First let me say it out loud: I am biased and my bias is for Imrul Kayes :-|

But I think he has been the best opening partner for TIK.

Let the stats speak: During 2015-2018 period, Imrul TIK partnership produced highest opening partnership average, even better than TIK Soumya.

During 2012-2014 period, Imrul played 2 or 1 match as opener.

Since we have not found any dependable opening partner for TIK, Imrul should be TIK's opening partner in 2019 WC. Plus Imrul has a good track record in England.

Tamims best opening partner would be liton if he can be a bit more consistent. Liton is aggressive which would work well. Plus he is not the slashy type which most of our openers are.

Both liton and anamul can play the jayasuriya role

Averaging 30 with strike rate over 100 should not be difficult with the way both hit

That's good enough if Tamim can keep going at average of 60 with SR of 80

The problem is:

Anamul and Liton will play a quick cameo of 30+ innings one every four times. Remaining three times, they will be out for single digits.

As for Imrul, he will get out for single digit in one innings, two innings in 10s/20s, and one innings in 30s/40s. All with strike rate of max 70.

We have to decide what mediocre option we select.

To be fair, Anamul is capable of scoring big. He just needs one big knock to get his confidence back. We can also try Mominul as an opener.

The confidence will do nothing if his overall batting technique is terrible, he will fail more often than not. And its not like he debuted yesterday, there is a reason Hathurusingha never thought highly of him and instead gave chances to Soumya who had much more average domestic performance.

Some are getting disillusioned by his domestic or U19 numbers which are not always a good criteria to judge players, many domestic and U19 bullies around the world never made it in International Cricket and our domestic cricket is hardly the most competitive. Litton has also great domestic numbers and hasn't received half the chances Anamul has gotten so far.

Only watching Anamul play will tell you how terrible he is, we are wasting time and a spot which could have been given to another promising young player

Imrul sabotaged his chance to play in WC'19 by refusing to play A-team matches in Ireland-

I think it's high time we stop looking at the opening position as some kind of special position where you cannot put certain players and play some youngsters like Mosaddek and Shanto. At least in ODIs.

Dilshan was once a middle order player who didn't shine much but once he moved to opening slot he was a different player, the management need to stop looking for certain players to open only and push mosaddek or Shanto up the order to give them enough balls to play, the opening position grants them more freedom to express their talent than coming in at number 6 or 7 trying to score quick runs

I think whatever decision we make we have to stick with it till the next World Cup. Don’t think Imrul has that edge like he used to.

Liton could open and he could possibly add 30-40 runs but you can’t expect him to play long innings. IMO put Shabbir to start if you don’t want to go with Liton.

Or send Shakib to open, he's basically doing it anyway

IMO put Shabbir to start if you don’t want to go with Liton.

This is one of the worst things that has happened in our cricket - promoting a player who has played well for a while to a position that he is not suited for.

We tried Ashraful as opener and no 3. The result was a failure.

We tried Imrul and Zunaid and other openers as no 3. The result was a failure.

We tried Shabbir and Nasir at no 3. The result was a failure.

We tried Shakib at no 3. Even though he has done well so far, he has done well only against relatively weaker opponents and on pitches that are similar to subcontinent pitches.

As Isam said in the front page interview with Rinathq, no 3 should never be another opener. Similarly, no 3 should also not be any other player except a real no 3.

For a successful ODI team, each and every players role must be well defined. No player should play at a position as a stop gap measure.

Look at Team India at the moment. Strong team but lost ODI series to England. Why? Because they have no 1, 2, 3 very well defined but they are experimenting with 4-7 positions and the result was loss against a quality opposition. Whereas look at England - roles are well defined and players come and execute their role. When roles are well defined, each one can play fearlessly according to his talent, and even if two or three players fail in the process in a match, the team as a whole can withstand that and can still win.

For our ODI team, some roles are set for WC. Some are not.

