Report Card for the BD-SL Test Series

Only players who have played both the test matches are considered. This rules out Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Elias Sunny, Shahdat Hossain, Rubel Hossain and Robiul Islam.

Jahurul Islam

Credit must be given where its due. Despite having pockets of extreme nervousness, Jahurul at least stuck it through with what God gave him for skills as a batsman. His jittery temperament was the reason for him losing his wicket in all 4 cases, but it seemed as if though he was battling himself, trying hard to prove the detractors wrong. Such effort should be considered. Who is to say that he didn’t prevent a collapse with all 4 of his slow deliberate innings?

Grade: B+

Mohammad Ashraful

We all know what it is with Ash. So to judge this man, we can only use scores and think nothing else of the matter. Any more effort spent on analyzing him is a waste of anyone’s time. So going by that logic, his 1st match was a success, his 2nd match a failure. As simple as that. I will be merciful and not take his inconsistent reputation into consideration. So his grade has to go down right in the middle. An average of the 5 letter grades. Beautiful catch by the way to dismiss Eranga.

Grade: C+

Mominul Haque

The revelation of the series, if you can call it that in the context of the Bd team. Was pretty consistent with his performance all throughout the series although it’s clear that he too, like many other batsmen in the team suffers from a bad case of nerves, hence unable to convert any of his leads to really big scores. As a matter of fact, he just crossed 50 once.

Grade: B+

Nasir Hossain

Don’t let the duck in his last innings fool you. His previous two innings were spectacular, even his 48. A natural run getter for the team and perhaps if he had got to play in the 2nd innings of the 1st match, we could have had one more score to judge him by. But really, he hasn’t done too much wrong except that duck. And with that he has shot himself in the foot, bringing down his grade by one letter.

Grade: B+

Mushfiqur Rahim

His keeping was generally good throughout the series. Still could have been more aggressive with his bowling strategy or fielding placements. Except for one innings, he was generally excellent with the bat. Very similar case to Nas’. And again, perhaps he should have turned his 40 to a bigger score in the 2nd match, but such can be the fluctuation of scores in a well-rounded batsmen. Reasonably acceptable.

Grade: B+

Mahmadullah Riyad

The worst performer of this series. Was routinely outshone by the tail which should leave him red-faced if he has the integrity of a vice-captain, which I’m sure he does. Also was nothing special with the ball. Bd went with 4 specialist bowlers in the test. He could have bowled with more intent, easing the pressure of the other 4 or simply giving them more breathing room. The wickets he did get were not meaningful in the outcome of the 1st test.

Grade: D-

Abul Hassan

Was more than decent with the ball, for the first time in his career I might add. It is clear he can really focus on his line and length when he wants to. The question is, why doesn’t he do it in every spell? Still should have picked up more wickets but impressed with the bat given his position. At this point of time, his batting skills are no less than other Bd pacers like Mashrafe and Shafiul. But it’s wickets, not runs, that he needs.

Grade: C+

Shohag Gazi

Still continues his impressive stint in the team and has surely solidified his place for a long time to come. Despite criticism of bowling a bit flat at times in this series, he still managed to be the premier threat to the Sri Lankan batsmen. His 7 wickets had nothing to do with luck, all were spectacular deliveries. And if he can do that while being flat, well that says a lot about this man’s prowess with the ball. Also, he’s building up his reputation an aggressive stroke maker, these 25+ cameos he his churning out consistently cannot be ignored. Especially from your lead bowling option.

Ash c-? huh?

March 19, 2013, 09:51 PM
You are a tough grader.

Would you have given Ash a B+ if he crossed 200?

A double century got Mushfiqur only a B+?

You were, however, generous to Riyad.

I give Roey a B- for his grading.

PS: kidding aside, at least you put yourself out there and have put in justifications for your choices.

Report Card for this Report Card : F

Seeing Jahurul and Mushfiq in the same grade would have been enough to throw the paper away, if I was marking it.

Grading the grader?

And then somewhere along the line, Roey gets blind.

Jahurul - B 83 out of 100
His grit is something we can definitely use in test matches. He is not too bad, inshaAllah if he plays more test matches he should, at least theoretically get better with time and more international experience. I would like to see what he has to offer in near future. With experience, we are hoping he will resolve his technical issues.

Ashraful - B+ 87.5 out of 100
Barring that almost Double Hundred and Great First Test Batting, Second test he did ok but the runout really changed the fate of the match.

Mominul Haque - A 93 out of 100
subhanAllah! great find for Bangladesh. For a debut series, I will go easy on him, Give him an A since almost all of his dismissals were out because umpire gave him out. Missed out on an A+ for not converting any one of his great starts into a century, which would have greatly helped our cause in the second test.

