View Full Version : World Class, Test Class and Match winners

I was wondering if we have any?
But first, my definitions:
World class: A player who could walk into or be seriously considered for a World first/second string team. Dravid (IND) would walk in and Inzy (PAK) would be a strong contender.
Test Class: A solid test player who would be a contender to play for the stronger teams - perhaps in the top 50 in his art. Sarwan (WI) is test class but Matsikenyeri (ZIM) isn't.
Match winner: Someone who can single handidly change the course of the game. Consider Streak (ZIM), or Harmison (ENG) or almost any one from AUS.
The answer to the first and third is easy - we don't have any. No, SUjon doesn't count.
Test Class? Perhaps a few.
Bashar and Rafique no doubt.
The following are knocking on the doors if not already there:
Rajin, Ashraful, Rana, Mushfique and Masree.
Too early to tell of Enamul Jr, Nafees and some of the other youngsters nipping at the heels of the seniors..
What thoughts?

I would like to add one more category.
Stalwarts - mr dependable; there for you; doesn't have to be world/test class nor does he have to be a match winner, but he is there; solid..
My vote goes to Pilot as the first Mr. Stalwart of Bangladesh. Rafique, Rana, Rajin and Mushfique are the other contenders.

World class: None
Test class: Bashar, Rajin, Ashraful, Rana, Rafique, Mashrafee
Matchwinner: None...I am hoping Rana will become one and one of our other "allrounders" like Kaps!!!
Stalwarts (consistent): Pilot, Rafique, Mushfique, Rana

WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE MUSHFIQUE??? What's he done recently? He's never hit a 50 and he's got poor bowling figures. Overrated

Test class-Rafique and Masrafee
Stalwarts-Pilot
On the issue of matchwinners, we have many "potential" and that is the problem. Players like Alok, Masrafee and Rafique have shown glimpses of their talent ,which could turn games around, but they cannot show consistency like we see with Streak.

i am not really so sure like all of u here that we dont hav any matchwinners..
Perhaps Rafiq or Masree cud become matchwinners if the rest of the team had been atleast in close position to the better test nations!
even Rafiq's batting and recently Ashraful's.. cud do the job of winning the match!
can we realy compare or look for Matchwinners whn we r comparing between BD team and much stronger other teams??
:duh:

well the thing is that maybe rafiq and ashraful might be our matchwinners. but i think that they alone can not bring success. they need some back ups from the other players too. dannabad.

As a developing and young test nation, I think it is more suitable to look for "potentials" in those catagory instead, from among the tigers. Like, who has the most potentials to develop unto a world class, test class and match winning player. Of course, we have a few really good players as of now, but a bunch of them are knocking at the door quite loudly. Hopefully in few years, we can move into the "actual" catagory instead of this rather dreamy "potential" one.

What about the old stalwarts like Akram Khan and Aminul Islam? Their International career is over; and certainly we can put them in certain categories; like "match winners" and "test class" players?
And if its Bangladesh we're talking about, thinking in the same line as Bangladesh being a young test nation and so 'potential' should be considered than going to the 'actual' first; then I must tell you to category both former and current Bangladeshi players into 'world class', 'test class', or 'match winners'.
For example, I don't think anyone would disagree if I say that Aminul Islam is a 'test class' batsman, and Akram Khan is a 'match winner' in One Day (may be not International) cricket.

Rafique is the only player in Bangladesh who could walk into most sides. Given the right pitch he would get a game for Australia. As for the rest of the side they are only potentials. Ashraful doesnt strike me as a test player. He is too loose and I dont think we will be talking about him in 4-5 years time for that reason. Could make as a oneday player should he improve his bowling.

well wang, no offense but unfortunately after reading your replies i really have concerns about your knowledge in bangladesh cricket. because many big cricketers have talked big about ashraful. and ashraful if you know or not i dont know but he is the youngest person to score 100 runs in the first test match. so i dont know why you think that he is a loose cricket player.

It is very rare that one guy can win a match... match winners are those ppl who sets the match up while others follow his lead to win the match... well thats how I wud define a matchwinner... I am sure the defn will vary from ppl to ppl...
its funny how we are terming our players as matchwinners given that we dont win matches at all... lol...
ok done being pessimistic... we have good players in the current team... and some ARE world class player...
Rafique: ONE OF THE best spinners in the world undoubtebly and a handy batsman in the tail...
Sumon: he is ok... wud be nice to see him more consistent... I am not complaining tho
Pilot: dependable... damn good keeper... and a decent batsman... he is easily among the best keepers on the world right now... given that all the other keeper (except a few all others are trying to find their feet on the ground rit now)... Pakistan had to bring back Moin khan... Parthiv patel SUCKS!!!! and so on... taibu is k... nothing special... Pilot wud be better than him on any given day...
sooon to be world class:
Ashraful: His comeback cudnt have been better... Hats off to him... :)
Rajin: Gritty.... works damn hard for whatever he is doing...
Rana: A great find... needs to be nurtured... and I think he is a bevan in the making... well ok ok... i am being a little tooo hopeful but come on... the dude's good...
And Mashrafee... allah oke taratari bhalo koruk... the guy needs to show that BD has good pacers... not pichchi pichchi pacers who trudge along and dhila dhila ball koray.... ONE POINT HERE>>> i havent seen Tareq aziz and alamgir kabir ball... so they are out of the bashing.... :P Masri is easily the best pacer to have ever worn the BD national team kits... No offence to past greats... masri is the best...

good definitions by zunaid.
now some 4 years on...the picture has changed dramatically...and we're still on the learning stages.
world class: shahadat is the closest, but only if he continues at his present pace (of development) and 52 career strike rate really is impressive
test class: mash (despite his present form), SN, maybe tamim and junaid
match winner: we've got tons, only they don't fire often enough...ash, aftab, razzak, rasel, and shahadat
dependables: right now only shahadat
*********
as far as my ultimate dream/view when this current generation of players is done:
world class: shahadat, ash, aftab, tamim, enam jr, rasel and razzak (ODIs)
test class: mash, junaid, SN, rahim
dependables: shahadat, SN, junaid, rahim, rasel, razzak, farhad, and mash
newbies: imrul, naeem, rubel

Rafiq was our best, but could he be considered for any team? I dodn't think so. May be SA and Eng only. But he is a test class bowler.
We have potential matchwinners, potential world class, potential stalwarts.... none have proven enough to be put in any one class yet. Ash is going to play in UK, so you can understand how they are rated by the world. Off course there are potentials.

Rajib, Aftab and Ash have the potential to be. But test class players, we don't have any test class players apart from Shahadat, Mash at the moment in my opinion, if we did we wouldn't be losing games an innings or whatever every game. Zunaid and Tamim are unproven and no doubt they may become world class players but at present they aren't proven to be any. Match winners i agree, they can be anybody

The two biggest disappointments have to be Enam Jr. and Ash. The talent was there. The mental side wasn't
