/Sheahan, Emerton and 1st 2013 to get it done. Seeing how they are rebuilding, I don't see why Calgary would want the other players you have mentioned. That seems pretty steep even for a UFA Iginla, but the Pens set the market price pretty high this year with the Morrow trade. Iginla is x2 the player Morrow is right now. Maybe you guys can do a Bouwmeester + Iginla package where the Flames hold back ~2M. Bouw is still a good #2/#3 dman, and exactly what Detroit needs. Those two would be a huge boost for a team on the rise.

Solid defensive win again. I just can't believe the way this team is playing defense. Goal scoring has gone down ( missing Malkin big time ), but we are also packing the house around our goalies. Habs possibly outplayed us for half a game. They are a very good team. Looks like Fleury may have gotten a concussion. Also, there are reports that Letang broke his toe. Not good news if its true. We always get injuries to big name players. sigh..such is life.

Sohel- Yes, we are all aware of the President's trophy curse. I don't think the team is focused on that at all, or surpassing the all time consecutive win record of 17 games. Even DB said that we are all focused on the next game. We have got some bounces here and there too. When we go on streak like that, luck plays a part, and we have gotten some bounces lately. And, LeafsPWN is spot on. Calgary will not accept any older players. They are in rebuild mode. They need high draft picks, young high end prospects and maybe a young roster player or two. Plus, as he mentioned, Pens set the price for Morrow. Iginla is three times the player than Morrow. I think it was done with Boston in mind. Now, Bruins have to give up more for say an Iginla to land him. I still say Boston are the fav to land him. They have the goalie prospect ( Subban ) that Calgary wants along with firt rd pick for Iginla. Even LA has Bernier to give. Detroit is not out of it, but I say Detroit-Pitt are way down the list for Iginla.

LeafPWN- TO is a playoff team this year. You have to go on a historical slump to miss now. I just don't see it. RC won't let it happen. Lupul is scoring every game it seems. But, I think TO should try to get a goalie. I think no.6 spot is good for TO. 'Peg will keep no.3 and that's a match up TO can win.

HUGE benefit for the Pens with absolutely no visible cost. I guess he really wants to win the Cup and thought the Pens to be his best bet. Despite crappy numbers this season, Iginla still has plenty left in the tank. A pure goal scorer with genuine two-way and leadership ability, can't get better than that. Looking forward to a Chicago-Pittsburgh SCF.

I hope this deal opens up the flood gates for trades now. Pens REALLY loaded up, and you've gotta think the other top Eastern teams will try to neutralize some of that.

Doesn't matter now, but CGY preferred deal was with BOS. The 2 teams agreed on components but w/o critical 3rd element - player approval.

Its still sinking in. I thought we were done with major trades. I was watching the Habs-Bruins last night ( and what a game it was ), and it was all but a foregone conclusion that Iggy was going to be a Bruin. Iggy was scratched. Bruins did the same to their prospects. But, I guess it all came down to players choice. When you have a NTC, you can do that. Morrow did the same. Bruins had a much better offer for him too. Its great to know that these guys want to come to Steel City. Pressure is on big time now. It was there already. But, we like it. We gave nothing for Iggy. The first rd and two prospects in Agostino and Hanowski ( both in college ) and none rated in top ten within the organization. Joe Morrow was rated no.4 and we gave him for Brenden Morrow. We did not have to give Depres, Bennet, Matta, Pouliot, Harrington etc for Iggy. Its a terrible deal for Calgary. Bruins offer was much much better than what we could have ever given. But again, player wants to come here, and keeping him off the Bruins roster is better for us. The whole TSN, NHLNetwork, Aron Ward got eggs on their face last night. You don't break news without being certain just to win the twitter kudos for being the first to report it.

We have more than 23 men on roster now. I expect a quick trade or two by deadline to ship some players away for draft picks. Don't be surprised if Tyler Kennedy/Dustin Jefferey and a player is given back to Calgary for nothing. After April 3 you can keep more than 23 on roster. Right now letang on IR gives us some flexibility. Somebody that don't have to clear waivers will be sent down to W-B/S. Its gonna be difficult for DB to fit in new players in lines. But, its a good problem. We have a month to figure it out. I would drop Morrow to third line with Sutter and Cooke.

Playing the Jets tonight. By far my second fav team in all of NHL. Love everything about 'Peg and what their fans bring to the table every night.

