There is a whole gang of SLAs following Rafiq and Moni. Is this a new thing? Was there an abundance of SLAs flooding our small talentpool before Moni? (I mean before Rafiq. Moni had been playing since British Amol)

Enamul Hoq Moni was a really good left arm spinner- just didn't get enough recognition for his performances because cricket wasn't as popular as it is nowadays.
He played for Biman when Rafiq was bowling left-arm seamers to the tailenders in the nets, so i'm sure he also had some input to Rafiq's success!

if it is a serious question then safely, the answer is Ram Chand Goala.. I have seen him, others and ALMOST everything that was played between 85 to 96. Which means I have seen rafique as a left arm seamer and tail ender of biman.. Biman was champion in 88-89, Munir, Bachchu, shanu, mini, shuru, dulu, badsha, pagla jahangir was their line up...the ley was shanu, mini and shuru..
I am mentioning that season because from that point the standard of our game was lifted many folds..
Mohammedan: has labroy, karnain, rana tunga..
Abahani: Fernando, Rodrrigo, Arunlal..
Surjatorun: Kuruppu..
Agrani bank: all strokes.. very young Bulbul, Faruque, selim, Andy
Wari: Samara, Pika..
Biman: no foreign player..
Brothers: kaluwitharana,
Have to mention two particular incident: Where agrani bank chased Mohammedans 150 odds in 30 overs.included a 6 over cover against labroy.. and also (not entirely sure about the ball) a 60 ball 90 of Shanu against mohammedan.

Is Labroy the Graeme Labroy, who played for SL in the 80s ? If so, he must be quite old by now ?
Also, speaking about spinners from the old times, wasn't there another heavy hitting Rafique from the 80-90s who was a spinner as well ?

May be you are talking about Rafiqul Alam?
Rafiq was one of the very few prolific middle order batsmen of early/mid 80's. Although he managed to play only two ODI for Bangladesh, he was a regular member in BD squad to play ICC matches and a star hard hitting middle order batsman in Dhaka league. I remember him smacking Imran Khan for three consecutive 4s in Dhaka stadium. He was an occassional off break bowler.

Yes, off-break is right and has a few ICC wickets to his name. He _was_ a very handy middle-order bat. Stout with very powerful arms. I was at the stadium during the 4's against Imran. The preceding ball was a bouncer that I belive hit him somewhere. The next ball went for a four and the next. On the third one, Imran jocularly increased his run-up by about another 10 paces but went back to his normal. Another 4. This was before the official OD status for Bangladesh.

If I've remembered it right - Feluda was a SLA.

So, it seems like the SLA explosion is a recent phenomenon. I hope its not a temporary thing.

Thanks Nav ! Yes, he is the one. This is the 2nd time you have helped me remember an old one !
I do not remember that over though, but I was at the stadium when Imran K led the Omar Qureishi XI - what a dream it is to make come true - getting to see the great IK and that too during the 80s (1986).
I remember Badshah scring 46 no (?) in the first innings and then the whole BD 2nd innings disintegrating within 53 ! Kinda like nowadays, or atleast during the pre-Whatmore days.
Yes, indeed, regardless of how you see it, BD cricket is on the march, and that too forward.
Long Live Bangladesh.

Oh yes, one other interesting point to note from the BD 2nd innings - The OK xi had set 7 slips, 1 short leg, one cover fielder. It was near impossible to see the bowler running up - with all the Pakistanio rear ends blocking the view.

Rumesh Ratnayeke...
it is note related to thread.. but since we are talking about the old days.. can anyone rememeber mohamedan vs surjatorun in 1986?? mohammedan brought Rumesh ratnayeke and he created havoc with apartrnership with nannu (latter just moved from abahani ayear ago.. and just got the captaincy from raquibul).. But the stroke i am talking about was played by Atahar ali khan when replying to that huge total.. he flicked rumesh ratnayeke for a Zaheer Abbas type of 6!!! was run out in the end scoring a quickfire 50.. what a stroke that was.. I have a feeling one certain banglacricket member called 'OPTIMIST' may rememeber that.
