England-Italy. I see a 1-1 draw after a boring match. The only great thing about England, the original member of the Just-One-Cup Club, playing in the World Cup is the "50 Most Shocking" series inspired by their habitual blunders. The fact that they're not as good as they delude themselves into believing just adds to their predictable demnse.

Normally, I can always find a team to root for in any WC match. When the Poms play the catenaccio-favouring Italians, I can't; although there's always that little schadenfreude about seeing the English delusions shattered. That said, I agree with you Sohel; it probably won't be an exciting match.

Man, la defensa Uruguaso is so beautiful to watch. A seamless fellowship of real men defending their perimeter like real men. You need genius, Zindane-like vision, uberaccuracy, and perfectly timed and weighed passes to penetrate this cordon. Then you'll need a finisher with the quality of Romario, Ronaldo, Neymar, Batistuta, Voller, Klose, Drogba or Higuain to beat a very good goalie rarely out of position. Something very Italian about this defense. Lovely to watch and appreciate.

Cavani scores. Caveman looks perfect for all that pace and power. What he lacks in vision and sense, he compensates with that combination. A guy like him will score like crazy in the EPL.

Costa Rican wingers have pace and their midfielders execute stretch passes well. this is forcing the Uruguaso defense to come out and get beaten. The center's holding OK but Campbell is way too quick for them. He'll beat most defenders I reckon with that wide receiver's speed.

Indeed. Agree with you 100%. The Italians have such a defensive mindset that their offensive forays look good and organized only when they're on the counterattack. When not, they seem to be lacking imagination when putting together a string of moves. They tend to play the low percentage long ball hoping for a lone striker to do something with it. Boring. They had a much more organized and exciting offense in 2006 with Toni, Gilardino and Iaquinta being fed by Pirlo at his most imaginative.

I thought the English offense looked way better in comparison whenever Sterling and Sturridge were involved.

shaad
June 15, 2014, 08:32 AM
The Italians have always gone for the catenaccio defense, especially when they have a lead -- it saps the opponent's energy and leaves them open to a counterattack. I thought they were getting over it after the last WC when they showed a much more sparkling attack, but it seems like they'll never give it up. Yes, it's boring -- one of the reasons I can't bring myself to really support them, despite having brilliant players like Pirlo -- but one can't deny that it's effective.

Yes, it's boring -- one of the reasons I can't bring myself to really support them, despite having brilliant players like Pirlo -- but one can't deny that it's effective.

It's effective but negative soccer like Tiki-effing-Taka and I hate it. Don't get me wrong, I love watching good defensive units and appreciate the skills involved. Those skills are less flashy because they prevent rather than result in goals, but they are no less incredible. Think of guys like Beckenbauer, Matthaus, Baresi, Bossis, Maldini, Davids, Dunga, Zidane, Riquelme, Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta, and Essien. Each was physical with the ability to win and then hold the ball with minimal touches that create space and passing lanes. Some attack more than the others but all are solid 2-way players with vision. Watch Messi play defense and win balls. It's beautiful.

I played defense and holding midfield for my high school in Europe and in college. Also played in the highly competitive Latino league in the Bay Area before I stopped playing at a high level around 1998.

But negative soccer is about deliberately subverting the defense-offense balance which makes the game truly beautiful. Gotta plan on the fly and execute whilst trying to score and preventing your opponent from scoring. Like Ali before he discovered rope-a-dope out of the necessity of fighting a bigger, stronger and younger opponent in Foreman. :)

No disagreement there, Sohel. Part of the reason why we play football and also watch is because of the sheer aesthetics; and Italy's catenaccio robs the game of that pleasure.

I hope Liverpool don't make the same mistake United made when they sold Ronaldo after the 2010 WC.

He didn't do anything anything egregious, just scored a couple of goals. Unlike Ronaldo ... who deserved to be vilified.

Other than flawless kicks and calculated lobs Azurri's look much contained under the surface, well generally that is how they start their campaign and tomorrow do not see much difference to happen. Now Costa Rica may or may not be a challenge, my only fear is if it turns out to be a goalless draw because of the over defensive nature of Italian team.

Sohel
June 20, 2014, 02:07 AM
Los Ticos take on the Italians today in what promises to be an exciting match. Costa Rica play a tactically balanced game with good emphasis on putting together moves that create good chances. They have very good finishers too and should not be underestimated. Pirlo doesn't have the legs to put together the type of plays we've seen him plan on the fly and execute with perfect timing and weight in the past, but is still a force to behold on set pieces. But the Italian insistence on kicking long balls at Balotelli and hoping for him to do something with it is still a low percentage proposition for a defense as organized as Costa Rica's. I reckon the Italians will do better with a more positive approach in this match. I'll be rooting for our fellow CONCACAF nation but don't see anything other than a 1-1 draw.

Italy-Uruguay. Good to see a classic Italian move get the red. There is justice in the world. What is the Uruguaso response? Have their forwards stand around amidst a crowd of Italian defenders waiting for a jodi-laigga-jay situation. Now that's what I call imagination!

Did Suarez take money to try and lose this game? First he tries to get sent off by head-butting and biting a defender. And then he deliberately blows a breakaway opportunity by keeping the ball until he lost possession while his teammates stood around open. Cosa Nostra won't be happy.

On the other hand, for me, it was a great illustration of Carl Jung's theory on 'synchronicity': I was explaining to Abba how the Uruguayan striker Suarez has a reputation for biting poor, unsuspecting players....just as Suarez proceeds to bite an Italian defender on the shoulder. What are the chances :D

I will always dislike Italy because they never ever deserved to win the 2006 World Cup. They were extremely lucky to beat Australia 1-0 in the round of sixteens with the most controversial penalty you will ever see in the dying stages of the game. Even the Italian defender Fabio Grosso who got 'tackled' admitted years after the incident that he faked the dive. Australia were unfairly robbed in that game and then Italy went on to win the World Cup... i will never forget that. Australia had a strong team in that world cup with the likes of Kewell, Viduka, Neill and Cahill who were all class players in the EPL at that time. Australia had the ability to reach the semis and so that World Cup was a chance for them to create footballing history but the cheating Italians took it away from us. :(
