Saudis had 60% possession and no shots on goal
Ruskis had 40% and 4 shots on goal

Well I am guessing a new Saudi coach will be decided tonight

Haha

The idea is completely different. If FIFA follows ICC's method of ranking-based qualification, then it would be only South America and Europe playing in the WC. But the love and craze for football is all over the world, especially in Africa and Asia, it's comparable to Europe & SA.

But not to see Italy, Netherlands, Chile etc. in this WC is saddening. I'm an Azzuri fan.

Still crazy to think that USA, Holland, Italy and Chile are not playing this one! Ghana as well. Very used to seeing all these teams at the big stage.

Chile and USA were supposed to be on the come up. Holland and Italy are staples. And you always think of Ghana and Nigeria when thinking African football.

I am starting to think Bangladesh might be only country after Argentina to have the most true support for Argentina. Baffles my mind.

Roey Haque
June 20, 2018, 01:33 AM
I think it's great! Why should the greatest footballer of all time belong to Argentina only? Bangladeshis can make him their own.

But my theory is when club football started to become less popular in Bd, Argentina Brazil rivalry replaced the Abahani Mohamedan rivalry in the fans' mind.

Anyway, Messi should consider coming to Bd again and spending more time. That would be something.

.
I think there is a merit to this thought. I think Bangladeshis in general are superior in football knowledge and appreciate good soccer. I think they are true soccer lovers and hence goes full force with their support.

This arg brazil support maybe a bit over the top but I have no problem with true messi backing.

Actually the only official jersey that i bought is also an Argetinian jersey. My knock out stage games are catered toward watching Argentina because of messi eventhough i probably can support other teams more. And I am starting to think why? and i think it's just to watch the greatest footballer ever who also happens to be playing in our time.

Some of my buddies are making fun of me for mexico topping Germany as they know i like how the germans play but I am trying to tell them I loved that game and appreciated how mexico exposed the defending champs. I think a lot of Bangladeshis just love good football.. but then u have facebook bangladeshis many of which are there for the craze - probably can't appreicate the finesse of messi dribbling or the athleticism/timing of CR7.

To be honest, I am enjoying How Ronaldo is playing this time. Love the way he celebrates. Whatever Ronaldo is doing at age 33 is no joke. He has incredible speed. Lets go CR7

Messi is popular in BD mostly because he is from Argentina. I doubt he would have been that popular had he been from lets say England or Germany. Arg in general has a huge fanbase in BD Thanks to Maradona. Riquelme, Ortega, Batistuta were also very popular back in the days long before Messi joined the party. And I am sure Messi is more popular in BD than CR7 simply because of his Arg background. Not because he is currently the best footballer in the world.

of course we are. Bengal as a region has always been very football oriented. We embraced cricket much much later compared to other regions in the subcontinent.

It's a shame we don't take football seriously now. If countries like Panama, Saudi, Peru etc. can make it, why can't we at least get close?

If I were BFF president, I would select 100 or so little kids and send them to top youth academies across Europe and Latin America. We can get those big clubs to do some scouting and sponsor 4-5 kids in their academies. Heck even send them to some ghetto neighborhoods in Brazil.

I get goosebumps watching our cricket team in WC. Imagine in football WC! The feeling will be infinite times better.

If I had to choose between winning cricket WC or getting into football WC, I would choose the latter.

As much as i love cricket.. I always wanted football to be the number 1 sports in the country. That would have given Bangladesh a very unique identity amongst Asian subcontinent. Sadly the rise of cricket meant the fall of football.

I remember during early 90's I couldn't sleep the night before a Abahani Mohameddan game. How much I loved Sabbir, Rahimov K.Hamid etc .. My dad never let me go to the stadium than because of the threat of violence between the two sets of fans. For the past 20 years, I dont even know when the Premier league games are taking place.

I know people disagreed with me when I said Belgium is a serious contender.... I really think they can do it this time. This is their golden generation.
Also I underestimated England. They are my no 1 team and I hope these young bunch could do better than their golden generation.

India with so much money and talent is trying very hard and still cant even come close to teams like Japan, Iran or South Korea. LOL. And we on the other hand cant even beat Bhutan now. Back in the days teams like Bhutan, Maldives , Sri Lanka were walk in the park for us. We were very competitive against China, Japan, Thailand.

Munna was the best defender in South Asia and one of the best in Asia. Kaiser Hamid was also very good defender. Shabbir was our Maradona, Salam and Aslam were great striker. I was fortunate enough to see them play. And have read that The magician Samad once challenged the referee about the height of the goal post as 2 of his shots hit the bar. Good old days.

I do not mind rising of cricket. But I do mind how we have forgotten about football. Like everything else in Bangladesh, we destroy anything that is capable of bringing good results. Be it Jute industry, chess or football.

There wasn't much hype this time around with the England team.
I don't know why I feel they could do something special here...

If they win the Group, they face any of Japan, Senegal, Poland and Colombia...
You would expect them to walk over them... and reach the QF..

QF is tough... they could face team like Germany or Brazil...

I share the same sentiments with everyone who have expressed this longing for soccer (football). It's not fair at all how football had to be sacrificed in order for cricket to flourish. I have already discussed a lot of it on the official football thread here. Hope to dig into it a bit more in the coming podcast.

Hahaha alhamdulillah i suggested this idea at the get together ;) only if it is implemented. Definitely doable. Only problem is to see the results we need to wait 15-20 years can we wait that long? If we can wait 20 years for cricket i think so...

India (with the exception of Northeast region) did not have a big football culture. Cricket and Hockey was ingrained in their psyche and that's why both Ind/Pak dominated hockey and now cricket. While football only remained in obsession in certain regions.

Cricket is so dominant that there has been at least a dozen British Asians of Ind/Pak descent playing for England team. But maybe 1-2 players at best playing in 20 teams across the entire EPL. Interestingly, there is a Bangladeshi descent player in Leicester City now.

But we had a strong football culture and failed to capitalize on it. Money/Investment doesn't is important but doesn't guarantee sustained top level performance (USA/China/India).

We completely gave up on football. Nowadays the obsession is only around WC and the upper middle class "cool" kids following EPL/La Liga and fighting on social media about Barca/Real/Man U/Bayern etc.
