An important home test series against West Indies is coming up and most of us are facing the same dilemma 'Who should partner Tamim in tests?'. Most of you guys would have selected Mominul and Naeem in your own XI but the opening batsmen is yet to be decided. Who should it be? Many people to choose from.

Many ppl to chose from? really? who are they? I only see Nazimuddin(based on his last test series) and Anamul, if BCB r so desperate.

At this stage anamul or nazimuddin imo, but we should see how they fair in the domestic matches up until the squad us to be decided.

Just got a list of 10 people

Shahriar Nafees: Based on what?
Junaid Siddique: Can't hold the bat anymore
Jahurul Islam: Lost whatever he had
Soumya Sarkar: Way too inconsistant, plus, just played 5/6 FC.
Imrul Kayes: Do you want him?
Mominul Haque: Not a opener
Naeem Islam: Not a opener
Mohamad Ashraful: I'll leave it to you ;)

i think we could give Nafees a go if he makes a good string of scores in the next couple of FC matches.

Naeem Islam: Not a opener

He can open, similar to Ashraful in the sense that he could bat anywhere in the order. Naeem could open.

The people are a list of possible contenders. Junaid/Jahurul have played test and are always going to be in the fringes of the national team.

off the top of my head nazimuddin, anamul, shamsur, SN, jahurul, junaid, SS. tell me if i'm missing anyone. but so far out of those jahurul and junaid didn't perform this round and haven't really done much to warrant selection over the last couple of years, SS got a quick fire 96 and has an ok FC record but no centuries to his name, not quite consistent enough, SN has been tried and tried again, shamsur is becoming more consistent but has never been given a chance but hasn't set the world on fire just been decent, anamul didn't perform but has been the best FC performer over the last couple of years, nazimuddin played the last test series.

i think it really comes down to nazimuddin or anamul, SN a slight chance. the others haven't shown enough over the last couple of years to be selected.

imrul is just a horrible FC player atm so not even in contention, ash is basically the same as imrul nowadays.

yeah pretty much spot on. Imrul should solely concentrate in odi's and Ash can do whatever he wants to

Judging by the performance of the FC opener this season, Marshall Ayub should open the innings with Tamim, even though he is a middle order player.
A double century is a double century, no matter where and against who you play.

Naeem with his current form, is a must in our test line up against WI.
I'd prefer him at 4/5, not at open.

I will go with Kyes. He is unflattering, no doubt. But one thing he is good at is letting Tamim play. In other words, they play well as pair, and usually yields better partnership.

If the best yield is what one wants, it has to be Anamul Hoque for sure. Yes, trying him out in T20Is went horribly wrong but here, we are talking about tests. And yes, although he is still too young, I believe he has it in him to do far better than anybody else in the pipeline. In other words, nobody other than him and Nazimuddin comes close to contention for the number 2 spot and Anamul Hoque will definitely surpass Nazimuddin with his performance if he gets a chance.

I will agree with Rubu bhai. Partnership is really important. Listed below is top 5 overall partnership.

Apart from the obvious choice for opening batsman, Tamim that is, I don't think anyone can match Imrul Kayes in ODI. For test I think ZS has got the edge over Imrul. Anamul is in the pipeline to be the next partner of Tamim or at least I hope to see him there.

ZS never stretches his bottom hand. I'd love him to see stretching his powerful left hand like Shakib or Tamim. It's as though his left hand is tied to his waist from elbow upward. More often than not he gets out by top edging as a result. (MHO)

He makes me cringe every time I watch him live but he's good for the longer version. He can stay at the crease for a long time unlike Imrul Kayes.

ODI - IK
Test - ZS

I will go with Kyes. He is unflattering, no doubt. But one thing he is good at is letting Tamim play. In other words, they play well as pair, and usually yields better partnership.

We didn't have problem with the opening spots as they were producing good partnerships between TI-IK. Removing him was the mistake.

But, I think we have already spoiled it and his confidence as such by removing him ... He isn't performing that well these days too. I think we should try players who are in form and playing well in the NCL. Specially the players who were earlier dropped from the national team and doing well now. At least we will have some base for selection. Otherwise we will only be trying our luck and taking chances only. That doesn't make sense.

Can we have Ash to open? Ash will be selected no matter what. So why make him bat low? He has been opening with Tamim in T20 and I think he did a fair job..Not that bad. I go for experience when test is concerned and who is more experienced than Ash?

And No Nazim please..His performance in the PAK series is once in a life time thing. It wont be repeated

Its going to be tough to pick because none of these guys distanced themselves from each other. Only SN and Shamsur ended up notching 50's. While Soumya and Anamul look like the long term solutions, they still are very young and inexperienced. I wouldn't mind having them be backups for the time being. I would go with an experienced player and that would be SN. He did hit a 97 against Pakistan in a tough situation. So to me, he seems the favorite now to open with Tamim. There is 1 more round to go so there's still time left for 1 of these guys to stamp their place out in the team.

he showed good enough technique and temperament last time he selected for the test series. even in that series he looked more reliable than Tamim . We tend to forget things so easily.

