Keeping up with the series from last Test, here are my thoughts on the 1st day of the 2nd Test at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

1) Hannan must be totally unable to read Pedro. Most openers will tell you that they observe the seam position of the shiny ball and try to figure out the swing/cut. Pedro bowls the off-cutter (which has had him LBW twice now) and leg cutter with the same upright seam position. The movement is derived from the way Pedro rolls the finger over when he releases the ball. All I can say for Hannan is that he needs to get videos of Pedro's release point and memorise them.

On the same point, Hannan should for the time being, give up on leaves based on bounce. I think he knows where his off-stump is, but he seems to be doing a bad job on reading bounce.

2) Our batsmen have poor technique against spinners. This was pointed out by a John Buchanan report during the tour to Australia, when he pointed out the BD batsmen's difficulty in playing Lehman of all ppl. Last Test we gave Sarwan, Gayle a 9-fer or 10-fer. And now we are making Omari a superman. Omari is tall and gets a Collins Obuya like bounce. That's about all I can say about his spin bowling.

3) Mushfiq & Ashraful were beaten just by the flight. Nothing else.

4) This is one bouncy pitch. Some balls were getting Tennisball bounce. Oh to have a Harmison in our side. I know some people crave for Mashrafee, but I've seen Kowshik from 5 feet away. He'll never be the kind of get-you-out-on-a-dead-deck-with-sheer-pace-or-swing kinda bowler. In my mind, such bowlers (true strike bowlers) will usually get their wickets in bunches. Mashrafee has never had any such 3-4 wickets in 5 overs kind of spell. His self-stated hero is Walsh, and that is the kind of bowler he is. Steady with the occasional ability to surprise. Having said that, would have been quite interesting to see how the BD attack would have been like with him & Baiysha on two ends.

5) Our tail rocks! But Windies is horrible at delivering the killer blow. No self-respecting pace attack should allow, on a wicket such as Sabina, any tail, never mind ours, to add over 100 runs. Again, I blame Lara. As a captain, you can't constantly wear your emotion on your sleeves like Lara does. If I'm a bowler, and after every ball I look up to see my skipper either grimacing or beaming, I start thinking about pleasing him and not focusing on the plan. Lara should watch Ganguly, Waugh or Fleming - those guys are class captains.

6) My rule of thumb for a good Test batsmen is that if you have made 15-20 runs, your eye is in - you should then make at least 50. Didn't quite happen yesterday did it? :(

7) The windies attack with the exception of Best & Pedro, failed to impress. If our batsmen could handle bounce just a little better, we'd be looking at 350+.

8) Our strategy now - see if we can hold their batting off until lunch. Then force em to earn a big lead. (i.e. use up time on a game of attrition). Our 1st innings total is not a winning one. On the other hand, if the Windies batting collapses ... :)

Terrific observations! were you able to watch the game live? I agree with your point of view, and had a pretty general idea of what you said by visualizing the manner of dismissals, reading from cricinfo ball by ball and the audio commentary. Great piece of observation nevertheless. Its mind boggling to me as well about our inability to play spin. Some very non-descript spinners has troubled us more than frontline bowlers over the years. Remember Kaneria? You think they relax their guard? Dhaka circuit is full of slow bowlers. If anything, one would guess that we would fare better against the spinners. Our tail does rock. We have better tail right now than many other test nations. Pak, WI, ZIM, ENG tails are not better than ours in test cricket

Strategy now : I agree our total is not a winning one. Yet. Barring weather, there is no chance of draw here. Either they lose or we win. I doubt if we can survive lunch. If we can, that would be something by itself, and we would surely add another 70 runs for grand total of 340. Thats a bit of a stretch. More realistic score is 280's. The second part: you mention we should play the time game and let em post a big total. If we play that, we will lose for sure. Even Innings defeat might be calling our name. We have to be on the offensive and try not to give them more than 60 runs lead. Occupy the whole of fourth day batting and preferably a session of the third day as well. Then go for the jugular on the fifth day, on a wearing turning pitch. Its good that rana is around. We will need him. His presence can and will pave the way for rafiq to operate in tandem. Bashar must manage his bowlers intelligently and devise strategy for each batsmen. He shouldn't be afraid to throw in rajin and ashraful here and there to break the rhythm and go for a breakthrough. And last but not least, no porota in the morning : they must hold onto all catches that come their way. Godspeed.

Interesting. The reliability of Walsh was partly due to his bowling partners such as Ambrose. Even though Walsh was not one to take those bunch of wickets it provided the Windies the second pacer together with the more lethal Ambrose or Holding to inflict the sort of opening spell that would have been ideal for a venue such as Sabina park.
We donīt have 2 pacers opening a bowling spell or for that matter have yet developed a semblence of one.

Also, Beamer, after this comeback I doubt if we will have an innings defeat.

Even Innings defeat might be calling our name
