The 2nd U19 Test match between BD and England will start on 08/10/04 at Somerset CCC, Taunton. Start time is 10:00 AM GMT. Hope the boys will carry on their majestic forms. The coach said its a batting pitch. We hope to see larger innings from our boys.

Cricinfo will provide live commentary (http://plus.cricinfo.com/db/NEW/LIVE/frames/BDESH-U19_ENG-U19_U19T2_10-13AUG2004.html). Good luck tigers.

Report from coach McInnes on the previous 2 day game:

535 in a day was a good effort, although I was disappointed with the boys as we did not bat the day out, which was our goal. We failed to bat the last 5.5 overs. Some irresponsible batting from the lower order robbed them of some good practice prior to the test.

The English side never attempted to chase the target unfortunately and struggled along to be 298 for 8 from 104 overs at stumps. We were playing it like a limited overs game with 104 over per side, so in effect we won the match, but we would like to have bowled them out.

However given the fact that they made no attempt to score we had to make to game at least interesting by attacking the whole day.

The three boys who will play in the champion's trophy were obviously very happy, but realise they have a job to do over the next few days, so that is our priority right now. Test starts tomorrow, so looking forward to a good performance in this match.

Hope the boys will not disappoint him this time.
Expecting something different and honorable from the boys.
Good luck.

Was it a win or draw?

Since the match was played on the precondition of 104 overs each and not on the basis of 2 innings per side, the result goes in favor of Banglasdesh.

So, BD won by 237 runs.

Still no hint on the strength of this side. Is it the same one that played us in the three day match? If so, is it the U-19 A team?

Is the wicket bowler's friendly or batsmen just throw away wickets? They desperately need to build up a partnership unlike hitting six and then walk back to pavillion. May be the complacency is taking its toll from the last practice match? C'mon boys, cool your heads and stick to the wicket!

chinaman
August 10, 2004, 06:50 AM
They are loosing wickets regularly but I like their attacking attitude. Besides anyone is capable of turning the table. These are the two major things that make them different from the seniors. By this time the seniors might have lost the same number of batsmen with the score well below.

These boys are capable of creating explosive partnership at any order. We just need to keep our faith on them even if they are down once in a while.

Todays pitch isn't behaving the way it was expected. It might dry up as the day advances. Let's hope for the best.

Some people see glass half full, and some people see glass half empty.

I see a vast difference between our national team and our Under-19 team interms of their attitude and potential.

If it were our national team, at 84/4, I would raise the white flag and stop following the score. But with our under-19, there is still hope that they will end up a good enough score with a good run rate, always playing to win not to draw.

I see drastically different attitude (remind me of Australian team) than our national team. I refuse to give up hope for our under-19 to succeed.

Interesting to notice that england U-19 have already applied 8 bowlers to have an early break thru. Their strike bowlers Turner, Munday & Cusden appear to be toothless. I can't see why our boys dont capitalize some odd 300+ as the wicket seems to be dried up and turned more batting friendly.

It is really unrealistic to even think that BD cricket team will improve very soon. My personal opinion is that it will take at least 10-15 years or might be more to be equal with the other test playing nations. We have to wait for the next generation.

We have to consider the socio-economic, cultural, political and genetically heredity of our nations. Good generations can grow up with healthy socio-cultural system. We have to wait for that. There is no Bangladesh who have done any thing remarkable in the international perspective. Young gentleman please be quite.. and wait for the new generation…

Unlike the senior team, the colts of U-19 never hesitate to dispatch the bad ones to the boundary. Do a comparison of a scorecard of the senior team, in a given match, to the u-19 team. You will see heck of a lot more boundaries in the innings of an U-19 game. Sometimes, to tell you the truth, watching the seniors play in ODI's makes one bored.

Ahh! the smart quips! the witty oneliners! we Bangalis are so good at them :) There has been only ONE non-practice match so far. If you think that whole match just went in one direction then I guess I follwed a different game.

As for positive criticism vs. blind following (as posted by Ibrahim): That takes the cake really. I doubt that all the gasps of dissapointment and frustration that was posted on this thread as a wicket fell have tremendous positive impact on the state of our cricket. I mean come on! its ok to vent our frustration (in the previous post I said we should control it somewhat) coz after all we are fans and this is where we should be able to do so, but really to call all of that positive/concrete criticism is stretching it my brother. All I was saying that all the "we are all gonna die...our U19 sucks too so what are we gonna do...there is no hope" etc. was getting a bit monotonous. Once you have been with a message board as long as I have been you would know what I am talking about. :)

Quick update late at night for you all.

Very frustrating day today. I have a few more grey hairs as a result. Anyway, we started quite well as the ball did not swing much in the first hour and the English bowlers attacked which allowed us scoring opportunities early. This is the reason for the high run rate early. They were not many risky shots just drives and leg glances etc as they bowled more balls at the stumps.

After the first change of bowling about 8th over, the English team bowled 2 feet wide of off stump for the rest of the day. The ball really started to swing, a lot and this is still something our batsmen are having trouble dealing with and is the prime reason we are even touring England instead of a cheaper option such as India or Pakistan. We need to experience these conditions as we don't get the ball swinging in Bangladesh.

We also don't face much bowling where the ball is wide and swinging all the time. The aim of the game here is patience and unfortunately we still are developing that aspect of our game. We need to make the bowlers bowl to us, not our batsmen chasiing them. A classic example is Dhiman Ghosh, who in my opinion is probably the best batsmen in this group along with Aftab, We have faced a bowler yet who has troubled him. The only person who gets him out is himself. But he is learning.

Nazim, Nadfi, Mushfiqur< Ashim and Rajib all displayed the patience required to play the longer game and hence we were able to build a score of 273. We will have to bowl well, to gain a lead but there was plenty of dust around the wicket today and some good footmarks developing so our spinners could work well tomorrow.

We had an extensive review this evening of our batting and their bowling and hopefully we can put some things in to practice in the second innings.

Its good that our boys are getting exposure to such conditions at the U-19 level rather than at the national level. This can be tremendously beneficial for us, and thankfully it seems that our coach is utilizing the chance quite well. Now our cricketers need to do the same.

Now that I think about it, during the pre-test status era, often our national team was sent into such circumstances with almost no experince.

Picking Dhiman and Aftab as best two batsmen ahead of Nafis Iqbal is an interesting comment by our coach. Wish we had some footage available to watch these two's batting. Dhiman looks like our future prospect behind the wicket to replace Pilot when time comes.

i was expecting some praisal from coach about mushfiq. a bit surprised to the lack of it. probably its a good idea to not praise him so that they don't grow over confident or think themselves supermans and became another alok kapali.

al Furqaan
August 10, 2004, 08:43 PM
there was no top order collapse this time, and so i think we should be pleased.

we lost wickets at 38, 62, 67, 84, there was a slight collapse but still, it wasnt national team like 50-5 or anything. the promising thing is that there are many players who can score, nafis, nafees, aftab, dhiman, nadif, and mushfiq.

if we can knock england down around 250 (doubtful) then we have a good chance...we should get a draw here...and then...try to win the last test (even more doubtful) for a drawn series.