Mushfiqur Rahim A+ 98 out of 100
What more can we ask for? He simply did his best that he could offer both as captain and as Batsmen. Sometimes things just don't go in your way...sometimes they do. This man just keeps at it :) If he stayed for longer in the second innings of second test and scored a century, I would have given him the super-rare A++

Riyad - D- 61.3 out of 100
F for batting and C- for Bowling leaves him with a D-

Nasir Hossain - B+ 89.1 out of 100
We really needed his services in the second innings of the second test where he decided not to show up... otherwise another great series for him.

Abul Hasan - B- 80.7 out of 100
impressed with the way he bowled and batted. I reckon he should get better with more experience. he does lose concentration at times, but it is common for a youngster like him from Bangladesh.

Shohag Gazi -A- 91.4 out of 100
When you consider he had to do a bulk of the bowling in both tests, Even though he didn't get as much success as he or us expectant fans would have liked, he did bowl very intelligently and his effort and dedication deserves at least an A-. I am pretty sure he himself would love to improve on this performance.

Overall, Barring Riyad a satisfactory Series for Bangladesh and most of the players.

Bangladesh: Overall Grade: B 85 out of 100 simply because they exceeded many people's expectations! of course, given the history, and Overseas tour, Playing in Sri Lanka against Umpires, tough Outfield is always a challenge... given all the circumstances they should not be too disappointed. Bottom line, we were 100 runs short in first innings and another 100 runs short in the second innings.

To everybody whining about Mushfiq and Jahurul getting the same grade, it's not about the aggregate runs,it's about consistency too. I suspected everyone would have wool over their eyes after the 200, and I was bang on. But then again, we got to see 3 innings from Mushfiq. Perhaps a good score on the 4th one,(if he had the opportunity) would have upgraded him from a B+ to an A-. Jahurul doesn't move in my opinion. Or are y'all advocating for a B- instead of a B+ for Jahurul, in which case it's okay. Either ways, the difference isn't much. Mushfiq's responsibility as a captain factors in too, don't forget.

1. Enamul Haque Bijoy: F

Did the hard for work but failed to continue on an effing batting track. The fact that his longish stay at the crease may have made things a little easier for others doesn't spare him because he's an opener with a job to do and has serious ability to do that job once focused.

2. Jahurul Islam Omi: D+

Did all the hard work but failed to convert. That being said, both his crease occupation and 40s were valuable in creating a good foundation. Sad that he couldn't take advantage of the foundation himself, but that doesn't mitigate the importance of his hard work. Also the fact that he's a player with limited ability and temperament (in the 40s, especially) compared to some, makes his effort worthy of a D+ in my book.

3. Tamim Iqbal: D

Same stamina and conversion issues continue to deny him greater glory. Enough said.

4. Sir Mohammad Ashraful Matin, KRT (Knight of the Restaurant Table): C

That 190 was a major contribution to our best test batting performance ever. His failure to convert alongside subsequent failures, though pretty much predictable, weren't enough to drag him down to a D.

5. Mohammad Mahmudullah Riyad: F

Tall, strong, handsome and adored by his fanboyz who always sound like adoring and intellectually inept teenies and emos whenever they attempt to defend his lack of performance, his well documented sissiness was challenged and he failed miserably. The putu-putu bowling yielding wickets due to unforced batting error didn't help his cause any because HE'S IN THE TEAM FOR HIS BATTING.

6. Mominul Haque Shourobh: B

Has conversion issues and looks shaky at times, but he's still better than tried and tested alternatives now sitting in Bangladesh. Good work for a test debutante and hopefully he'll get better with time.

7. Mohammad Mushfiqur Rahim Mit'hu: A (batting), B (wicket keeping), B- (captaincy)

Led a match saving effort with a historic feat. Enough said. His poor lateral movement and sudden lack of focus behind the stumps are still problematic and costly. Captaincy-wise, his admirable leadership in and out of the dressing room continues to be tarnished by his often clueless and formulaic field settings in situations requiring aggression, and prolonged brain freezes.

8. Nasir Hossain: A

Banglar Hussey in the making, we're very lucky have this remarkable young cricketer playing for us. Whatever he lacks in flashy ability and experience, he makes up in desire, gumption, comparatively better temperament and intelligence. His consistency is exemplified by his average and vice versa.

9. Shohag Gazi: B-

Showed intent to scalp and did his best on a dead track without any pressure generated from the other end, and thanks to Mushfiq, without an aggressive and innovative field to bowl to.

10. Abul Hasan Raju: D-

11. Rubel Hossain: D-

12. Robiul Islam: D-

13. Kazi Shahadat Hossain Rajib al Ananta bin Shahrukh de la Sharapova: D-

14. Mohammad Elias Sunny: D-

All exercised their right to bowl loose deliveries in pretty much every over and mainly depended on unforced batting error to get wickets. The odd good spell, dead tracks, junior high school level fielding errors, in some cases poor ability, bad calls, and cameos with the bat mitigate their failures barely enough deny each an F. I'm being generous here.

