Did you know that the USA had a fast bowler who averaged 15.66 in 65 First-Class matches? well they did, his name was Bart King. the name king is a suitable one when you realise he got 38 5 wicket hauls in 65 FC matches at an average of 15.66 and a total of 415 wickets. wasn't too shabby with the bat either with an average of 20.51 with 1 century and 8 half centuries.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/25637.html

Bart King was by a wide margin the greatest cricketer that the US has ever produced, as well as being a great character. His reputation outside America was largely made by his three tours of England with The Philadelphians (who before World War 1 played cricket to a high standard) in 1897, 1903 and 1908. His figures in first-class matches on those tours were:

Runs Avge Wkts Avge
1897 441 20.10 72 24.20
1903 653 28.89 93 14.91
1908 290 16.11 87 11.01

Though by 1908 he was 35 years old, his bowling average was the lowest of the English season. His 87 wickets were taken in just 10 matches. He bowled very fast in his early days, and developed the ability to swing the ball late from leg. Judges such as Pelham Warner, C.B.Fry and H.V.Horden ranked him amongst the great bowlers.

In all first-class matches he scored 2134 runs at 20.52, with 1 century, and took 415 wickets at 15.67.

Why are you picking on his batting when bowling was clearly his main role?

The quality of opposition couldn't have been as bad as the Abuls and Rajibs - FC cricket in England back in those days would have had some of the best players in the world at the time. If you had gone to his Cricinfo profile and clicked on the only article that the site has on him, you'd know how good he was:

Bart King 10 for 53, Philadelphia v Ireland, 1909
The only American among the 79. King is generally regarded as the greatest of the pre-war cricketers in the USA and he undertook three successful tours of England. With cricket in Philadelphia before the Great War accorded first-class status, a number of overseas sides toured there and in 1909 he opened a two-match series against Ireland with a ten-for. In Ireland's four innings he took 25 for 151. In 1912 he was still good enough to take 12 wickets in a drawn two-match series against the full Australian side. http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/303624.html

See the part in bold. That line up would have had some of the best batsmen in the world at the time.

And if Pelham Warner though he was one of the best, it's highly likely that's what he was.

To be honest live coverage of T20 WC was a masterclass decision. I know 90% of the people are SC people but the remaining 10% are from the US.This way we can get USA to take even the slightest of interest in this sport. Imagine cricket being among the top 15 sports over there, that will still be good.

To make a sport popular its got to be on tv. Thats they first and last way you can spread the game around the world. Why did people in BD start to watch cricket? because cricket matches were shown on tv or aired by the radio, why is tennis popular around the world? because the sport is broadcasted by many channels. Why youths around us follow EPL so closely? they can easily watch it from their TV for low cost.

^ I guess you can tweet @ESPN.

I'm sure most of you know this already. But I know many who don't. Just so everyone is aware of it, they aren't just broadcasting this tourney. ESPN is in a deal with ICC through WC15. So they'll broadcast every ICC events till then (if nothing goes wrong). So the best thing for us would be to watch, re-watch, comment, like, share, tweet, w/e the **** else we can do to let them know that they've got enough views. So they extend their deal. Cricket scores has been on the ESPN scroller and on the main page, it made it through to top 10 plays 4-5 times last week. That's little but BIG. And I read they will show the final on ESPN2!

Now it's up to us, the cricket fans to use this chance and push forward from here on. It does sound a bit lame, and why should we have to do all that just because ESPN finally realized about cricket and it's popularity, but we should for our own good...

I just checked ESPN3 schedule for the 2nd week of October. ESPN3 will also cover the Champions League. We can watch Shakib play and not have to worry about Chorai link. ESPN3 is def interested in going after more cricket tournaments. I think next they will probably aim for IPL, but that might be hard to get since youtube already has some kind of deal going on with BCCI. I really hope the winner of next season of BPL will participate in next year's champions league, that way we'll have an entire team to follow and not just 1 player.

I wonder if Youtube's interest in broadcasting IPL and SLPL live had anything to do with ESPN showing so much interest in broadcasting cricket.

In my book the success will depend on the league's uniqueness. Starting with the name. If it's a USAPL, then fuzz it, don't even bother. Also I hate the fact how everyone keep saying "Oh US is starting a IPL-style thingi." WTF is a IPL-style thing? IPL invent franchise system? No! While other cricket countries may have to follow the IPL footstep, America doesn't. It's already thousands year ahead when it comes to these things.

And then I read a lot mention on Bollywood on that link. Why? This is Merica. Not India. We have Hollywood. Why do we have to relate to some 4th class crap? Infect, why do we even have to get involved with Hollywood? Once again, stop following IPL's footstep. This is AMERICA.