That's just 1 innings bro. Check his innings out in the very next match in Dhaka against Pakistan and you'll see how Nazimuddin would most likely struggle on true sporting wickets. Also check his performances overall besides that one innings. His technique was just exposed big time and I'm not sure he can sustain his success in the international arena. Of course I would love to be proven wrong but I doubt it.

I know what you are saying. But you know that our selectors have this platonic love for Ash and he will be picked. So if he gets a chance why not have him open? Yes he is the most experienced failure and its unfortunate that he gets so many chances to fail. But I would rather see him fail early than see hin throw his bat at everything like a fool at a stage when we need to bat sensibly..

which of our opener all we have tried so far in our test history except tamim doesn't struggle in sporting wicket? They don't only struggle they look miserable. They always look clueless in test in batting paradise wicket hack even our own yard.
Nazimuddin certainly looked better to me than all other opener partnered to be tamim last time i checked and its against one of best bowling attack. He deserve it more than other in upcoming series.

by the way, ash own me :). By mistake i selected ash as tamim's opening partner. or was it ash's voodoo magic guided me there?

I agree that besides Tamim, all our other top order batsmen are below par once it comes to batting on true sporting wickets but from judging Nazimuddin compared to even the likes of SN, Ash, Junaid, Jahurul, I think he's even worse. At least with those guys, they could somewhat survive tough conditions but Nazimuddin can't.

Well let's see how all these guys do in the next round. I still feel the competition is wide open for that 2nd opener's spot.

Though I want to see Anamul, the selectors will stick with Nazimuddin because

1. He had a good outing in the last Test series
2. Anamul isn't snatching his chance with recent performances.
3. If the no.3 spot goes to someone other than Nafees, maybe Naeem or Mominul, they would want someone with more experience at the top.

Robiul Islam to Taufeeq Umar, no run, dropped first ball after lunch! Nazimuddin has clanged a total sitter. Short of a length, angled across and Umar goes for the cut. He plays it uppishly, straight to gully and Nazimuddin doesn't hold on.

I don't think the fans or the selectors have any doubt about Anamul being a genuine prospect for us. The question really is when is the best time to bring him in. In the past we brought in talented youngsters without success so do we take the same risks with him? or do we give him couple more years with the A side to improve?

i think anamul is the type of talent that improves when challenged to, he make take a bit of time to settle in but once he does he'll be really good. plus i believe that if the selectors have anamul opening with tamim, mominul at #3, nasir and shakib at 4/5 and mushy at 6 preferably but even 7 then anamul will be starting off playing in the strongest BD batting line-up assembled to date which is a good thing, plus it's home conditions against a weaker side. anyway if anamul scores a century next match i'm pretty sure a few of us will pencil him in as a certainty for 2nd opener spot in the tests but we'll have to wait and see what he comes up with.

My only concern is that we are dealing with BD management here. In our culture we can show all the love when the performance is good and then when the bad patch eventually comes, all the good work is forgotten and the knives are out. We have seen that kind of sentiment shown to even Shakib and Tamim.

If Anamul is given the opportunity in the series then I would really want to see him get a continuous run for at least 3-4 series to cement his place regardless of his performance, but I am afraid that he might get discarded sooner than that by our management and fans if he fails.

The selection process should be in line with performance with our domestic competition. We must ensure that players are rewarded for their effort in FC cricket. Blooding in talented youngsters come off as a good move only once in awhile when the talent concerned are the likes of Tendulkar, Ponting etc. We have a better chance if we follow the route of Hussey (many years in FC cricket first) in my opinion in terms of selection.

Weaker opponent? West Indies side is actually stronger than a lot of sides. They have a strong batting, a strong seam attack... they only had a deficiency which was the spin attack and now they have it too.

If you want to debut Anamul, Mominul, Marshal, Taskin... wait for the Zimbabwe tour or the New Zealand tour at home.

There are valid points on both sides in this argument. The key here is if we do take a chance with Anamul now then we have to persist with him until he comes good. We have to remember how Kohli struggled in the test series in Australia until the last test and quickly turned things around.

If we continue with Nazimuddin we should expect a more immediate result as he is no longer a newbie.

He deserves 3/4 series too, as you are ready to give to Anamul. Especially after doing not that bad in the first series. Except against U19 level whatever chances were given to Anamul, he failed in everything....IMO he is being rated much higher than what he actually is.