Kulemin looks to be back to his 15 goal, defensive stud self. Guy is playing with confidence again, using his size really well, and is one of the reasons why we have a top 5 PK this year. Always sold out. No big deal. He might not debut this Sat I am hearing. But, Iggy jersies are everywhere on store displays !

Your Leafs are good now. Stay at six. I was not impressed with the Jets last night. Maybe they had a off night. They basically stood and watched us skate in circle all night. Malkin coming back completely changed things. He is such a horse. Streak at 14 now ! It is kinds impressive. If you are winnning that many games in a row, you are doing something right. I don't recognize our commitment to defense. 9 goals given up in last 10 games is very un-Penguin like..

Chiarelli was whining yesterday about Iginla. Who arranges a press conf. to announce they didn't get a player? Too bad for you he chose us. He has the NTC. Get over it. I don't know about them anymore. This year has me soured on Bruins a lot. First their owner and his role in the lockout ( perhaps players dont want to play for you Jacobs ), then Juilen whining about Habs 'diving' while he has the biggest embellisher in all of hockey in Marchand, and now Chiarelli bitching about us and indicating that perhaps we had something to do with his Iginla's decision. DeKeyser, an unrestricted free agent out of Western Michigan, agreed to contract terms Friday and will join a defensive unit of the future that already includes promising rookies Brendan Smith and Brian Lashoff and well as prospects Xavier Ouellet and Ryan Sproul, who will both turn pro next season.

"That's one of the things that's exciting for us," said Jim Nill, the Red Wings assistant general manager. "We've got kind of a young corps that's growing up together. That's how you become a really good team.

"You go back over the years when there was (Nicklas) Lidstrom, (Sergei) Fedorov, (Steve) Yzerman, all these young kids coming together. That's how you build championship teams. We're excited about the opportunity of these guys coming together."

FINALLY some news we in the RWN can get TOTALLY psyched about! Detroit native Danny DeKeyser, a 23YO Western Michigan University defenseman has decided to sign with us. For those who haven't seen him play, he plays like Weber minus the super heavy shot. Don't get me wrong, his shot is plenty heavy though not quite Weber's class. Welcome to the Big Red Machine 5.0,Danny.

Yes I watch college, AHL, SEL and KHL hockey. I'm a total junkie.

"He's 6-foot-3, he's got great mobility, and he's got a very nice defensive presence," Nashville Predators assistant general manager Paul Fenton told The Tennessean on Thursday. "He uses his size, his reach, his mobility to fend guys off. He's a guy that's going to stop you defensively and he can make a first pass, so he's the kind of defenseman that we are attracted to here.- NHL.com

He's practicing with the team now and we all hope he can transition quickly and smoothly into the big time. Since 5 is scheduled to be retired next year and Junior has 55, we should give him 6 we reserved for Weber before he gave Kenny the finger. The future of our D looks nothing short of incredible with Smith (D with immense and I mean IMMENSE offensive potential), Kindl, Ericsson, Lashoff and now DeKeyser being led by Kronwall. To add to that, we have Xavier Ouellet coming and Ryan Sproul turning pro next year.

I think #87 will be ok. It was a vicious deflected slap shot from the point that hit him flush on the mouth. yikes...Obviously lost a lot of tooth. Pain must be intolerable. There are no reports of broken jaw or anything else at this point. But, you never know. I think he will be ok. Maybe they will sit him for a few games. Playoffs are almost assured. Injury bug is beginning to bite us again. Letang out still. Malkin back after a while. Now, Paul Martin is gone for over a month. Fleury still on shelf though Vokoun has done amazing.

15 is still a great feat. We are playing defense like I have never seen before. Something changed. Three shut outs in a row. We have given up nine goals in last eleven games. Thats a three games worth for earlier Pens teams.

Iginla is gonna be great here. Once he got it going in third, he was cycling the puck beautifully with Malkin.

Cooke is a good PK guy. He is good player when he is not being a knucklehead. To his credit, he has changed his game since the ultimatum given to him by the team and the league. Since that long suspension in the playoffs two years ago, he doesn't even have a major penalty.

Gotta claw back one shift at a time and only a sense of personal responsibility and EFFING PRIDE can make that happen. Someone has to lead and inspire everyone to show character. Can we show such championship intensity without Hank & Helm and with a group of AHLers?

Saad continues to impress. Love his speed, control over the puck in full stride, accuracy of his shots and passes, and the almost Forsberg-like balance under physical pressure. He's only 20 now and will go VERY far. Kane is having the season we all anticipated from him since day one and he'll sustain this success if healthy.