Based on the one test match he did play, I would give him a C-. Seemed to able to step it up in certain spells. His performance was almost identical to Abul's actually, except that he was more herky-jerky in his run up and seemed to tire way too easily. Not fit enough.

That's because he was used for over 8 overs on the trot. Even Australian Pacers or Dale Steyn doesn't bowl that long no matter how good they are. Pacers need their rest on a hot humid day after every 6 overs....they need to be rotated carefully.

We fans have our favorites. However, the truth of the matter is, if you perform you deserve to stay, no matter who you are. Look at Enamul Haque Bijoy, Everyone here LOVES him, but he was dropped because he couldn't perform.... Simple as that. Back to Robiul, I believe he Has what it takes and finally I understood what Shane Jurgenson was talking about regarding his improvement in the nets. I think he is a keeper. Although, for Now, I would just keep him to tests only.

I remember the first time Robiul Debuted in Lords in 2010....my goodness, I was thinking to myself, What were the selectors thinking? He was all over the place. Now I kinda see what he has to offer. He steadily improved since then.

Will all due respect Rifat, we may have VERY different understanding of cricket, especially when it comes to the nuanced differences unique to all 3 fundamental aspects test cricket, and therefore it is not surprising that we also have different standards of fairness. I feel I'm being generous to the seamers as a whole and stated why in my report card. We'll have to agree to disagree on this and a great many other things about cricket, life, the universe and everything else. So let's just leave it at that :)

Agreed. But this fella, something tells me his bowling action is not intentional. He deliberately slows himself down just to bowl at the box ,which is excellent of course, but can be done without causing such torture to the body. Right now we have a crop of very average pacers,so I'm continuously looking for any factors which make someone special or shows you the promise of unlocking potential. With Robiul, I don't see it happening.Something very funny about how he holds up his body. I'm being extremely judgmental, I know. But I call it as I see it. Hey! I actually defended him when everybody was criticizing his inclusion in the 2nd match. But from what I saw, he and Abul are still below one step of Masharafe,Shafiul and Rubel.

I give Roey a B- for his grading.

PS: kidding aside, at least you put yourself out there and have put in justifications for your choices.

I will take the B-. :)

Grading ain't easy. People's feelings get hurt way too easily when their expected grade of a player doesn't match the reality.

My Grading:
1. Mushfiq: A (first double hundred by a Bangladeshi. Held our batting together)

2. Gazi: A (Fought hard in a lone fight. Carried the attack throughout the day with super long spells)

3. Nasir: B+ (Showed his brilliance in this series as usual. Expected a bit more in the 2nd innings)

4. Mominul: B+ (Played well throughout but seems another player easily satisfied after reaching 50)

5. Ashraful: B (Played an amazing innings in the first test. Extraordinary considering the circumstances surrounding him. Had a very poor 2nd Test in comparison)

6. Rubel: C+ (worked hard, bowled good lines but failed to give us the breakthroughs. At the end of the day the wicket column counts more than anything)

7. Jahurul: C (Another Junaid in the making. Can easily see him get to mediocre scores and then get out)

8. Robiul: C (Inconsistent and Expensive but he did try hard. Got wickets off rubbish deliveries and good ones. Overall a mixed performance)

9. Tamim: C (Got to his token fifty and got out. At this moment him losing his wicket after 50 has become a certainty. If we had a stronger batting squad i would give him a D for his excuses)

10. Anamul: D (He not a Test Opener. He should have been played in the middle order. I think he has a lot more promise than Mominul and Mominul is lucky to be playing in the middle order while he gets to open)

11. Raju: D (performed exactly as expected. Few wickets, lots of runs conceded, never built pressure)

12. Shahadat: F (less i talk about him the better. He is supposed to be the experienced one)

13. Ryad: F (flopped with the bat and ball and practically made us a 10 man team)

14. Sunny: F (looks more and more likely that his debut test performance was a fluke)

Robiul had the new ball to make an impact. In my opinion he got couple of wickets with deliveries that were absolute rubbish and his economy was very poor considering the heavy outfield and uneven bounce that was on the pitch. On a pace friendly pitch when the team goes with 3 Seamers you would expect more impact out of your new ball bowlers. In contrast Rubel bowled accurately and very well with the old ball without much success. He earned his wickets with good deliveries and kept the pressure up from his end.

Oh sure. No doubt. I meant reality as in the finality of the report card. People come in expecting to see one thing, and if the grades don't match their liking, they get mad.

But, I can say that Robiul was effective in both innings, while Rubel was effective only in the first. Furthermore, Rubel does not generally bowl well with the shiny new ball.
