Well from the various accounts of the pitch it seems to me that bowling first on winning the toss is the best option for us. The pitch is supposed to be prettty lively early on, but should ease in a couple of days i.e. it will progressively get more consucive to batting. Of course there is the small matter of winning the toss :).

Nasif

I have a bad feeling :( of toss loosing, sent to bat; and yet again we encounter another batting nose dive crash :(

When 1 of our top order (1-3) scores a test fifty, we have a good chance (60 out of 100) that we score more than 250 - but in order to do that, we have to win the toss and bowl first - as pompous indicated.

Did anyone read the cricinfo preview article on today's test match? I thought it was a very nice article. May be the author did not know that Rana was not playing. Or is he playing? I know lot has been debated about this issue on this board. But I felt even worse reading how international journalists view Rana.

Anyway, here is that link:

I agree that a win in this series is probably unlikely but I find it much more enjoyable to follow the matches with a winning mentality. Given the amount of team spirit we currently have, I am sure if WI players make mistakes, our players will take full advantage and as long as we keep the winning mentality, instead of feeling like losers, we will succeed :fanflag:

fielding first ? hmm....usually that's a should. But to me...bat first. History tells us...we get tired of fielding and that affect the concentration of our batsman (lame excuse but that's the way it is..). As Batting is our moral weakness...BD should go for the batting.

In any case...we all know the end results.

I think our batsmen are going to survive better if they follow these 3 rules:

*Don't go fishing outside off if it is a good ball

*Don't follow balls going down the leg (happened too often in the ODIs)

*When good bouncers are bowled duck and be safe rather than trying to play hook shots

Our top batsmen are skilled enough to play WI bowling attack and I hope they prove this today!

Yes, that is true. But that is the story of day before yesterday.
Tareq will be in the X1 was announced day before yesterday (Enamul Jr. was not preferred for the reason you mentioned).

From the options of Faisal and Rana, Rana was selected as the team mangement wanted to have six batsmen in the squad. rana was considered an allrounder.

bashar usually gets out in the 50s when he is a lot more tentative than he is today. he looks pretty well set, would be unfortunate if he couldn't stay calm and go all the way.

he is 96 away from 2000 runs so hopefully in this test, definitely in this series. javed could get to 1000 if he finds some form

Habibul Bashar won the toss in the first Test against West Indies in St Lucia and opted to bat first. In front of a sparse crowd at Gros Islet, Bashar had no hesitation in batting. He said, "The pitch looks good, and we'll look to bat well and score a few runs."

Brian Lara, West Indies' captain, who returned to the side after a finger injury, said he was happy to be fielding. "I think there's a lot in the pitch for the fast bowlers and we have four of them. I would have bowled first, both captains got what they wanted."

We need to accumulate and hang on to wickets in the second session, doesn't matter if run rates go down a lot. Windies weren't expecting to bowl all day - they will tire out and be ready to be smashed after tea.

Wbone is right, one wicket (esp bashar's )and we will lose 5 more in quick succession...esp right after lunch when we are most vulnerable after eating various local curries...

What's up with the pitch. The comms are saying it will be good for spin later. Windies don't have a front line spinner on their team? Wonder how Rana/Enamul would have done on Day 3 and beyond. Guess we'll never know.

As we all know BD usually start the series very positively, then after lunch things always go wrong. especially Shumon, he has a tendency of getting out around the 60s and probably right after a batsman gets out (the worst possible time). I hope this trend is violated today. But if I were Dav I would tell our batsmen to start, post lunch session, as if it is the begining of the match and they should be challenged to score same number of runs (possibly slower rate) till tea. It's fair to say that WI will regroup after the lunch and will dug in, if BD batsmen take it easy then we will face a very difficult time.

Finally, go BD, pls pls pls don't let us down.

So far 1st session belongs to BD, Habibul & Javed.

But this match is for 5 dayers, 2 innings. 4.5 run rate is not a joke for any team regardless who are they. BD’s present rate is almost 4. And our batting line up not very consistent, very fragile, so after breaking of this pair it might not be smooth to stand any big partnership. I think this the time to keeping in mind it’s a 5 dayers, time also a factor to consume cause draw is also good result for BD.

Habibul was looking tired, bit relaxed before lunch. Hopefully he will be realizing his responsibility and some should inspire him during lunch.
Best of luck Habibul.

Match resumed. 119/1. Good going. Colins Edwards are bowling.

Saleh better get his act together; otherwise, he will get chop in the next test!

Now it will be tested again. I should say it is a 5 day match. To win we will have to take 20 WI wkts, but time is also a factor in test...

29.4 Collins to Javed Omar, OUT: Gone! outside off, uppished shot to point, good catch by Devon Smith going right side, Collins strikes again

Why oh why?

all it matter is to bat this partnership 'til stump. rest will take care of it by itself.

thinking about winning? we should just be thinking about the next over.

amadergaan, yes those are records from the only 2 tests these two have played. 2nd wicket record gone (serious improvement on 4 wasn't it?).

Don't know why javed omar was in such a hurry - we just need to hang around and accumulate in this session... come on.

God damnit!
Javed's role in the team isnt to play flashy stupid shots...rather occupy the crease as long as possible