Great to see so many skilled, LaFontaine type American players like Kane, Saad, Van Riemsdyk and others nowadays. We still have typically American hustlers like Parise, Stastny and in the not too distant future Abdel Kader in the JR and Tkachuk mold, but the number of quality finesse players seems be increasing as are the number of exceptional American goalies. It won't be long before the USA starts winning gold. Weber, Crosby and Stamkos should be concerned.

Anyway, very sorry to hear about Crosby and I hope he returns soon. Sad to see him away from the ice when he has been on such a mission again. Second time an injury mitigated what could have been.

Too many finese players for my liking. I prefer the Dustin Brown/Joffrey Lupul/Milan Lucic types more than the Kessel's, JVR's and such. More entertaining to physical hockey, mixed with some nice playmaking and sniping.

The Sochi games are just a year away! If Crosby remains healthy, I think we'd be the favorites by a slight edge. Still the best skilled players in all 3 departments (Crosby, Price, Weber). The Americans are pretty close to us, given their mix of skill and grit, along with great goaltending (Quick, Howard, Milller). I would put the Swedes at #3, due to their defense and goaltending. They are still really good up front, but I like the Canadian, American and Russian offence a lot more. What do you guys think team USA roster is gonna look like?

My predcition for Canada would be this:

C - Crosby, Getzlaf, Toews, Bergeron
R - Stamkos, Perry, St. Louis, Giroux
L - Tavares, Nash, E Staal, Sharp
Extra - Lucic

D - Weber, Doughty, Keith, Seabrook, Subban, Pietrangelo/Letang
Extra - Pietrangelo/Letang

G - Price, Fleury, Luongo

Crosby has the worst luck, doesn't he? Yet another amazing season interrupted ( not ruined like last time thankfully ) by unfortunate incident. Its a broken jaw indeed. But, not the worst kind. Not wired shut. Still on liquid diet perhaps for two weeks. So strength will be compromised, which is his strong suit. Be back right around the playoffs. Personally its sucks for him because its the second time in his career his pursuit of Art Ross and Hart has been derailed. He was a lock two years ago. I think same goes this year.

Geno steps up when Sid goes out. I have a feeling this streak is beginning to be a burden a bit. I have noticed it from players post game. Its time to lose a game or two. I mean, the only team that remains in front of us is '92 Pens. So, its in house, so to speak. Injuries are piling up too at the worst time.

I don't know if Martin St.Louis makes the squad. Its a pretty good squad though. I think the Canadian team you proposed will be pretty much the team as they go forward. I would in fact like a few of those Blues players like Backus, Oshie or one of the Avs young studs instead of St.Louis. Its a new team. I think Yzerman will do away with the older members from the 2010 team. P.K Subban is a must. He amazes me. He is such a special talent. If possible the fourth line ( if there is such a thing ) should be made of tough gritty players instead of likes of Sharp or St,Louis. Anyway, US will give Canada a run for their money. Canada will be the overwhelming favorite.

I will never understand why hockey players don't wear cages/full face helmets. I get that there is a "macho" aspect to it, to go with tradition, but its past the point of stupid now. You're seeing people lose out on money, and teams losing out on star players due to a lot of facial injuries (Marc Staal, Crosby). The NHL needs to get its **** together and start addressing problems from the root levels. Get the players to wear full face masks, and allow the fighters to remove their helmets/cage during a fight. This way easily preventable injuries can stop taking out our star players for extending periods of time.

I think MSL will make it to play with Stammer. Him and Stamkos are the dynamic duo of the NHL. I think Yzerman will try to keep that intact. As far as young players go, I think he might take a young guy like Piet and maybe Eberle as the extra's just to give them the olympic experience. They could get a game or two against the weaker opponents.

I agree with using someone like Backers/Oshie as a 4th line guy. They're all really good all-round players, and can be used in any role basically. We could take out one of the centers (Getzlaf probably) to make room. A 4th line of Whoever - Bergeron - Backes would be an amazing two-way line, capable of shutting down pretty much any line on a good day.

Kipper to Leafs picking up some major steam:

The Calgary Flames have granted the Toronto Maple Leafs permission to talk to goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff's representatives.

Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis has been vocal about his interest in adding a veteran goaltender to play alongside James Reimer and Kiprusoff's name has been front and centre. According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Leafs have discussed a contract extension with Kiprusoff's agent.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=419626

Nonis has been vocal about his search for a veteran goalie (with playoff experience) on a shortish term deal (~ 3 years) to mentor Reimer. Can't get any better than Kiprussof in that regards. He might have **** numbers this year, but we need to realize that's behind the worst defense in the NHL. With us, I see his numbers jumping up to the .910 -.915 range, which is perfectly fine for a backup/1B goalie.

