Grameen lose network on Biman flight

Bangladesh Biman ran down title-rivals Grameenphone by three wickets to hand them their first defeat as Bashundhara returned to winning ways outclassing minnows Gazi Tank by 37 runs on a rain-hit Tuesday. The other scheduled match of the day, MM Ispahani versus BCB Development Squad, was rained out after around five hours of play.

Flying high
Biman (184/7) beat Grameenphone (183) by three wickets

The National flag carriers earned their second vital victory, and third in total, when they chased down an ample Grameen total of 183 runs with three overs to spare. Biman defeated fellow contenders Bashundhara earlier in the tournament. More spectacularly, none of the Biman batsmen made any major contributions as left-handed opener Humayun Kabir top scored 39 while veteran Jahangir Alam scored 25. U/19 stalwart Mahmudullah Riyad took three Biman wickets but received no assistance from his illustrious partners, Khaled Mahmud, Monjurul Islam, Alok Kapali and Abdur Razzak, all decorated in national colours.

Earlier, Humayun was the pick of the Biman bowlers with figures of four for 34. Mushfiqur Rahman, the lone national player in the Biman squad, claimed three wickets to restrict the opponents to a modest total despite a good start. Grameen, with two wins and a tie till date, began on a high as Anisul Hakim and Shahriar Hossain scored 83 runs for the opening partnership. However, as both departed on 48 and 34 respectively, Grameen lost grip of the game with only Alok Kapali making 27 runs.

Naimur lets it rip
Bashundhara (228/8) beat Gazi Tank (191) by 37 runs

Former national skipper Naimur Rahman made full use of a rain-hit track when he returned with figures five for 42 to help Bashundhara bounce back after a demoralising defeat to Biman in their previous match. Enamul Hoq provided apt support with two for 24, as Gazi Tank fell 37 runs short of their winning target on 191 runs.

Earlier, Bashundhara scored 228 for eight in their stipulated 50 overs with two half-centuries from Jamal Faisal and Sabbir Khan. Opener Jamal scored 71 runs off 78 while the lanky all-rounder Sabbir hit 55.

Early end on return
BCB Development XI (152) vs Ispahani (33/3) in 10 overs. Match washed out

Former national seamer Safiuddin Ahmed had a dry comeback as finished with figures of none for 26 in six overs, however, his team, had a good day with the ball when they dismissed development squad for a meagre 152. Rain, however, foiled their ploy after ten overs of batting when they reached a precarious 33 for three with surprise opener Minhajul Abedin, Mahabubul Karim and Sadid Hossain all returning on poor scores. Earlier, Raihanuddin Arafat claimed five wickets while Sohel Ahmed and Rezaul Karim took two wickets apiece to wrap up the development squad in 40.4 overs.

As the galleries at the Bangabandhu National Stadium spent another barren and silent day on Tuesday, the inability of the ongoing Corporate Cricket League to attract spectators has been forced into light. Bashundhara, took field with a star-studded contingent including former national captains Akram Khan and Naimur Rahman, former national stars Enamul Huq (sr), Hasibul Hossain and Al Shahriar as well as current national team member Faisal Hossain.

However, even when Naimur finished with a five wicket haul, there was hardly any applause for these celebrated players. One suspects, if the same players had donned the jersey of premier league side, the scenario could have been drastically different. Prior to the tournament, the organisers had hoped that the low price of tickets, Tk. 5 and Tk. 1, as well as a raffle draw attached to the ticket, would have encouraged fans to make a show at the stadium. After one week, the ploy appears an abject failure.

At present, it is only the employees and officials of the large corporate houses taking part in the competition, who also have their offices near to the arena, are the ones decorating the field. Araf Apparels, one of the more successful sides till date, is generally the noisiest team with a formidable contingent of factory workers gracing their matches.

“The average sale is about Tk seventeen hundred per day. The highest purse was collected on the first day, Tk twenty eight hundred,” said Ali Hossain, the co-ordinator of the competition. He further clarified that a large portion of ticket sales is affected by the raffle draw, most of who do not bother to make an appearance or stay very long. Another large chunk is taken by the employees and officials of the participating teams who usually occupy the club house and the VIP enclosure. Thus, merely a few hundred actual fans occupy the galleries. Khandaker Jamiluddin, the chief of the tournament committee, has an explanation for the poor turnout.

“First, the political situation is not favourable for the spectators, second, the people are still to realise what the competition is all about and third, the season is not suitable for the spectators to watch a cricket match,” said Jamiluddin.

While many watch the match to secure a prize in the raffle draw, sponsored by the Bashundhara Group, there are people who enter the stadium only out of curiosity. Mushtaq Ahmed did not know about the prizes involved with the tickets.

“I only entered the stadium to see the standard of cricket once I found out about the low-priced tickets. The cricket is not very entertaining,” said a disappointed Mushtaq.

Someone tell me why? Why, for all the reasons qouted above, did they go ahead with such a great idea that now seems to beill-timed and slowly being botched up.
I suspect usual BD herd mentality:

1 Someone proposes a good idea.
2 Everyone, I mean everyone, jumps in the bandwagon.
3 No one plans the whole deal with any thought of future in mind
4 Things drift towards failure.
5 Someone gets blamed
6 On to next gimmick

Well, that's all for now. I will compose my thoughts elsewhere.

Wicketkeeper Hasibul Haque hopes that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will help him recover from a serious head injury.

The 18-year-old Khulna stumper, hit on the head by a ball during practice on April 8 at his home ground, lay unconscious for three days in hospital before being released.

His friend Ripon appealed to the BCB to arrange better treatment for him while talking to journalists after a Corporate Cricket League match between Bashundhara and Gazi Tank at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

A blazing century by Mazhar gave Dhaka Metro Blues a massive 91-run victory against Barisal Division in the second phase of the under-17 development cricket tournament at the City Club ground yesterday.

Mazhar blasted four fours and an incredible nine sixes on way to 102 off 71 balls as Dhaka Metro amassed 316-6 in the stipulated 50 overs. Sakib was the other notable scorer with 80.

The massive score was however revised to 286 in 40 overs due to rain. But that was still beyond Barisal who eventually reached 195 for eight.