^ due to the Indian corporations investing? And they are obviously targeting the Indians & Pakistanis with the whole Bollywood thing and the locals with the Hollywood. Ajfar
October 10, 2012, 06:28 PM
The reason this Bollywood crap is being dragged on is because they are obviously going after the Indian crowd in America. They can't expect proper Americans to start following a game that they know nothing about. So first they have to figure out how can they make this tournament successful enough that at least 'Brown' people will follow it. If it crashes in the first try than investors will back out right away. It's going to take a lot of time before this even comes close to being successful. Look at MLS it stated before 2000, and now after 10+ years finally people are slowly starting to pay a little more attention now.

Tiger444
October 10, 2012, 06:45 PM
Honestly speaking, I just don't see cricket being big in the US amongst the Americans. Football, basketball, and baseball are big sports here and i dont see that changing ever. There is just so much history in those sports. Forget about local Americans, even a lot of the 1st generation Indian/Pakistanis/Bangladeshis/West Indians, don't pay attention to cricket. A lot of the 1st generation West Indians rather play basketball or American football. So forget about local Americans, they should focus on the expats and the 1st generations. There's still a big population of subcontinental people here so they could still make good amount of money running a US cricket league.

Ajfar
October 10, 2012, 06:49 PM
Well if there is a legue going on in America that might give them a reason to watch. Right now people don't watch because they have no connection with any of these teams, and not to mention the weird timing of the games. I have a lot of American friends who said if they knew all the rules and how the game is played they would love to watch it. I think Americans will be fascinated by guys like Gayle, Watson, Pollard's hitting abilities.

Tiger444
October 10, 2012, 07:10 PM
Ya my friends said the same thing actually. The good thing about Americans is that they're very open to different cultures and customs. So they might show interest but it'll take a while. Having a cricket league is definitely a good start. The thing about Americans is that they like action packed sports like football and basketball. Baseball is popular because its America's past time and the home runs. T20s are the way to go for sure. ODIs and Tests would not survive here.

I hope you're right but I highly doubt it. If it worked liked that the World Series would have higher ratings since it's suppose to be America's "pastime". Only 14 mil watched the last WS. Heck only 1/3 of the country watch the Super Bowl. By that account, I'd happy if WC final cracks 1 mil. But I don't think it'd be as high as 2-3mil. If it does, ESPN will go nuts.

After learning that the 10 most highly viewed Internet streams on its Internet-only network ESPN3, were of cricket matches, regularly beating out college football and basketball, executives considered putting it on TV. On March 30, 100,000 viewers tuned into the ESPN3 stream of an India-Australia match at one time, which is more than an average audience, the network said.

While it might take some educating to make U.S. viewers more familiar with wickets and hitting a sixer, ESPN said the average U.S. cricket fan is young, highly educated and has a median household income of $75,000, which should appeal to advertisers.

(...)

ESPN has been trying to woo Madison Avenue by hosting events such as a viewing party for the India-Pakistan match at Hearst Tower in Manhattan attended by ESPN president John Skipper. But it still faces an uphill battle with advertisers like Hyundai, which said it has to do more research before investing.

Source (http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBREA331UU20140404?irpc=932)

You know it's on, when they start doing research and generalizing the audiences. This means business. Hopefully millions tune in this Sunday.

As unhappy as I'm about WI not making it, US missing out on watching Gayleshow and yet another SL-IND match-up, I hope it's a close, nail-bitting, intense game.

^ At this point Kholi show > Gayle show. Gayle had a really disappointing tournament for his standard. If he clicked against SL, they would have been in final for sure.

I converted one of my colleague into a cricket fan. He is a huge baseball fan,so he was curious to learn the rules and how the game is played. It also helped that some of the games were on ESPN streak for the cash contest. He followed both of the semifinals with me on cricinfo and understood everything. He told me he will watch the final on ESPN 2 tomorrow. So 1 down, millions more to go.

Gayle is no Gayle anymore. He seems think like Mushy now days! The way he played against Bangladesh, he did the same against the mighty Lankan bowling which was a Ashfool thing to do IMO.

You can come back strongly against a weak bowling attack, but it's not easy against a bowling attack like the Lankans. You have to have control over bowlers, otherwise they will get on you...you play few dot balls...then go for big shot...then the likes of Dilshan catch you...

I just think the new viewers would've enjoyed watching the explosive Caribbean team more than bunch of slow and short dudes of the subcon.

Haven't really seen any ads or anything on ESPN or Cricinfo. Hopefully they at least mention on SportsCenter tonight

What a boring game. I was hoping for at least 170-180 run chase. If Kholi got more strike they would have scored 160 for sure.