Bouwmeester went a little cheaper than I expected. I thought it would take 1st + B Prospect or 1st + 2nd to get him. He's overpaid by about 1.5 M, but he's a very good defenceman. A solid #2 I'd say. I'm not getting why Feaster is pulling the trigger on marginal deals so far ahead of the deadline. At this price, I've got to wonder why Detroit didn't do more to get him. He is the type of guy they need.

I'm very surprised by the activity this year. Lots of big trades leading up to the deadline. It's been pretty exciting!

Looks like Randy Carlyle has joined the new hater club that obsesses over Crosby and anything Pens. Bravo ! Do not want to disparage any franchise, which is not I am all about, but one wonders why he is not pissed at the hockey Gods for not being so kind for 40+ years towards his own club. I am sure, if asked, Bylsma would have a different answer if someone asked him about Lupul getting hurt by his own teammates shot. Anyway, what's another new hater among many ? eh? life goes on for us..

It's CHRISTMAS MORNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol I'm overly excited for today's TDD. Brought my charger with me to work. Will be tuned in to TSN radio all day.

I know there won't be much movement, but this is the first time in years the Leafs are in the position of a buyer. I wanna see if anything comes out of it. As long as we don't get Luongo and his albatross, I'll be fine.

I think the Pens still want a 4th line C to add. One of the TSN guys said it recently. Boyd Gordon seems like good fit for that. We'll see if anything comes out of it.

Personally, my ideal deadline would be acquiring a guy like Morris/Robidas and Kipper, and dealing Clarke Mac for a late 1st/early 2nd.

Mercifully the streak has ended with a thud. It was a terrible effort by everyone. Looked lost without Crosby last night. Vokoun came back to earth. I think we will lose again tonight. I could see it coming. Sadly, Kuntiz and Dupuis looked like third line to border line second line player last night with Kennedy centering ..Lol. Last night alone should validate Crosby's MVP candidacy. At least Iginla got his first goal.

Yes, it is like Christmas, except my Pens have done early shopping. Still, gotta keep an eye on a fourth line player coming in, if any.

Do you have a link for the TSN radio online? Maybe I can listen here and there. I think Leafs will land Kiprusoff. Jagr has become a rental nowadays. What a way to tarnish your legacy ! http://www.tsn.ca/TradeCentre/TradeTracker2013/ look on the top right hand side.

It's the opposite for me - scared by the Bruins, but not the Habs. We've owned them 2/3 times mostly due to our combination of speed and size. When we skate, we really are a tough team to beat, and that's what happened with the MTL games, aside from the last one. If you use your speed, and at the same time have some big grinders, you can take down MTL. They fold when you use the body on them while keeping up.

The Bruins have a hard time against them because of their lack of speed.

TSN guys reporting that Kulikov and Golgoski are getting a lot of attention. Doesn't mean they'll be moved, but those two teams are in seller mode now. I'd love to land Kulikov here to play with Phaneuf. Price will probably be Gardiner + though.

Thanks for the link bud. Working fine..

So, Kiprussof to Leafs a no go. Looks like he will play out the season and retire ! well then..

We have a strategy against Bruins that we have been deploying a lot. Every time Chara is on the ice, we soft dump it in his corner ( all four lines will do it ), chase him down, and hit him every time. Even Crosby line doesn't carry the puck against him. Somebody dumps it and make a beeline for him. If you keep on hitting him, he is prone to turnover and his bigger body takes longer to recover. He also losses his cool and prone to taking penalties. Zone time is almost critical against them. If they establish zone time in your end, you are in trouble, because they are the best when it comes to generating shot from the point. They are good at deflections, and finding the rebounds with chaos ensuing in front of your goalie. We believe that we are good enough on offense that we can still produce one more goal than them by playing this ultra defensive tactic. It has worked in last two years, though it doesn't mean that will work all the time. All it does is gives you a better opportunity. They are a fine balanced team. No doubt about that.

Beamer
April 3, 2013, 10:48 AM
Problem with Habs- We don't think they are physical enough, as you pointed out, so we do too much instead of playing the simple game that we play vs Boston. When you do that, turnovers are inevitable, and habs with that speed come back with odd man rushes. They love passing east to west in front of the goalie that usually generate glorious scoring chances.

