This is a fascinating group because other than Greece, a team inspired to play like Mahmudullah Riyad, each one of the other teams has the ability to advance. I pick CIV and Japan. Colombia are a great side on paper, especially with Falcao, but tend to succumb to possibly Cartel generated pressure at the big dance. They'll still beat Greece today but probably not convincingly without Falcao.

I'm really looking forward to this match. Love the way both teams play despite very different styles. Japan haven't looked back ever since emerging as a highly competitive side in 2002, and CIV have incredible team cohesion because of their tragic situation at home. Drogba is hellbent on playing his best and going deep into the tournament. That said, I see a 2-2 draw after an exciting match with lots of flair, pace and tactical excellence.

Peckerman! What a name

Watching Colombia play Greece and wondering why I'm wasting my time watching a bunch of verbose and talkative guys play mediocre soccer dominated by sloppy play. Makes me think of local soccer matches involving Badda Jagoroni except for the fact that these bitchy guys can still run around after 20 minutes and string together 3 passes. Not 4 or 5, but 3.

This is meth and coke fueled behavior with a soccer ball. Disgusting! I really want Japan and CIV to qualify from this group because seeing either Colombia or Greece in the second round will give me ulcer.

What a stunning strike from Honda! 1-0 Japan!!!

Sohel
June 14, 2014, 08:21 PM
Superb technique from Uchida. Good save by the CIV keeper.

Sohel
June 14, 2014, 08:25 PM
Classic FK from Yaya. Too high. The other type he does is too wide.

Sohel
June 14, 2014, 08:30 PM
The defense in front of Kawashima is simply superb in its poise. CIV need a finisher like Drogba. Good moves being foiled the closer they get to the box.

Sohel
June 14, 2014, 08:31 PM
Yaya takes another FK. Too high.

Sohel
June 14, 2014, 08:35 PM
Good save from Kawashima.

Honda almost gets another one. Shot deflected out for a corner.

Japan are very strong on the ball. They fight like hell to keep possession whenever challenged.

Japan lead 1-0 at halftime. CIV badly need Drogba.

What a goal from Honda, absolute beauty. Their defense has been top notch. Ivory Coast can't get anything going inside, they are all over them. I have them going through to the 2nd round.

This is unfortunate that being highly populated and also leading Asia in many sports, China is unable to
represent Asia in World Cups.

Sohel
June 14, 2014, 09:02 PM
It's a matter of time before China too makes its mark. It took Japan and Korea several World Cups and strong local leagues to get this good. Iran and Iraq also play with a positive attitude. The Saudis suck outside Asia. That win against Belgium was a fluke. Al-Owairan was their best player before his decline and imprisonment.

Sohel

Drogba comes in. Even at 60% he's lethal inside the box.

Sohel

CIV equalize. Great cross and an equally great header to finish.

Sohel
June 14, 2014, 09:23 PM
CIV go ahead 2-1. Another great cross and header, this time from Gervinho. Kawashima effed up on that one. Should've been saved.

I think Japanese players lack stamina. Their loss to Ivory Coast today is identical to the loss to Australia 2 WC ago.

They were leading 1-0 whole game and they then copped 3 goals in a row right at the end.

Sohel
June 15, 2014, 01:57 AM
I don't think stamina has ever been an issue with Japan, even when they were there to make up the numbers. The CIV equalizer was the result of a brilliant cross met by an equally brilliant header put together by very good players from a very good team. No stamina issues from what I saw. The game winner was also from an excellent cross but this time met with a header Kawashima should've had.

That said, it's terrible to give up a lead but then again trying to preserve a one goal lead by trying to run out the clock, especially for a team that scores most of its goals on the counterattack, isn't smart.

Japan has tactical issues to address, not anything else IMHO. :)

Sohel, Japan's consistency in attack and pace seemed to fade considerably as the match went further. And they seemed to press less and less. This could be an issue of CIV gradually finding their flow as the match went on, but could also be an effect of stamina.

They didn't look tired to me at all even when they stopped attacking. They were defending in numbers with incredible energy, and it took two brilliant crosses to break through that wall. They repelled everything else.

I think they were forced into their own zone by a far superior team that finally settled in, and found itself the minute Drogba stepped onto the field. He's only at 60% but his mere presence woke them up. Both CIV and Ghana have finishing issues, but are Cup contenders from defense to top of the mid-field. They can win the Cup once they produce quality finishers like Neymar, Oscar, Fred, Messi, Higuain, Suarez, C. Ronaldo, Torres, Van Persie, Klose etc.

They've only produced two world class finishers from their continent of late. Eto'o has been slowed down by too many matches and age, and an aging Drogba injured and at 60%. Cameroon has many other issues and aren't the class of Ghana or CIV. :)

Brilliant miss from Gutierrez! An open net from a yard away and all alone. It takes a genius to miss that. The only other blessing I know who can do stuff like that is Isheraikar Jahid Hoshen "Ameli" (pronounced "eh-mee-lee"). :notworthy:

1-0 .... Columbia leads

Sohel
June 19, 2014, 12:27 PM
Colombia execute a perfect corner kick and Rodriguez gets his head to it. 1-0 Colombia. Now CIV must find a finisher score twice to secure a place in the next round. Does Drogba still have it?

