I really wanted to see a four men pace attack against Lanka. Al Amin's expulsion is a blow to the team. There is no point including a specialist spinner, I guess we will go with 8 batsmen in this match too. However, I want to see Nasir in place of Anam for this match. Both Nasir and Soumya should practice bowling seam up.

My XI would be -

Tamim
Soumya
Momin
Mushfiq
Shakib
Riyad
Nasir
Sabbir
Mash
Rubel
Taskin

Its going to be an interesting match.

Lanka will obviously start as favourites but I think its still a very good chance for us to get a win under our belt against a decent side. Lankan bowling attack looks weak so we should aim to score big.

Also, with the pace attack we got if we can get a good start then we can definitely beat Lankans. Afghanistan gave Sri-Lanka a scare, no reason why we can't beat them.

Don't forget about Mathews. SL's best player currently.

It sucks that the match is at the MCG. In a sporting wicket I'd back our chances much more. But on a flat pitch, it's unlikely that all four of their world class batsmen will fail together.

We have to bat first and post 300 to guarantee a win. No team has chased over 300 at the MCG.

Are we capable of scoring 300 against this SL attack? No.

A score of 250 to 300 will give us a 50-50 chance of winning IF we get early wickets.

MCG pitch is getting slower and specially in 2nd innings so we might need to field 1 extra spinner leaving Mominul out.

Spinners got 5 wickets and bowled well in IND vs SA match, Taher also bowled well against IND.

Sri Lanka is struggling, but so are we. The only reason the Afghans did better against them (than against us) is because they tightened up some lose ends exposed while playing us.

I don't think we are better than SL. BUT, if the tigers can click, they can beat SL/ENG without a doubt. This is our golden opportunity. I sure hope the boys don't screw it up.

Senior players have to go beyond to make a good result out of meeting these two. I just don't see it happening with current situation. Hope I get proven wrong.

SL has been in NZ for few months now. In the process, they lost 2 tests, ODI series by 2-4 margin, lost both warm up matches (one against Zim), lost the 1st match in WC, barely won against Afg, and Malinga went from 4 months pregnant to 2 months pregnant body. Yet you still find some positive about them haha..

Lol. You guys still think we have a chance this match. Pretty funny. Unless things turn around in two days, we are losing this by a big margin! Players are demotivated, there is unrest at the camp and there is major infighting. Unless there is a way to get over all that pretty soon, I say will be very hard if not impossible to win this one.

Aren't we making the Al-Amin saga a big deal here!? Al-Amin broke the team rule, thus sent home - case closed. Why would our moral go down for this? Why players would be demotivated?

I think our journalists are making this issue into a huge one simply to make news.

It can't be good for the moral, but its not that big a deal either. Given the time they had off, they should be coming to terms with it by now. They are professional athletes, not PMS'ing teenage girls. Grab your pair and get over it. Al-amin was not even being considered for the final 11 of the game against SL from what I read. It would now be a big challenge for Mashrafe to bring that positive vive back in the team ahead of their next challenge against Sri Lanka on February 26 at the MCG.

Mashrafe himself too admitted it.
"It was not expected what happened. We were in a good shape after getting three points from two matches and the team mood was fantastic but this incident had unhinged everything. But fortunately we have enough time in our hand before the next game and hopefully everything will be okay very soon," said a dejected Bangladesh captain.

Since Al Amin hasn't been a regular fixture in our final eleven in recent times I'm hoping the negative impact won't be that bad

They are luckier than us. If both teams had say only two days rest that would've favored us immensely. Don't forget grand dads' bodies take longer to recover.

Srilanka is still probably best Asian LOI team in Australia & New Zealand in last few years. As compared to India, any team will look better but winning those 2 games against this New Zealand squad is still massive achievement where we failed to win a single game.

Winning the toss & batting first will be key at MCG (scoring above 270). Running between the wickets & ground fielding will decide the end result. Strike rotation is another important factor as boundries are rare to come by if you not impact player. (Kohli managed to hit only 8 of them in his century against Pakistan) In my opinion beating Srilanka is comparatively easy than England in these conditions.

Hi lameduck wc to bc. Tharanga is a good barsman but does he ball?

Thanks Vepu. No. He doesn't bowl. But even Jeeven Mendis hardly bowls. He was primarily playing as a batsma/slog hitter before getting injured.

i like Tharanga. What happened to him? I remember his huge partnership with Dilshan in one of the world cups.

Tharanaga started off with a lot of promising scoring tons of centuries but he was always weak outside off against the moving ball and was eventually found out. Kind of what happened with Tamim. During the last bilateral series Ind, SL, Aus in Australia, Tharanga played really well at no.6/no.7 position, And so did Chandimal. I reckon If Tharanga plays vs Bangladesh, the SL team would like something like, Dilshan, Thiriamanne, Sanga, Chandimal, Mahela, Mathews, tharanaga, Perera, lakmal, Malinga, Herath.

