My review on Round of 16 (Matches 5 to 8)
5. Holland vs Mexico - This should be very exciting. Two different type of styles clashing. Offense vs Defense. At the end end it could be penaly kicks. Go Mehico!!
6. Costa Rica vs Greece - The new found game Costa Rica is showing... they would blow out Greece.
7. Argentina vs Swiss - Two good teams. Argentina has the edge with Messi. Don't let him go left outside the box. I would like Argentina to qualify (So USA can take them out).
8. Belgium vs USA - Last of the 8 games. This team do not have Enzo Shifo. USA moving on.

Go ahead and underestimate our Azteca brothers at your own peril. I see an upset here. Defensively solid in front of one of the two best keepers in the tournament, they're more than capable of disrupting the Orange Machine and advance. I think their team defense is strong enough to handle both Robben and Van Persie.

Los Ticos are a strong side playing wonderfully attractive and poised soccer, and I don't see them having a particularly hard time beating Greece. The Greeks don't have the quality to stop someone the class of Campbell and must once again rely on the combination of luck and embellishment to advance into the quarterfinals. They won't.

As Messi-dependent as Argentina have been, they can still handle Switzerland without too much difficulty in the end. Messi is the greatest offensive player of this century and simply cannot be contained by a nation known to produce cheese with too many holes.

This is probably the best Belgian side in history. Other than Enzo Scifo in their past, I don't recall them having so many quality players. Hazard, Fellaini and Lukaku are fine players and Kompany is one of the best defenders in the world. But the USA, especially with the return of Jozy Altidore, the threat of Julian Green on the bench, and the stellar play of Howard, Gonzalez, Beasley, Jones and Dempsey have what it takes to beat them. Go USA!

My fantasy scenario:-

1. Quarterfinals: Mexico-Costa Rica; Argentina-USA
2. Semifinal: USA-Costa Rica

Tied 0-0 at the half. Mexico did as well as at least some of us expected them to do, but those finishing issues are still there after all these years. Layun's the best example of that, but Dos Santos forced a really good save. So there's hope. Simply wonderful poise and skill from Marquez, Salcido, Guardado and Herrera, all true Aztec warriors. The way Marquez rectified his only error of the game was admirable. Vamos Aztecas!

Arjen Robben could face retrospective punishment from Fifa after the Netherlands winger admitted diving in their 2-1 World Cup win over Mexico.
The 30-year-old said he did not cheat to win a decisive injury-time penalty but told Dutch TV: "I apologise. In the first half I took a dive."
Furious Mexico coach Miguel Herrera accused Robben of diving three times.
Fifa, world football's governing body, states it can "sanction those who violate the principles of fair play".

June 30, 2014, 01:25 PM
That was a heartbreaking loss for Mexico yesterday but I'm glad Costa Rica kept the CONCACAF flame on! Mexico lost at the end by it's own failure to defend till the last minute. Until the second water-break they were sort of even with the Dutch while holding the lead. A great team like Netherlands will always change strategy when things are not working and that's what their coach did after that 2nd drinks break (as he mentioned today). The last 15 mins all Mexico was doing was kicking the ball away and letting Netherlands bring in waves and waves of attack without doing a good job of defending. I know Robben is known for diving but there was no reason for Marquez to charge when 2 other defenders are on Robben and that too inside the D-Box as Robben is running away from the goal.
As for Costa Rica, they pretty much ran out of game plan after going down to 10-men and had same psychological breakdown like Mexico. It is only because Greece has an incompetent offense that they (Costa Rica) managed to hold on for a while and finally got their groove back. They will not have that kind of luck against Netherlands so need to change that strategy.
On a separate note, this is the most lively fast-paced World Cup I have seen in the past 30 years that I've been following this event. Just the sheer number of goals and late goals are amazing. But also in low scoring match there is so much drama. For example, the first 5 matches of round-2 all looked on paper to be one-sided for the favorite team. But only Columbia managed to beat Uruguay convincingly. All others (even France today), had to wait at least till final 10-15 mins of the match to get a result.