African teams and their finishing issues! Now Ghana have fine young finishers warming the bench until Gyan and Muntari decide to stop missing open nets.

Sohel
June 19, 2014, 12:28 PM
Drogba hits the wall but CIV sustain the pressure.

Sohel
June 19, 2014, 12:30 PM
Flat, ugly corner! Idiot! Colombia counterattack and Quintero score. 2-0 Los Carteleros.

Sohel
June 19, 2014, 12:31 PM
Yaya should take himself out. He's tired and hurting his team's chances.

Sohel
June 19, 2014, 12:34 PM
What a goal from "Zarbhin-ho"! 1-2 CIV. This one is far from over. CIV isn't coached by Mahmudullah Riyad!!!

Sohel
June 19, 2014, 12:37 PM
Yepes is still a very fine defender at 38.

Sohel
June 19, 2014, 12:41 PM
CIV better watch the counterattack! That's how The Cartel scored their second.

June 19, 2014, 12:42 PM

Japan should have no trouble beating Riyadist Republic of Greece. Go Samurai Blue!

Sohel
June 20, 2014, 02:26 AM
Great defensive effort from a 10-man Greece. In fact, they could've won the game had it not been for a couple of outstanding saves from a Eiji Kawashima at the top of his game. The Samurai Blue, perhaps because of technically gifted players like Endo, Honda and Okazaki, spend too much time stringing together too many passes trying to score a beautiful goal. A more positive version to Tiki-Taka if you will, because they always go forward before being repelled. That kind of approach didn't work against a defense that can become airtight with that kind of time. A more direct approach could've earned Japan a much needed victory.

I think Japan is pretty much finished. They play Columbia next and they will most likely lose that match. The Ivory Coast - Greece match will be interesting but I doubt Greece can make any impact. Ivory Coast has a deadly offense, and they almost leveled against Columbia. Greece lacks a genuine striker. So looks like it will be Columbia(1) and Ivory Coast(2) from this group.

Drogba should've done better with that pass to Zar-Bhin-Ho.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:15 PM
Good moves strung together by the Greeks but Barry read that perfectly. Good goalies own the 6YB like that.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:17 PM
The Cartel convert the penalty. 1-0 Colombia. The Samurai must go all out now. Yakuza tactics should trump Cartel brutality in theory.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:22 PM
Okazaki wins an FK in range for Honda. Poor challenge by the Cartelero defenseman. Honda kicks into the wall. Wasted opp.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:24 PM
Good entry by Okazaki but one touch too many. Martinez dives at the other end, trying to win another penalty.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:26 PM
Kagawa forces a good save. Good offense from the Samurai Blue. Riyad don't eat no sushi.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:30 PM
Uchida dispossessed outside the box, but Los Japoneses sustain pressure. Quintero dives at the other end as Les Japonais threaten Colombia again. Riyad don't eat no sashimi.

June 24, 2014, 03:31 PM
Japan win a corner. No, Riyad don't eat no sukiyaki.

Honda's FK barely misses. I suppose Riyad don't eat no yakitori.

Okubo's bicycle kick flies over the bar. No tempura ever for one Mohammad Mahmudullah Riyad.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:39 PM
Kaiseki and Riyad: never was and never will be. Kagawa's shot is deflected out for a corner. That was bang on target.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:42 PM
Yakiniku anyone? Not for Riyad that's for sure, maybe not for Martinez either as he fires wide like his Bangladeshi mentor.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:46 PM
No Riyad, donburi has nothing to do with Coppola and an elderly woman. Honda and Okazaki combine for the equalizer! The Samurai Blue will not surrender, 1-1 at the half in this must-win game.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 03:50 PM

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:14 PM
Great FK from Hames met by Riyad's minions. Nope, no mochi in that stomach. Martinez takes a bite of ohitashi from Hames' bento box and scores. 2-1 Colombia. What a match!

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:17 PM
Kagawa fires over the bar.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:18 PM

June 24, 2014, 04:20 PM
Okazaki gets elbowed to the face. Thug move from the Cartel hitman.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:22 PM
Kagawa's taken down. In Honda's range.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:23 PM
Honda's FK forces a save.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:24 PM
Beautiful move but Okubo fails to keep it down.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:34 PM
CIV have equalized.

June 24, 2014, 04:36 PM
Nagatomo forces a regulation save. Must do better because they 2 more in 13+ minutes. Let's go Samurai Blue!

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:39 PM
Excellent defending from Colombia.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:42 PM
Martinez ices it, 3-1. Colombia versus Uruguay. I hope Los Carteleros crush those guys. Valiant effort from Japan. Kagawa fails to find anyone at the end of his pass. Farid Mondragon comes in to break Milla's record.

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:49 PM
Hames scores! 4-1 Colombia! What a fine young player!!!

Sohel
June 24, 2014, 04:53 PM
Samoras dives and the ref falls for it. Greeks score to qualify for the next round. Early complacency costs CIV. They were playing for a draw like a bunch of Riyads. The Greeks were staying positive throughout but had to cheat to win this one. Shame on you Greece! Shame! Shame! Shame!

Sohel
June 25, 2014, 02:39 AM
That Samaras dive and subsequent penalty shot win clearly demonstrate the urgent need for mandatory review of all penalty shot decisions. Samaras has shamed the memory of Sparta, Thrace and Athens by making such an Argentine move.
