Tigers clinch famous win
Will go through to semifinals if Australia lose today - Al-Amin

http://www.thedailystar.net/frontpage/collapse-harms-tigers-chances-1418002

Amazing! Unbelievable! The Tigers roared at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff in a more spectacular fashion than 12 years ago. This is called coming of age. They looked dead and buried when they were brought to their knees at 12 for three and then 33 for four, chasing New Zealand's 265 for eight in what was a potential quarterfinal of the Champions Trophy.

(From 33 for four Bangladesh batsmen Shakib Al Hasan (L) and Mahmudullah Riyad fashioned a spectacular, record 224-run partnership to overhaul New Zealand's 265 in their Champions Trophy Group A match at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff yesterday. Photo: Reuters)

Game over? Not quite yet. Out in the middle were Bangladesh's two members of the fantastic five -- Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad. The problem with Shakib is that he does not curb his attacking instinct in whatever situation his team is in. Mahmudullah had just hit some sort of form in the Ireland tri-series but could not still be the sitting duck that he was in New Zealand against pace earlier this year.

But sit tight. The tournament, which has so far been dogged by rain, has already got underway with two spectacular results. Pakistan beat top-ranked South Africa and Sri Lanka chased down India's imposing 321 in some style over the last couple of days.

So the caravan needed continuity and something more special. It was really something special that Shakib and Mahmudullah delivered after that opening burst from the Kiwi pace bowlers. Shakib scored an imperious 114 and Mahmudullah struck a magnificent 102 not out as Bangladesh eclipsed the Black Caps' 265, which nobody believed could be possible after that early mayhem.

The fifth wicket partnership of 224 runs between the left-right combination was something heavenly in the context of Bangladesh cricket and something extraordinary in the context of world cricket. It was the highest partnership for any wicket in the annals of Bangladesh's ODI history and the second highest in the Champions Trophy.
But who cares for stats. It's a partnership the 6000-odd Bangladesh fans in green will remember as long as they live. And, would you believe it, the partnership did not have a single blemish? Shakib is always regarded as a special breed and his authoritative innings -- mixed with caution and aggression -- was a truly special one. The southpaw showed signs of hitting form against Australia on June 5 before his innings was cut short by an injudicious call from umpire Nigel Llong.

Yesterday, he did not allow any delivery to hit his pads. It was only on 99 when he became ultra aggressive. Mahmudullah on the other hand was as cool as ice. The right-hander also showed that he was no longer a sitting duck against short-pitched deliveries.

They way they complemented each other in that magnificent stand appeared as if they wanted their scores to stayed in synchrony. They reached their 90s almost at the same time, strolled through their 90s also at the same pace. They were actually tied on 98, before Shakib took a single and completed his seventh one-day century and probably the most memorable with a six over long-leg. It was a top-edge off James Milne. Shakib was in murderous mood after completing his ton off 111 balls.

That six left Bangladesh needing another 17 runs off 24 balls. Shakib was in a hurry to finish the chase -- hitting Trent Boult for consecutive boundaries. He lofted the first one over mid-off and the next one through the covers. Thankfully he did not connect the next ball -- he was bowled -- because the way he was going about his business it would have denied Mahmudullah a deserved century.

When Shakib departed, Bangladesh needed nine runs off 21 deliveries. Mosaddek Hossain dabbed a couple followed by a single down to third man, which allowed Mahmuddlah to complete his century. He did it in style, pulling a Boult short ball down to the square-leg boundary for four.

Two runs off 18 balls. It was time to bask in a memorable victory, and the celebration started in Cardiff and all the way to Bangladesh when Mosaddek steered the second ball from Milne to the third man boundary for four. Bangladesh posted 268 for five and won the game by five wickets with 16 balls to spare.

Will this win guarantee Bangladesh's place in the semifinals. Will England be able to beat Australia today? Let's forget about the future. Let's celebrate a magnificent victory fashioned by two magnificent Tigers -- Shakib and Mahmudullah.

Shakib, Mahmudullah heroics seal epic win
Quamrul Hassan

A record partnership between Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh beat New Zealand by five wickets on Friday to seal one of the biggest comebacks in the Tigers' history. The duo, who both hit centuries, made 224 in the fifth wicket, the highest ever Bangladesh partnership in an ODI, to scale down 266 with 16 balls to spare.

However, the beginning of the chase in this crucial Champions Trophy game was one of the worsts. Southee trapped in-form Tamim Iqbal leg before in the second ball of the innings and then made Sabbir Rahman give a catch behind the wicket in the third over. Tamim's opening partner Soumya Sarkar was also trapped leg before by Southee in the fifth over, and when Adam Milne bowled Mushfiqur Rahim with the score on 39, Tigers fans were fearing a humiliating defeat.

Unmoved Shakib and Mahmudullah rose to the occasion though, bringing a win that kept their hopes of qualifying for the semifinal intact. Anything less than a win for Australia against England on Saturday will see the Tigers through.