The other day I heard him give an interview, and he could barely finish a coherent sentence together. Great player, but I have serious doubt about his GM'ship.

Rangers are morons. They can't score but give away their best potential scorer for more grinders. Torts is a fool and his system/manners will tune out everyone eventually.

From the Malik Report (http://kuklaskorner.com/tmr/comments/red-wings-trade-deadline-report-were-trying-to-rebuild-reload-and-were-goin):

Ken Holland owns more Stanley Cup rings that any other current NHL general manager. Yet today, many among the most spoiled fan base in hockey believe him to be a fool. In truth, he’s simply not a man interested in fool’s gold.

“Would I have liked to do a deal? Yeah, I would have liked to do a deal,” Holland said as the NHL trade deadline concluded without Detroit dealing. “We made offers on two or three players. We would have liked to have put an extra top six forward or an extra top four defenceman into our lineup. When you look at what transpired, you can figure out who we would have had some interest in, but at the end of the day, we didn’t get it done for a whole host of reasons.”

“When you really analyze those trades and put it to Detroit, you’ve got to look at your moment in time and find out if the trade fits, do you have the assets, is it worth it?” Holland explained.

Back when the Wings didn’t think twice about shipping a prospect or a first-round pick away, it was because players such as Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom were in the prime of their careers. Holland doesn’t have that luxury now. Pavel Datsyuk is 35 and hinting he might return to Russia in 20o14 when his contract expires. Captain Henrik Zetterberg is 33.

Last season, Holland knew Lidstrom was going and Brad Stuart was gone after the season, so he spent a first rounder on Kyle Quincey to bolster what was about to become a thin blue-line. Holland doesn’t want to become a Colorado or Edmonton, once-mighty franchises that sunk to the bottom of the standings. He recognizes that Detroit fans wouldn’t stand for that.

“We’re trying to compete, we’re trying to rebuild, reload, whatever you want to talk about it,” Holland said, seemingly speaking directly to the fans. "You look at the moment in time. I can’t look at the moment in time. I have to look at what we’ve got and where I think we can go over the next few years.”

Five regulars – Zetterberg, Quincey, Todd Bertuzzi, Darren Helm and Mikael Samuelsson – were out of the lineup Monday when Detroit beat Colorado.

“If we can get those five guys in the lineup in two weeks, I couldn’t do any better moves than getting those five guys back,” Holland said. “And if they don’t come back, it probably doesn’t matter what moves you make.”

Holland could have sold the farm in pursuit of the elusive dream, and in a few years’ time when Detroit was a bottom feeder, the same people calling for his head today for not making a deal would be calling for his head due to the deals that he’d done.

As Mike Babcock likes to say, "That's the facts."

It doesn't mean that you have to like what the Wings didn't do--you can despise the team's lack of moves, that's fine, there are no points off your Red Wings fandom for faith with doubts or the belief that blind faith is a dangerous thing.

You don't have to agree with or like the Wings' coaches or management to love your team. Dissent is part of the bargain, and Babcock and the coaches and Holland and the management--remember, we're talking about a team consisting of Holland, Jim Nill, Ryan Martin, Kris Draper, Mark Howe, Kirk Maltby and the pro scouts, Joe McDonnell, Hakan Andersson and the amateur scouts, Jiri Fischer, Chris Chelios, Chris Osgood, Jim Bedard, Babcock, Bill Peters, Tom Renney and Keith McKittrick, and on the ownership front, input from Jimmy Devellano, Chris Ilitch and Mr. I himself--all have jobs whose descriptions involve accepting that you might be pissed off at their off-ice and on-ice decisions.

So, as Holland told DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose, "We're going to go with the kids":

Are you surprised to still be in the playoff hunt despite the number of injuries this season?

“I’m not like all the media is. I think our players are better than what people give them credit for. I think that our goaltending has been real good. We had a bad outing against Chicago, but up until then we were eighth in the league in goals against. I think now we’re 10th or 11th. Anytime you’re in the top third of the league when we’ve got a lot of kids on defense and a lot of injuries up front. But we’ve got some good stories up front.

“Hopefully we get some of our injured players back. In the meantime, there’s been real opportunity for our kids and I think they’ve done a good job.

“Tomas Tatar was only really sent down because we wanted to give Gustav Nyquist a chance. He had seven points in 18 games. You start putting that over 80 games and you get 30-35 points. The best rookies don’t do a whole lot more than 30-35 points. Gustav Nyquist has led the American League in scoring. We could go out and acquire some veterans, but these kids need to play. They are the elite players in the American Hockey League.”