The Swiss seem to be focused on Messi, knowing full well that you cannot stop the man. You can only hope to contain his impact by double or even triple teaming him. This will create opportunities for Higuain, the massively talented finisher who has yet to apply himself in the tournament. I see a comfortable win for the Argentines with a couple of late goals if the Swiss try and defend the whole time. I reckon they'll have a better shot with a more positive approach. The Argentine defense has been suspect and needs to be run at. Not sure if the Swiss tactics in the game will allow them to come forward, keep possession in the Argentine zone, and make those runs. Being tactically fixated on counterattack alone won't do the trick.

Sohel
July 1, 2014, 12:46 AM
Jozy Altidore comes back for the USA. If the timing of his pacy runs is there, then the Belgians should fear his finishing ability. He and Dempsey constitute our 1-2 punch provided they get the service. Sadly, Bradley has very little creative vision, so Jones will need to come forward with his. I think our defense led by Gonzalez is solid in front of Howard, one of the best shot stoppers in the world bar none. I hope Brooks also starts today to further strengthen our D. Julian Green should also be worth a try in place of Zusi. There's a good chance Fellaini suit up for Belgium and that's good news for the USA defending corner kicks. I think the USA will prevail in a close match and advance. Let's Go USA!

Ohh! Deuce Dempsey!! You had the chance to be Captain America! I expect a lot better shot from our best player on such well executed play!! I have no doubt in PK Howard would've blocked all the shots! This game deserved a PK and we almost had it!

USMNT brought the nation together again, to cheer for one team, one dream after a long time. May be outsiders won't see that as big win, I think it's a big accomplishment, something I wish cricket would do be able to do. It's true, soccer hype will burn out until the next time. But I'm sure it gained a lot of new fans.

ESPN just showed we weren't any better since 2010, same record 1-2-1, except in much, MUCH tougher group. We weren't even suppose to be in 16. Except Howard we didn't have anything left in the tank. We burned 50% of our energy in the first game against the rivals and lost a big player. Portugal was a soul crusher and we barely hung on vs the Germans. Yet managed to survive and fight 120 min. Lot on technicality and talent, not on heart.

Sohel
July 2, 2014, 02:41 AM
We played our best, most organized, balanced and attractive soccer against Ghana. Things got a little sloppy against Portugal but I'd say we were still good to watch even from a non-American perspective. It was all Germany in game 3 and pretty much all Belgium in the game that knocked us out of the tournament. Howard kept the score close.

I suppose it's all academic at this point, but I fail to see the wisdom of playing Cameron at all despite his costly turnovers and not playing Brooks. Why did Yedlin not start from the beginning? Why didn't Gonzalez, arguably our best defender alongside Brooks? Also, why no Julian Green despite the costly absence of Jozy Altidore? And what the eff is this fascination with playing Michael Bradley in a creative role when his holding ability makes him better suited to hang back whilst Jones, someone with both skill and ideas, was held back? I love what Klinsmann did with selecting the squad, and the "play to win" attitude more obvious in the first two games, but his tactical decisions left me disappointed.

Anyway, on to 2018. This has been a great tournament for our region with Mexico and USA coming close to making the quarterfinals. Too bad Honduras never recovered from early disaster but they too are a good side. I'll be rooting for Los Ticos to make it to the final from this bracket, and Brazil from the other one.

Messi can be double or triple teamed and Di Maria can be kept around the periphery, as long as you retain your structure and stay strong on the ball. We've seen that happen against the Swiss. Kompany and company are defensively solid. The Belgians are a far quicker and technically more proficient side with some excellent players. Argentine defense will have a tough time dealing with Hazard and Fellaini threading passes to Origi and Lukaku. I think Belgium will upset Argentina unless Higuain does justice to his formidable talent in this tournament. Rojo will be sorely missed at both ends of the field.

Heading into 2018, we should be one of the favorites to get out of our group regardless of who else is in our group. By 2018, guys like Julien Green, Deandre Yedlin, John Brooks, Aron Johannsson will have more experience under their belt and will be the core of this team. Josy still has a lot of time left in his hand. We also have a really talented 17 year old kid, Gedion Zelalem. Born in Germany to Ethopian parents, but grew up in US before scouted by Arsenal. I think he will end up playing for America. Klinsman will stay our coach. Beside the coach of the national team, US Soccer also gave Jurgen a director position, he is implementing a lot of youth programs through out the country to spread the game. From this point on I can only see us going up.