The passion is real high. Bangladeshis organised a rally from a western suburb (Laverton) to MCG on they match day. There will be nearly hundred cars, they named it 'Road to MCG'. They informed police to send patrol cars, made a deal with MCG parking authority for cheaper($8 instead of $10) mass parking, organised a little gathering at Federation square offering free face painting and then rallying to the MCG. They are calling it 'Gontobbo'. Despite all these I fear it will be a small crowd. Only 27,000 Bangladeshis live in Melbourne.

I just checked the BD and Ind population in Aus. There are only 28k BD people in Aus, based on 2011 census. Let's round it to 50k for 2015. Even then that won't make MCG green and red. But what about other Melbourne residence besides the Lankans? They should all be going! It's a freaking WC game, forget which teams are playing! Stop being so ignorant Australia!

There are 300k Indians in Aus. 100k of em were in MCG. Thats freaking awesome!

If 1/3rd of the stadium can be filled with Bangladeshis, I will be dancing around. Because that'll be around 25K-30K, the capacity our Mirpur stadium. 50+K Bangladeshis on the ground ain't happening, but if it does, rest assured, we will go for a full tour there very soon.

yeah the last population survey had Bangladeshis at 28k in 2011. However at the sydney boishakhi mela in 2013 I think, we had 20K+, so by now I think we can get up to 30K in an event at a major city in straya.

I am dying to go to Melbourne, I can't though as I have work and stuff. I will probably quit job if not allowed to go to the Quarters if Bangladesh does make it. I will go no matter what! But guys, about the empty stadium and seats, do you know Australia is not even showing the world cup on free-to-air TV? You don't know the level of frustration it is causing here. Apparently cricket australia couldn't strike a deal or something with ICC. This is plain ridiculous, the hype here about the world cup with the Aussies is pretty much lower than the BBL which was televised. Only the Aussie matches plus the semis and couple here there are shown. Just plain ridiculous

G-man
February 24, 2015, 11:26 PM
^^ yeah this lack of broadcast on free tv channels is just plain lame. Australia is very self centered in these ways, only cares about its own matches...in anything. In the fifa world cup, they obviously show their games, and some cemis/final...but once they are out, they don't show anything. Same deal with olympics.

It may be that CA couldn't strike a deal but I think it's more they didn't want to. Too costly. this board can't afford anything.

Australia is one of the best in cricket and WC is not broadcasted nationally? Now I'm not as mad at ESPN for making it PPV for us lol! This WC has been getting lot of coverage in the US. Few stories and games made the headlines on ESPN front page. Scores are on the top tab ahead of live NHL and NBA (that's big!). Cricinfo now has its own section on the main page, at least for the duration of the WC. Highlights are making the Sportscenter regularly, in the morning and at night. Scores are flashing on the bottomline. And of course the usual Top10 plays. I think all these equal the live broadcast of T20 WC14 final on TV, which was pretty big itself. But didn't think 50-over would get this much love.

For UK, Skysports a cable channel or over the air? i.e equivalent of ESPN?

The pitch seems generates more pace in the evening, thus, bowling second should be our target if we win the toss. Put a big total and create pressure on the lankans...and bowl tight and on target with late swings....

Srilanka is the only top eight team against whom we have won two must win matches to reach tournament final. One was in the tri series 2009 and another was in the asia cup 2012. So,why not this time?

The way I look at it, we our best bet to secure a stop in QF is to beat SL or Eng. Both are possible, and both are going to be hard. Sure, we'll get another chance with NZ, but I'd rather not wait for that.

However, both SL and Eng are better team than we are on a general day. On a exceptional day, we can beat both. So, the question is, can we deliver an exceptional performance today?

Here is what we can learn from IRE to win against SL:

(1) Don't panic. IRE was 94-4 at one state, but they did not panic. They batted calmly and they had the belief that they can win.

(2) Do not give up. If two or three wickets fall in the top, do not give up. Even if SL bat first and score 300, do not give up. Even if Sanga or Mahel starts taking control, do not give up. Keep fighting and show character.

(3) Do your basics right.

(4) Run hard between wicket.

(5) Keep wicket for late hitting. Try not to lose more than one wicket in the first 20 overs.

(6) Believe you can.

(7) Be the best when it comes to fielding. Save as many runs as you can.

50 overs is actually a very long time to bat, what i've learnt is that teams that have their main batsmen in the last 10 overs can score 100+ in them easily. Heck you've got teams scoring 20-25 runs each in the final few overs alone

So game plan should be to get to 200 by 40th over and keep wickets in hand. Partnerships are so key in the 50 over game

1pm A big day for Bangladesh. The first time they are going to play at the iconic MCG. Their opposition can be their inspiration. Sri Lanka got their first MCG match in 1985, and beat Australia
Also a chance for Sri Lanka to post their first win at MCG against a team other than Australia. In the more important context of this World Cup, Bangladesh will feel Sri Lanka are vulnerable given how they struggled against Afghanistan, a team that lost comprehensively to Bangladesh. For Sri Lanka this might just be the last banana peel. They will back themselves to beat Scotland, and if they get through Bangladesh they are all but through to the quarter-finals. Also Sri Lanka have won their last 15 matches against Bangladesh

The toss was a double edge sword today. Ideally you'd want to bat first on this pitch and post a good total. But then again we rarely win against G8 batting first and SL has the batting to chase down big scores.