Are you worried about what other teams did?

“Not at all. You have to look over the last 10 years at what teams have got. The age of their best players. The position they are (in) for the next five or six years. We’re trying to compete, we’re trying to rebuild, reload, whatever you want to talk about it. You look at the moment in time. I can’t look at the moment in time. I have to look at what we’ve got and where I think we can go over the next few years. The age of the rosters? Who’s going to be here for a while? And at the end of the day, we think, we hope. … We played the other day and there wasn’t (Henrik) Zetterberg, there wasn’t (Mikael) Samuelsson, there wasn’t (Todd) Bertuzzi, there wasn’t (Darren) Helm, there wasn’t (Kyle) Quincey. If we can get those five guys in the lineup in two weeks, I couldn’t do any better moves than getting those five guys back in the lineup. And if they don’t come back, it probably doesn’t matter what moves you make. You need your players. We think they’re going to come back. I think that, Mike Babcock thinks that. We’re happy with Jakub Kindl, we’re happy with Brian Lashoff, we’re happy with Brendan Smith. We’re happy with the way the kids have played. We don’t want to trade them away.”

Is it tougher to find a fit with all of the parity in the league?

“I don’t know about that. There were 8-9 trades today. There was 15-17 over the last few days. There were four or five big ones, but you have to really analyze them. When you really analyze those trades and you put it to Detroit, we were making those trades six or seven years ago. Other teams weren’t making those trades. You’ve got to look at your moment in time and find out if the trade fits, do you have the assets, is it worth it? We’re trying to compete. We’re on the bubble. Would I have liked to do a deal? Yeah, I would have liked to do a deal. We made some offers, but again we weren’t looking for anything for depth. We don’t need depth defensemen. I traded Kent Huskins away. We don’t need any depth forwards. We would have liked to have put an extra top six forward and an extra top four defenseman. When you look at what transpired, you can figure out who we would have had some interest in, but at the end of the day, we didn’t get it done for a whole host of reasons.”

Can you talk about the state of the Western Conference and how two teams really have separated themselves?

“The regular-season means nothing to me. If the regular-season meant anything, we would have beaten Edmonton in 2006. I think we were 30-35 points ahead of Edmonton in 2006 with 126 points. We were the first seed, Edmonton was the eighth seed, they got a hot goalie and they knocked us out. I’ve watched both ends of the spectrum. I think the regular-season, it’s meaningful in the sense that you need to be in the top eight. But I think when the playoffs start on the first of May, I think you can throw all the statistics out in the garbage. That’s what history says since 2005. I look at it today, we’re three points out of opening at home and we’re four points out of not being part of the tournament. We’re right in the middle. We’ve got 12 games to go, seven on the road. We’ve got to win some hockey games.”

After seeing what Minnesota got for Pomminville, it's totally understandle why Holland/Nonis stayed pat. This was a sellers market on deadline day. When Martin freaking Erat gets a prospect like Forsberg in return, you know young teams on the rise, or teams in transition will not get what they want at a reasonable price range.

Detroit will probably just sit tight and let their young players all come up and make an impact before doing something significant - similar to what the Leafs have been doing post Kessel trade. They'll make the playoffs really soon though, unlike us, due to their strong foundation already in place. We might see some offseason deals from Leafs and Detroit to address their blueline issues.

Darcy Regier's obscene asking price tacting seems to be working for the past couple years. He got Hodgson out of Kassian, a 1st out of Gaustad, 2nd out of Leopold, and a pot of gold out of Pomminville. He is the right guy, at the right time for Buffalo. Within the next 3-5 years, that franchise will be booming with talent if they play their cards right. The scariest part of this is the fact that he hasn't even dealt his two most prized players - Miller and Vanek. Miller already wants out, so he should be gone around the draft. Vanek, I'm not too sure. If he wants to stay, I think Regier might just hold on. Need some good players to play with young studs like Hodgson and Ennis.

I think the Gaborik deal was really good for all 3 sides involved. Gaborik checked out of NYR this year, and needed a change of scenery. When he's focused, he is one of the most dangerous players in the league. I think he'll get back to being ~30 g, 60 pt guy - giving them similar numbers as Nash. Cbus is a good young team who play exciting hockey. This move is sure to give them, and their fans a shot in the arms. This team is finally in good hands with John Davidson at the helm.