If we have to give any value to our domestic cricket, this is the time, because all the national team players are participating after a long time. And the guys performing well in this NCL, should be taken mor seriously.

well nazimuddin hasn't performed yet this NCL and as for taking value to domestic cricket anamul has performed well as a top 3 batsman in the NCL over the last 2 seasons whereas nazimuddin is a middle order batsman being made an opener at international level. at least anamul bats in the top order, nazimuddin is a middle order batsman forced to open at the highest level which he's never succeeded in (if you include t20s and ODIs).

Anamul gets more chances in my book because he is very young and totally new to international cricket and looks to be an obvious talent. His performance in the U-19 worldcup is proof of his ability and even cricinfo identified him as a player to watch out prior to the tournament. So investing time in him is more or less a risk free investment if we aim for the long haul.

In case of Nazimuddin, (although one should not mix performances in different format) many would agree he has serious technical issues as evident from the Asia Cup. There is no doubt he has played well against Pakistan and should be rewarded for it but we cannot rule out the fact that as a long term solution he might just not have skills to be a permanent opener for us. Will it be unfair to Nazimuddin if he gets dropped after one bad series?.. the answer is yes but given the information we have on him, it might also be a tough call that the selectors have to make to get series results in our favor.

Performance in NCL should be given priority but the problem the selectors have is that our domestic competition performances counts very little when it comes to succeeding in the international arena. That's why players like Tushar Imran could never make it at the highest level despite several opportunities.

We will all be happy if he scores 30. He is a very slow player and it will take him 1.5 session to score 30. Keeping one end intact for 40-45 overs is good enough.

Right now only Shahriar Nafees is the way to go. Forget about Vim, BiZ, Nazza or any other Kodus.
Let the cousins open together :)

They're cousins?:o

Imrul Kayes for me. Better technique than Nazimuddin. You can count him to at least get into a 50-60 run partnership.

I will agree with Rubu bhai. Partnership is really important. Listed below is top 5 overall partnership.

It doesn't matter who you pick at #2, failure is inevitable. Anamul will score a duck, Imrul will make a single digit score, Zunaed will get out to an ugly swipe, Nazimuddin might contribute 20-30.

Bring back Javed Omar, at least he carried the bat on debut.

Then better bring back Ash... He scored a century on Debut...:)

But Vim has lost his mojo for a good while now. Can't muster a run even by Kaedging! Stats can lie sometime...

Don't get me wrong. For I, indeed, a Kaedge supporter. Right now he needs a vacation from international duty and sort out his mess with the help of a good batting coach and by playing more FC.

Imrul Kayes for me. Better technique than Nazimuddin. You can count him to at least get into a 50-60 run partnership.

better technique indeed, Imrul is the only batsman in the world who can score runs by edging at will (or not)
And yes about the 50_60 partnership where Imrul's contribution will be 8-12 runs.

anyone except ash please! yes i'd even take imrul over ash but really no imrul either please. of the ones we've tried numerous times i think SN would be the one to give another go, junaid did well at #3 but didn't do so well as opener. i still think it's between, or should be between, anamul and nazimuddin. if that's what the selectors are thinking it could easily come down to who scores the most in the FC matches leading up to the selection of the squad.

BengaliPagol

Im surprised that alot of people are picking Imrul as a test opener. Yes he is a decent partner for Tamim but he has shown that he is not capable in test cricket. But i would certainly pencil him in as the batting partner for Tamim in ODIs. No way will Ash get the job done as opener.

In terms of being fair id give Nazim another go. Hasnt done much wrong in the tests that he has played. But as personal preference id like Nafees to be given another go. I still believe that Nafees has still alot left to offer for the national team. He has that mentality for test cricket and his technique is much more reliable than Nazim's. All i ask from Nafees is to score 30 or more runs to build a platform with Tamim. That is all i ask from him.

Anamul isnt ready just yet. I understand Gowza bhais reasoning of why Anamul deserves a chance now. I would have given him a go but it just doesnt make sense atm because he isnt in form. It just wouldnt make sense debuting an out of form youngster to face 140k+ bowlers which he probably rarely faces. I say not now but cetainly in the near future when he picks up his form.

Mominul deserves the #3 spot. But if he doesnt get picked then id understand why.

I cant believe that Australia can drop a batsmen as good as Ponting from the national team but BCB can pick Abuls and the Shafiuls.

Its either for me
1. Tamim Iqbal
2. Shahriar Nafees
3. Mominul Haque

Or...
1. Tamim Iqbal
2. Nazimuddin
3. Shahriar Nafees

Interesting to note that 20% of the voters have voted for IK to partner Tamim in the Tests.

I'm glad that Tamim justified his inclusion a bit more by doing well in the NCL, the greatest FC league anywhere, to open with the incomparable Mohammad Nazimuddin. Our Nazza is better than Amla and Kohli combined and Tamim only needs to give him the strike for us to post 650-0 after two days of glorious test batting where we'll surely witness Da Naz shatter Lara's test as well as FC record.

