i hope we have 3 wins from this series, at least, and that at least one is by wickets...we need to learn to chase.

** could have been more relevant in the first one dayer.. now dropping him means what?? judging someone's ability or form by giving him one chance only?? besides who will replace him.. i do not see any extra BATSMAN in the squad. Besides, when a batsmand can give u 10 overs..that is a bonus.

This time we better not f**k up. We need to win, otherwise we will be completely demoralized and lose the series.

Well, the result will depend on how or batsmen bat, regardless of whether we defend a total or chase one.

The problem with our batsmen in one day cricket is that they don't know how to pace an innings. In test cricket, atleast for Bangladesh, the objective is simple: don't get out. So every over that our batters negotiate without losing a wicket is a successful over. However, with ODIs, things are made more complicated by having to also score runs at a decent rate. Something our batsmen haven't come to terms with yet.

In my opinion, the problem lies with our batters' inability to rotate the strike. We just don't take enough singles. No matter at what stage the game is in, we always need to look to take singles. Its even more important in the middle overs. For us however, when the boundries dry up, our run rate falls to about 2 an over, which is unacceptable in an ODI.

Between the 15th and the 40th overs, our batsmen need to look to take a minimum of four singles every over. Its not that complicated. With mid-off and mid-on back, all they need to do is play straight past the bowler and run the singles. Can't play a safer shot than that, especially to the spinners. If they can get 4 singles every over for those 25 overs, and score a 4 every 4 or 5 overs, which they will obviously do, they will maintain a healthy 4.5 to 5 run rate through those middle overs.

So say somewhere between 65-75 in the first 15, about 115-120 in the middle 25 and we'll have scored around 185-190 in 40 overs, a good platform to go on and get a 250+ score. Also, when you take a lot of singles, you put pressure on the bowlers and the fielders, and you also don't have to get adventurous to score runs, making wicket preservation easier as well. We get ourselves into a hole by not taking the singles, and then we get out when we try to improve the run rate by playing stupid shots.

is there any news for the 2nd ODI team?

Piranha
January 23, 2005, 09:29 PM
the problem lies with our batters' inability to rotate the strike. We just don't take enough singles.

I wonder where this problem came from. This issue has been with us from as far back as I can remember. Our batsmen are simply not used to scoring singles!

Maybe the problem lies with the issue of external motivation/internal motivation that our Coach brought up. Everyone remembers the guys who scores the stylish 4 through the covers, but no one remembers the guy who took a few singles here and there.

Sham
January 23, 2005, 09:40 PM
Yeah, thats probably a part of the reason, maybe even a big part. But on a more fundamental level, I don't think our batsmen are sold on the usefulness of singles. They think that the way to put up a large ODI total is to score a lot of 4s. Also, our poor quality domestic leagues and competitions also probably contribute to this. They get enough 4 balls to put away so they don't need to look to take too many singles. Just wait for the bad deliveries and put them away.

January 23, 2005, 09:45 PM
Kapali unfortunately has become a CURSE! If he is in the side- BD will loose. Enough experiment was being done with Kapali. He did better with 40 runs from his 10 overs. With bat however he is again a flop. We have three more to win if Kapali plays today and we taste OLD wine in NEW bottle- and Zim will be up by clear 2-0 mergin. Let Murtaza replace Kapali.

They lack the techniques of playing straight and controlling the force to hit balls - just whack the ball with max force; this is called "dangulee' style. Hope the U-19s will do better in future than the oldies in terms of basic techniques.

Since his debut Nazmul's bowling has been significantly better than that of chacha.. He got players like Tendulkar, Astle in the first spell. You can use "Wicket taking bowler" as long as u do not measure what is the cost of those wickets..

He is a useful performer, nothing more than that, interesting that this time there was not any thread about predicting his bowling figure..

no one is comparing anyone to anyone. I said "even murali". Meaning even murali, being a better player can get wacked in any given day. Whats more interesting is what you said "thought he was a wkt taking run saving bowler", and you got that conclusion because he gave 17 runs in 3 overs.

He may not be a world class player but he took more wickets than any players in the curent odi team.