Game against Beamer bhai's favourite team tonight. We must maintain a perfect record against them!

Great read Sohel. I think Detroit did it right. Its not the time to deal away draft picks for them. Also, good pts by leafs PWN about Sabres and the overall trade deadline scenario this year.

We had another dog performance last night. I am willing to give them the benefit of doubt since they won fifteen in row earlier, but I sense some things that I didn't like last night and the night before to Buffalo. No.1 - Those fifteen wins were with Crosby and you just can't replace him as we are doing now. No.2 Malkin's game is no way near what it was last year and he has basically done way below his standards this year, and nothing to write about in last two games minus Crosby. No. 3 I think we have become a slower time with the addition of Iginla, Morrow ( I don't know what he does out there ) and Murray to a certain degree. No. 4 The new players were not part of the streak and the team chemistry is lacking a bit now.

All correctable, minus the speed aspect ( which I do not like ), and lots of practice time needed with correct line combination.

Good luck with Philly. Beat them, will you ? I am actually travelling to Philly this evening. NYC in the morning.

After a hard fought win in Ottawa, it looked like the team had a sense of entitlement for the first time this year. We usually play **** for about 5-10 mins every game, but last night they took it to a new level during the 2nd. We came close to tying it up in the 3rd (3 posts before the Flyers scored the EN) after we finally woke up, but fortune didn't favor us. We need to get desperate now to lock a playoff spot. We play NYR and NJ 4 times in the next 10 games - two teams right below us in the standings.

Perhaps the biggest loss in this game was Lupul's cheapshot by the Flyers goons. He might have a concussion, meaning season over. No final word yet. It seemed to me like the Flyers are playing even more dirty now then they were before. Rats like Simmonds, Hartnell and Rinaldo run around taking shots at players without getting called. Of course, they run away when a heavyweight like Orr tries to make them accountable. Hope they get crushed in the playoffs if they make it.

Niemi deserves a lot of credit for the resurgence. The guy is genuinly playing well this year. He's been better this year than the year he won the cup with Chicago.

It looks like the Leafs will face the Bruins this year. I can't the Habs losing the division lead. They are playing too well for that right now. Shows what a good, mobile d and excellent goalie can do for you, even if your forwards aren't all that great. Having Subban and Markov as your top two guys is pretty awesome. That's probably the best top 2 after Keith and Seabrook.

Back after a few days off !! What did I miss? Looks like caps and Ovi are firing. No.3 is for them to lose. We have clinched a playoff spot and its between no.1 or 2 for us. Injuries to key players has been our story for the last four years. That is the case once again. Martin and Letang remain out. He always leaves his feet when he hits, and of course, he is the first to run away when challenged. Hartnell will answer the bell from time to time, but not him. Saw them choking against 'Peg over the weekend.

Canes and Devils are on a free fall. Most surprising number to me is Jordan Staal being -16 this year! I never imagined that in a thousand years.

Gotta finish strong starting tomorrow and head into the playoffs with a bit of momentum. Looks like Babcock is making a few offensive adjustments. Hometown boy Danny DeKeyser has made an immediate difference defensively MashAllah.

Wings seek more offense, shuffle lines

DETROIT – With three days off before the next game, coach Mike Babcock hopes to stimulate the Red Wings’ offense, shuffling the forward lines during practice on Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena.

“We need to generate (offense), we don’t want to give up anymore chances against and we want to be solid defensively and continue that way,” Babcock said. “But we’d like to generate more offense.”

With nine games left, the Red Wings are very much in the hunt for one of the final Western Conference playoff berths. However, so are nine other teams currently vying for spots four through eight. But the Wings’ offense has flat-lined over the last five home games causing some concern as they’ve produced just three-points in the standings while being outscored 17-8 in those games.

By moving Valtteri Filppula off the wing to third-line center between forwards Damien Brunner and Daniel Cleary – the trio has accounted for six goals in the last 10 games – Babcock hopes to spread more scoring chances through his four lines.

The move comes days after Babcock re-united Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg on the top forward line with Justin Abdelkader, and switched Johan Franzen to second-line center, where he remained in Tuesday’s practice along with wingers Drew Miller and Gustav Nyquist.

“By doing this we can generate more offense,” Babcock said. “We feel Fil, Brunns, Clears that’s a pretty good line. Fil’s been a good centerman for us. We like what Mule’s been doing here and we’re just going to spread our lineup out and go a little bit deeper.”