We're VERY lucky to have him, an absolute master against quality swing off of a green, grassy pitch and revisionist English grammar.

The Windies should be afraid, VERY afraid of Il Nazzadino Di Cittagogna.

Here's my fantasy XI, of course each player on this list would need to justify his place by performing in the incomparable NCL first:

1. Mohammad Nazimuddin (C-seaming allrounder)
2. Imrul Kayes (Bangla speaker)
3. Rokibul Hasan (VC-emotions coach)
4. Mehrab Hossain "Jr" (English speaker, spinning allrounder)
5. Myshukur Rahman
6. KM Rajin Saleh Alam (spinning allrounder)
7. Muhammad Najimuddin (WK)
8. MS ShuVo (spinning allrounder)
9. Mohammad Nizamuddin (seaming allrounder)
10. Muhammad Nijamuddin (specialist express bowler)
11. Abdur Razzak (specialist spinner)

12th Man: Shahdat Hossain Rajib
13th Man: Abul
14th Man: Nafis Iqbal
15th Man: Arafat Salauddin

I know it's risky bringing in youngsters but imagine if tamim, shakib and mushy has stayed in domestic cricket for another 5 years and didn't get the chance in the national team when they did? Most likely they would not be anywhere near as good as they are now and the national team wouldn't be as good as it is now because they'd only just be coming in now and wouldn't be as good as they are. So yes it's risky bringing in young players but you can get a lot of rewards from them to. The domestic system isn't strong enough yet to breed international quality players at least not many of them, most players have to transform into one once they make the team even the ones who don't get there until they are older and more experienced in domestics.

But you cant hide the fact that he has an average of 27 in both FC and in Tests. Consistency is the main issue with all our batsmen but i feel like SN is the guy for this series. Even though he hasnt been racking up big totals, he has been fairly consistent. JS has done nothing up until this point. Mominul has to be in the team because he has been the most consistent batsmen in the country (after Tamim & Naeem). Nazim doesnt make the list tbh.

2. Shahriar Nafees
3. Mominul Haque

Shahriar Nafees: Based on what?

How about 1) that 100 against mighty Australia, 2) those consecutive 100s against mighty Zimbabwe, 3) his original hairstyle, 4) his recently acquired Almost-Sunnahman creds, and 5) his ability to speak comparatively decent English?

Junaid Siddique: Can't hold the bat anymore

The Big Z just scored a near 200 in the ongoing NCL, the greatest, most competitive First Class tournament known to man.

Jahurul Islam: Lost whatever he had

Can't forget the shezda-mara 50 in the Asia Cup. Also scored a near 100 in the ongoing NCL, the greatest, most competitive First Class tournament known to man.

Soumya Sarkar: Way too inconsistent, plus, just played 5/6 FC.

I agree with you there. Better not have anyone inherently pro-Indian in the team. The country has been overrun by RAW/CIA/MOSSAD agents already. Only cricket remains pure and let us keep it that way. Bad enough that they conspired to create Bangladesh by destroying the unity of the Ummah, chasing daddies and uncles out of the country and into various corners of London and NYC.

Imrul Kayes: Do you want him?

Yes I do. Both cricket and the world would be frightfully landlocked without classy Shagor from Meherpur. Meherpur also produces the finest mutilated goat-meat on the planet.

Mominul Haque: Not a opener
Naeem Islam: Not a opener

Openers are not born, they're made. DaRock can easily be made into our own Amla.

Mohamad Ashraful: I'll leave it to you ;)

Other than the Nazza!, he's the best ever. A no brainer really.

Wonder why we open this thread in this forum ??!!

Nazimuddin just played 2 test and selectors shouldn't be that naive that they will change him this soon, it will raise question about selector's capability isn't it so ??!!

First 5 (five) test scores of a player:

0, 0
0, 1
0, 0
25, 22
0, 25
==========

Total: 73 runs in 10 innings

SL selectors keep faith in their ability and he ends AVG 39.02 in his career with 16 test century.

I hope our selectors are confident about their ability to judge a player's capability and give break-through to those who really have some talent.

I am now more concerend about middle order who will be key to score big...unfortunately Riad, Mushfiq, Shakib all are not in very good form hence a collapse is likely to occur when we bat and the game might be shorten within four days.

What do say about Junaid, Nazim, and Imrul then? Sadly they seem to have an even worse technique. Anyways, it's no point of talking about technique with our batsmen. Subcontinental batsmen in general don't have the best of techniques. At the end of the day, it's about making your technique work. Do Tamim and Shakib have the most picturesque technique out there? Yet they've been pretty successful so far in their careers. Didn't SN end up scoring a 138 against Australia against their daunting pace attack? Didn't Junaid hit a 106 against England? They've proven they can score against good attacks albeit pretty inconsistently but it's the best we really have. We have to put up with them until younger players like Soumya and Anamul prove they are ready.