This US squad reminds me of our old BD team (or a better version of it) from a decade ago, the team that I had started following. No superstars, no big names, no real world class athletes but lot of heart and passion. BD lost so many close well fought games because of the gap in talent. Now, team is loaded with talents and couple of well recognized stars but no heart or passion. Only difference is USSF will only grow big while BCB will stay the same.

Agree. I guess Mijan bhai was joking! Belgium have lots of firepower in reserve than others. The individual quality available to Wilmots from the bench is hard to match. You got players like Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Vermaelen, Kevin Mirallas, Nicolas Lombaerts and Adnan Januzaj on the bench, This new generation of Belgium have very good talent, but don't have the good experience at the highest level.

Plus I read it somewhere saying the bench is not proven (defense). One key injury can change the structure of the team. I did not follow Belgium's qualification. Last game showed they are relentless. I find their goalie as an huge advantage for being 6' 6" in the penalty shootouts.

World Cup 2014: Belgium urged to 'write history' against Argentina (http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/28172121)

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has called on his players to make history on Saturday as they attempt to reach their first World Cup semi-final since 1986.

The Red Devils face Argentina in the quarter-finals in Brasilia (17:00 BST).

The last time Belgium reached the last four they lost to a team inspired by Diego Maradona, but Wilmots wants his side to play attacking football despite the threat posed by Lionel Messi.

"We can write history," Wilmots said. "We're going to play our own game."

World Cup 2014: Arjen Robben diving worries Costa Rica coach (http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/28172466)

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto says Netherlands winger Arjen Robben must be punished if he dives during Saturday's World Cup quarter-final in Salvador.

Robben, 30, apologised for diving in the last-16 win over Mexico.

"I would like to ask Fifa and the referees to watch Robben," said Pinto. "We're really worried about his diving. He has admitted doing it."

Asked if Robben should be sent off if he dives, Pinto said: "That may be the most logical solution."

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

•Argentina have won three of their previous four encounters with Belgium.
•The two World Cup meetings have produced a win apiece.
•Belgium won 1-0 in a group game at Barcelona's Camp Nou at the 1982 World Cup. Four years later Argentina won a semi-final 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
•That match at Mexico '86 is the most recent game between the sides.

Argentina

•Argentina have been eliminated in their last three World Cup quarter-finals. They lost to Germany in 2010 and Netherlands in 1998, also bowing out to the Germans in 2006 after a penalty shoot-out.
•Excluding shoot-outs, Argentina have not won a World Cup quarter-final since defeating England 2-1 in 1986.
•They have averaged 64.3% possession so far at this tournament, the highest ratio of any side prior to the quarter-finals.
•Lionel Messi has scored or assisted five of Argentina's seven goals at the 2014 World Cup. Three of his four goals have been scored from outside the penalty area.
•Argentina are unbeaten in the last 25 games in which Messi has featured (W18, D7).
•Victory against the Swiss in the last round was the first World Cup match Argentina have won in the month of July since beating the same opponents in 1966 (excludes penalty shoot-outs).

Belgium

•This is only the second time Belgium have reached the World Cup quarter-finals. They beat Spain on penalties to advance to the last four in 1986 after a 1-1 draw in Puebla.
•The Belgians have had more shots at this World Cup (83, including blocked efforts) than any other side prior to the quarter-finals.
•All six of their goals in Brazil have been scored from the 70th minute onwards, with four of those strikes netted by substitutes.
•Belgium are unbeaten in the 21 games in which goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has played for them.

The Belgians are organized, skilled, and full of serious depth and flair. They'll be dealing with a team completely depended on one player, albeit the best in the world, and a mediocre defense made worse by the suspension of Rojo. Di Maria has had a decent Wold Cup but will need to do better. Higuain hasn't and finds himself in a now-or-never situation. If the Belgians can stay poised around Messi and finish their chances, they should send Argentina packing and may even make it to the final. They know this.

Los Ticos need to play their natural game but turn it up a notch to beat the Dutch, a team that always seems to find a way to win. Won't be easy for our fellow CONCACAF member but Ruiz, Campbell and company know that they must beat the best to be the best.

I'll be rooting for Belgium and Costa Rica tonight.

I don't know why the Belgians can't play both Origi and Lukaku.