It'll be good to have all 3 of our teams in the playoffs :D Even better if they face each other. Not gonna hold my breath though. Anything past the first round will be a bonus for Leaf fans this year. Although I must say, if we skate hard every game, I like our chances against the Bruins or Habs. Habs are a great team, but we matchup well against them.

Caught a good chunk of the Habs/Caps game last night. It was a fast, exciting game with some really good skill on display. From Montreal's perspective, its easy to see the difference in skill between their defencemen and the forwards. Their mediocre forwards are helped a great deal by Markov and Subban, who basically act as 4th forwards in the offensive zone.

It's the otherway around for Washington - their skill is in display during the rush, especially when Ovy and Backstrom are on. Ovechkin was doing a great job of maintaining puck possesion last night. On one of those plays, he was able to beat Price (from around the blue line) by making him move laterally through a screen. There seems to be an extra jump in his step these days. Hope he can keep this up. I miss the Ovy vs Crosby rivalries that used to exist before.

I was able to catch some of the Hawks/Wild game as well. The Hawks are just in a different league compared to the rest of the teams now. Their ability to make plays off the rush, crash the net, and their tenacious pressure when not in possesion of the puck make them dangerous no matter where they are on the ice. When they are on, it seems like every pass they make is tape to tape. Last night the Wild were doing their boring old crap, and collapsing down low every time the Hawks entered the zone. In response to this, the Hawks dumped it into the corner, sent thier fast forward after the puck and crashed the net HARD. That generated some really good chances for the entire 1st peroid. A little sharper shooting would have seen them get a 2-0 lead early on. And as Minnesota is, they were playing to avoid mistakes in the offensive zone. Always sending in 2 forwards deep and keeping the dmen high. Don't think I saw a single pinch out of their dman the few times they established zone time. Not gonna beat good teams often playing like that.

The Wild are the classic defensive team who clog 2/3 of the ice, and hope to score a couple from the few chances they get. Pretty pathetic given the quality of players they have. They are having success - but honestly, I wouldn't pay to watch a team like that even if they were winning.

Yea, it was great to have Ovi -Sid rivalry. I hope it comes back again. Sid was hurt for two years and Ovi sucked those two years. Its good for the game and the league. You know what? Ovi has put himself in the Hart consideration now. He has pulled his team up by his play. Granted, it is by far the worst division in hockey, and 44 pts giving you a no.3 seed is a shame. But, it is what it is.

Spot on about Habs and Caps contrasting style.

Hawks are just magical at times. They cycle the puck better than anyone I have seen. Now, they are getting Sharp and Hossa back. A Hawks vs Redwings in first rd will be superb and I am sure Hawks would like to avoid that.

Saw a video of Crosby the other day. Guy looks like a ghost. Lost so much weight ! Funny his face doesn't look much different. They did a great job with surgery. I think getting his weight and strength back is the major issue. You can only do that when you start eating solids. Based on that, I don't see him coming back before playoffs. Worst thing that can happen to us is fall to no.2.

Watching Philta lose again made my night. They are done done done..

Yes, all three of our teams are on course for playoffs. It has also been a good year for Canadian teams. Edmonton is still in contention, though the chances are slim. Only Calgary is completely out. I want Jets to make it so bad. Love everything about that city..

Leafs picked up a point and all but safe for playoffs. Devils are fading big time like the Sens. But, I think Sens are safe. Did you guys see the Volchenkov elbow on Marchand? Nasty. I think its suspension worthy, but Del Zotto got away with Neal elbow to the head. Never know these days..

The clowns that are Bruins fanbase were celebrating Crosby broken jaw two weeks ago. Calling it karma! Also, they were wishing ill health on Iggy after he decided to not go there. Now, they got Bergeron and Marchand out to concussion. Of course , they were happy to see Emelin out too. I have visited their forums quite a bit in last month or so, and I must say that they are as bad as Flyers. But, get well Bergeron and Marchand...

Red Wings going to lock up Howard with a six yr extension. Good move. He is a solid solid franchise goalie.

This Truncated season feel too short ... Haven't paid much attention and now theres only 9 games left.

It is what it is, Hopefully we can avoid the 8 seed, get the 6 seed play the Caps and than take it from there.

Important win against the Preds tonight. The three-way battle for the 8th spot is pretty intense as all of us in the RWN find ourselves in uncharted waters after making the playoffs for 21 consecutive years. The Sharks are number two on that list with 8.

I hope Franzen has a one of his better playoff years this year and Filppula and Brunner find their groove going into them.