1. Tamim
2.
3.
4. Mushfiqur
5. Shakib
6.
7. Mahmudullah
8.
9. Mashrafe
10. Rubel
11. Mustafizur

Our problem is 2, 3, 6, 8 are not well defined and so far seniors have covered up. But if we want to do well in WC, we must fix those positions and make players ready.

might be worth trying this line up and giving it sometime before WC:

1 tamim
2 liton/soumya
3 shanto
4 mosaddek
5 shakib
6 mushy
7 riyad

TBH riyad and mushy are probably the best finishers BD have atm, mosaddek imo has to be at 3 or 4 or he isn’t in the xi, shanto might be able to open but he’s the closest thing BD has to a specialist no 3 who’s got anywhere near the national team. Shakib is not a great finisher which is why I placed him above mushy and riyad.

Only other batsman I might want to see before World Cup who isn’t in the squad right now might be zakir if he impresses in the A team, I’m not saying discard sabbir but we have no choice but to try other line ups at this point, he hasn’t been firing and other options need to be worked out before WC rolls around.

Hopefully I didn’t miss anybody, apologise if I did.

Our success in ODI cricket is artificial and on the back of senior cricketers. Our domestic cricket did not improve as much as the national team did. The seniors are where they are after years of mediocre performances but they were lucky that we were at no 10 when they started (with low expectstion from fans). These guys developed the hard way which by playing and struggling against the best overseas. The younger players right now do not have that luxury like mushfiq or ryad had in their early days. The current situation demands that they walk into the side and perform. This would only happen when our domestic cricket standard actually improves. More investments is needed in raising the standard of DPL, with more foreign fast bowlers playing for the clubs, harder pitches and competitive teams. That would perhaps give enough foundation to a youngster coming into the side.

I can't believe that there can be a call for Imrul solely based on his opening partnership with TIK. Even if that's the case, should we drop Imrul when Tamim is injured (based on the same partnership logic)?

By 2019 WC, he will be over 32 and his S/R will fall under 60. He shouldn't be mentioned for any format of cricket.

SS is way better. We shouldn't have tried him in Test. It's high time that we sticked to some players meant for certain formats only.

Imrul was always a stop-gap solution and he will remain just that. He never inspired the confidence amongst people and selectors to consistently back him therefore I do not see him as being the solution to our opening woes. I hate to tell you that I told you so but I indeed told you so.

Win or lose, MaShaAllah my boy made us proud today.

Imrul Kayes 72* (89 balls) :applause: :big_hug: :flag:

The problem with our selectors are

- they often ignore the numbers all together
- they have inherent bias against little older players
- they select players for the wrong format

It was a mistake to choose Imrul for T20 or test. He was always a good ODI player - especially for the supporting role to Tamim.

The only other ODI opener who is better than Imrul is an in-form Soumya.

One commentator put it nicely in Cricinfo:

Tasmeem: "If you compare the average, you will find that Imrul has a decent average as an opener. His only problem is he can't convert his starts, which has been hampering him throughout his career. But the problem is that others don't even get the starts."

Before you bring out your knives attacking his strike rate, know that Imrul did best what was within his ability after coming at 5 down.

I thought he was part of our core team here... the fav 5 +imrul. However

A slight problem with his selection now is that the way tamim has evolved. Before tamim used to be attacking so Imruls role as sedating was vital but these days tamim is an anchor and if imrul also plays slowly - we will always never be able to take advantage of early restrictive fielding and will lag behind in run rate... if it's a 240 ish pitch great but if (more common these days) if its a 320 pitch then tamim imrul combination may become a burden.

England pitches are usually high scoring ones. So Imrul should make the 15 but not sure if he should make the 11 if rest are firing. Sarker as a partner to tamim is more appealing in this format because of his aggressiveness when tamim takes forever to build.

Liton and esp Mosaddek are our best test prodigies, and we should persist with them in that format (instead of Sabbir and Soumya, facepalm). Not sure about Liton in ODIs, but he might be the best option (who else has 40+ avg in List A?).

While his recent performance has been impressive compared to other openers. Out of these 15, 7 innings are in sub-continent conditions with an excellent average of 71.16 with 3 50's and 1 century. In the other 8 innings (outside Asia) his average is 30 with two 50s against NZ & SA.

looking at Imrul's stats in recent years, why was he dropped in the first place? His last ODI series was in SA and he scored a 50+ score there. But in BD's next ODI series he is dropped. Was he injured at the beginning of this year?