Man-of-the-match Shakib smashed 114 from 115 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six, while Mahmudullah made 102 in 107 deliveries, thanks to eight fours and two sixes.

Mahmudullah silenced his critics with a controlled century. When Trent Boult bowled Shakib, the match had already been all but won. The Tigers needed only nine then, and Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain just completed the formalities.

Earlier, Mosaddek Hossain shocked New Zealand with three wickets in three overs as the Kiwis were restricted to 265 for 8 despite a great beginning. Openers Martin Guptill and Luke Ronchi made a decent start for the Kiwis, who opted to bat first, before Taskin made Ronchi give a catch to Mustafiz, with the score on 46.

Rubel soon joined the party, trapping Guptill leg before, who made 33 in 35 balls, with four fours and a six. Ross Taylor and Williamson then added 83 to stamp the Kiwis' authority in the game, which was derailed by a run out. It meant Williamson's innings ended on 57 and although Taylor (67) and Neil Broom looked set, Mosaddek turned the table.

The Kiwis were 201 for 3, but Mosaddek removed Broom, James Neesham and Corey Anderson in quick succession to leave them on 240 for 7. In the end, all New Zealand could manage was 265 for 8. Taskin bagged two wickets to play his part.

The Tigers will have to return home should Australia win tomorrow, but this is a win that speaks volumes on Bangladesh's rise among the game's elites.

http://amar-desh24.com/bangla/index.php/details/sports/9902

Manohar: Waiting game for Bangladesh

Staff Reporter
Birmingham, June 9, 2017

http://s2.firstpost.in/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Shashank-Manohar-ICC-Getty.jpg

In a press interview, ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar issued a statement noting: "Look it is now a waiting game for Bangladesh. They have proved themselves well and all they can do is hope for the best in tomorrows highly anticipated clash [between Australia and England]."

"I mean," he continued: "The press has dubbed this match as Shashank Redemption and that is not unjust. However as Navojot Singh Sidhu tweeted this [Friday] morning "@BCBTigers Probably u weren't expecting Daler Mehendi to congratulate you, but you pulled off the game the century. #ct2017"

Meanwhile, umpire Chris Gaffney, set to officiate tomorrow's match, noted that last time he was so nervous was in Durban in 2006 when someone put a naga chili in his curry surreptitiously with a 'relatively high Scoville Index'. He also added that should he be forced to stay awake all night, the caffeine in his covfefe may act as laxative and he is 'leaving nothing to chance' after ordering a 'buggy full of Tums' from English Costco.

New Zealand team, who are set to leave tonight are trying to leave this issue behind, have made special request for aisle seats with leg space, vegetarian meal and in flight features of highest lowest rated movies of Govinda from early 90s era.

Although Shamim Chowdhury was not there to comment, but Ian Bishop who is close friends with Athar Ali Khan who is close friends with an area man in Banani Sector 8, Road 9 near his flat, spotted Mr. Chowdhury in a 'curiously dressed regalia of Henry VIII costume (http://spartacus-educational.com/00henry86.jpg)' to show his 'full support for England Lions' ergo Tigers.

The world called it the mother of all miracles when little Bangladesh beat the mighty Australians in Cardiff in 2005. Twelve years later, in a toe-to-toe battle with New Zealand at the same ground, Bangladesh staged a comeback for the ages, winning by five wickets after getting nearly blown away by their pace attack. What he has done is sheer miracle. Bond with two rehab quit cricket. How many did Mash do? His presence on the field is a miracle. If cricket was played with shorts every time a close shot of his knee scars would bring tears to the opposition supporters.

Well deserved praise with his tactics of Mosaddek. 10-1-45-0 on a pressure cooker game tells the story of his ability even with slow medium pace.

Jessore and Mymensingh. That's how the AnandaBazar article starts haha.

Noticed in the past too that they are very particular about regions within BD and knows quite a lot. But Shak is from Magura..

'ICC Champions Trophy 2017: Shakib Al Hasan's atypical knock testament to new-found temperament'
Devdutt Kshirsagar
10 June 2017

""I don't have words, honestly," Bangladesh's batting coach Thilan Samaraweera said about Shakib Al Hasan's ridiculous batting performance against Sri Lanka on the second day of the first Test in March 2017.

Lakshan Sandakan had just dismissed two Bangladesh batsman off successive balls and Shakib entered fray to face the hat-trick ball and what did he do? He swept it in front of square on the leg side for a boundary. Another wicket fell in the next over. The Tigers had to bat out just a couple of overs but Shakib was hell bent on displaying his deranged version. He cut a chinaman as late as he could, top edged a pacer and almost chopped on too. Out of the seven balls that he had faced before stumps on Day 2, three were half chances gifted to the opposition and oh, not to forget he was also dropped. If a parent wanted to explain to his kid, what irresponsibility and absent-mindedness meant, this was the moment."
