Hi,

I was trying to see what methods people use to call Bangladesh from abroad.

Here are some I use or am aware of in the UK:

App+internet based: Viber and Imo. basically free, but the other person has to have the app and connected to internet. This is my first port of call but the people I call dont always have internet on.

Viber Out: I bought credit and call Bangladesh if option above doesnt work. It charges £0.05 pm.

Direct- Its quite expensive and my operator o2 charges £1.50 pm (last time checked). Have used this in emergencies or by mistake.

Access Number: You dial a particular access number and then you dial your desired number. Havent used this for 3 to 4 years as I find it unreliable and doesnt always connect. Its £0.05 pm both mob and landline.

Preferential Rates: Operator EE has some preferential rates for their customers Its £0.05 pm for mob and slightly cheaper for lanline, but you have to pay a fee of £5 per month just to get this rate.

Mobile Calling cards: Havent used one for 7 years and not sure they are around. Very unreliable too. Used to buy loads when I was a student.

Specific Sim: I used to temporarily use a sim called Vectone. Its deal was amazing. £10 i got 500 minutes which I could use either for UK or BD (other countries like USA/Australia too). Plus 3GB of data. Only snag was top up was a pain as its not avaliable everywhere. I usually get this for anyone visiting UK. Internet not 4G.

I wonder who you call in BD. Maybe Gamini De Silva?

I use LocalPhone. They give you a direct number and I think it is 2 cents per minute.

Not sure how much it charges per minute but my parents use MobileVOIP if the other person doesn’t have Viber/WhatsApp.

In UK there used to be "free" services too which I had used in the past. first you would sign up to this website and input the phone number you desire to call. they then generate a UK mobile number associated with that specific phone number.

You save that number and keep using it. It only uses your UK minutes. Sadly that service is not available any more or my operator's minute doesnt cover it and will charge me

I use rebtel. It may be 1 or 2 cents higher than the local cards but it is much convenient. You can log into the website from any device, add a number whenever you like. Besides it is not location specific. You can call to many different countries, whichever you need. You can add as many numbers you want and it will give you corresponding local number. There is no time constraint on usage, once paid it is available for years. So your money is never lost.

Other than that was using Skype couple years back and currently Viber and FB Messenger a lot.

First preference is Whatsapp for audio/video
I used to use a website where you entered the BD no. and a local UK no. would be generated. This was only free for 10 mins. So, I would hang up before the ten mins. was up and re-dial lol

I have an old Virgin mobile contract where calling 0845/0870 numbers are free. There is another website I now use which generates 0870 local numbers for BD numbers. I use this now :D

On 3 network it’s 2/3p per minute to Bangladesh. You have to dial a code first. o2 is 3p too (with a code or international card). I used to call with both networks direct, pretty good. I also used TalkHome back in 2014/15 to call BD, £10 gave 1k minutes or something (not sure if that’s still available).