I think Thinking about WC right now is really looking too far ahead. Let him continue to perform like this, let him work on his SR a bit. I loved the way he rescued us against the "mighty" Afgans and hope he will continue to make us proud. I wish him all the best

We used to have solid partnership from these two until we started losting and somehow those lostes became pinned on our opening - non-existent- dilemma. Problem with us is that we don't have to give them enough space, time and nurture to grow.

I think tamim feel more comfortable with him or soumya.he should be in the team

I think among all the partners Tamim has had, I think Kayes is the lesser among the evils. Although I like how Kayes played with maturity in the last game.

Imrul won’t be useful with his tuk tuk batting in English condition.

I still believe BD lost the tri series in Jan 2018 because of not having Imrul.

I would take tuk tuk Kayes to build an innings than get Lamborghini Liton who gets out FAST AND FURIOUS and score no runs and the team is already 1 wicket down!

Can Mithun open?

Mithun has opened in BPL. He should be Tamims partner. I’d stick with Das for a bit. If Mushy doesn’t still want to come up at #3 , play Liton at 3.

Sarkar and Mominul should be out of ODI contention this decade. Mominul be forever.

Can Mithun open?

He has been playing in the middle order lately. No need to change that. Plus, he looks more comfortable against spinners.

Tamim, Imrul, Ashraful, Mushfiqur...that's plenty of experience at the top. More than 600 ODIs between them. All know the conditions well, and have even done well in them.

Imrul is still a question mark imo, assuming ash can perform consistently then I believe he will have a strong chance of coming back for the WC as a top order bat, possibly to open with Tamim, if not then at number 3, probably not lower than that because of all the senior players already in the middle order, unless they bring imrul back up top then ash could bat lower. if imrul is to stick to the middle order then I do think ash may been able to sway the selectors if he has a DPL season like last year and none of the youngsters step up.

This all depends on who they give chances to leading up to the WC, who takes those opportunities and whether or not ash can perform with his chances (even if it’s only at the domestic level).

Mosaddek now seems out of favour so mithun and 8mrul get in ahead of him at this point. Ariful hasn’t really been tried so hard to say if he is now ahead of mosaddek or not.

Soumya coming in puts doubts to whether shanto will be continued with because with Liton, soumya and Imrul in the squad and Tamim coming back, even if imrul is no longer considered for the top order then really what are they going to do with shanto?

So still some positions to be worked out before the WC.

Literally 2 games ago imrul did well. Now imrul didn't score much and everyone suddenly changed their perception of him. Imrul is ahead of mithun and liton when it comes to technique and batting ability.

Imrul is still in it but having seen him score in the middle order it could be worth giving him a middle order spot instead of opening or batting top 3.

Considering they dropped shanto for last match and kept imrul down the order shows the selectors current thoughts, soumya was brought back instead of pushing imrul up so I think they still want one of liton, soumya or shanto to open with tamim for the WC.

Next series will give us a better indication of what they are thinking in regards to these players and positions, so will the final, if imrul bats middle order in the final then I think we will see him get a decent run down there. Unless of course he doesn’t score runs then he might get discarded again.

Tbh Lamboghini Liton gets out so quickly due to his non existent footwork that he is no way an opening batsman. He should be where Mossadek should be IMO.

Given the pool of players we have I think Kayes should open.

Given the fact that Tamim's opening partners could not score runs playing proper cricketing shots even if their life depend on it, I suggest let Soumya given a role to do Jayasuriya regardless of match situation and pitch condition. Even if he clicks 5 out of 10 times then we would be better served.

Imrul Kayes should come at 3.

This is my playing XI for WC2019.

1) Tamim Iqbal ( to play like Tamim Iqbal)
2) Soumya Sarker (to play like Sanath Jayasuriya, regardless)
3) Imrul Kayes v.2 (the best top order batsman statistically since 2015 except Tamim)
4) Musfiqur Rahim ( The best player at 4)
5) Sakib Al Hasan
6) Mahmudullah Riyad ( He should not bat lower than 6 to maximize his potential)
7) TBD (To be determined based on BPL 2019, but not mosaddek as he has no power game and not the same player after his eye injury)
8) Mehedy Miraz ( this kid is still improving fast)
9) Mashrefe Mortaza (I wish him best of luck for his final Hurrah)Z
10) Rubel Hussain (For his extreme pace)
11) Mustafizur Rahman ( to fizzle out the opponents)

Thank you !
