Bangladesh has nothing at stake except pride
Monday, February 28 2005 15:47 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Almost out of contention after a severe drubbing in their opening match, Bangladesh would be hoping to restore some pride when they take on Central Zone the Duleep Trophy cricket league match at the Railway cricket ground in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The visitors, only the second international team after England 'A' to participate in the country's premier domestic event, would be hoping to put up a much improved show in the next four days, though a win against their in form opponents look most unlikely.

On the other hand, Central can afford to play for a draw and book their berth in the final to be played at Nagpur from March 8 as they have defeated East Zone in their opening league encounter at Gwalior.

The hosts would be missing the services of their skipper Mohammad Kaif as he has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Board President XI against Pakistan at Dharmashala in a three-day tour match starting on March 3.

In his absence, all-rounder J P Yadav would lead the team that boasts of the likes of Murali Kartik, Harvinder Singh and others.

The Bangladesh squad arrived in the capital on Sunday morning and held a training session at the Karnail Singh stadium while the Central Zone team members came together only on Monday morning.

Hi All! Seems like Rajin Saleh is going to miss the match again. He appearantly developed measels (a viral illness), and will be flying back home. Hope he gets well soon, and hope the rest of our guys will put up a good fight tonight.

Good for him. The further someone can stay from this team (in Duleep trophy), the better it is for own career.

Measles! Allah have mercy on him!
It is a tough desease if you are a grown up person.
I got chicken pox myself last year and it was a harrowing experience. (I guess measles would be something similar too.)
Hopefully Rajin would get a good treatment and be ready before the England tour.:(

Nothing much to expect from this match.

Key players (like Rajin/Nazmul) are injured... rest are not in form. A struggling team I would say.

Excuse me but why is this team called Bangladesh in the above article? It is BCB XI.:)

I think they use "Bangladesh" just to associate the visiting team with the country.

No one implies that it is a Bangladesh National Team or anything.

LateCut
February 28, 2005, 01:45 PM
Let us face it. Arguably the original team (without the injuries and sickness) was close to national strength. At least on paper this was a stronger team than Bangladesh-A team. So what is in a name? There would have been no issue if the team performed well against the East team. It seems there is an effort to disengage from this team.

Nice to hear the 3-step treatment. But I worry this treatment seems like [behead the head for headache] specially for a cricket-holic person.

Here goes my steps to treatment:
Step 1: Talk to your pain to as many people as possible
Step 2: Increase the number of patients like yours so that they can share your pain
Step 3: increase your pain-absorbing capacity by watching more and more such defeats

Regards

Hard work for BCB bowlers
Central Zone 248-3
Pallab Bhattacharaya, New Delhi

Bangladesh Cricket Board Eleven bowlers toiled for the second successive match in the Duleep Trophy.

On the opening day of their four-day match against Central Zone at Karnail Singh Stadium yesterday, the tourists were put to the sword by century-maker Abbas Ali who plundered 122 in Central's 248 for three.

The left-hander from Madhya Pradesh rescued his side, which, after electing to bat, had lost two quick wickets for 24 runs.

Ali struck 122 in 205 balls with the help of 20 boundaries and one six. He received fine support from fellow Madhya Pradesh player Devendra Bundela, who was unbeaten on 83 off 238 balls.

They amassed 214 for the third wicket to steer the home side to a strong position.

However, the day began well for the Mohammad Ashraful-led BCB XI, which lost its opening match to East Zone by an innings and 149 runs last week, when Anwar Hossain Munir trapped opener Amit Pagnis lbw for 12 with the score on 16. And eight runs later former Indian Test batsman Sanjay Bangar, who struggled for 70 balls in making 11 runs, fell in the same fashion to Talha Jubair.

During his innings Bangar also suffered a blow on the elbow from Talha but X-rays revealed no serious damage. But the opener continued to bat with a swollen elbow.

Bangar's dismissal brought Ali and Bundela together for their brilliant partnership.

Ali was eventually out five overs before the close when he played a tired-looking shot off leg-spinner Alok Kapali and was caught by Abdur Razzaq at cover.

After the day's play Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore thought that Central Zone had fought back well in the circumstances.

"The big partnership was a bit frustrating after we got two early wickets. The flat track also did no good to our bowlers," he said.

March 2, 2005, 12:09 AM
A draw will not help Central Zone unless they manage the first innings lead. Without that, East Zone will get through to the final.

CZ is basically trying to grind out enough runs to achieve that aim. They figure 350 should be enough, and on the basis of the previous game they have a point.

IMO BCBXI should try to keep them under 300 or thereabouts. It will be interesting to see what the BCB batting does this time. Its much stronger on paper than their bowling.

how does 3 wickets more wickets with the score at 273 lead you to believe they will be all out for 300? it's 317/6 at lunch....any more predictions?

this is again a bowler stacked team, half of them mediocre. the lack of batsman, and in-form ones at that, will hurt when it is our turn to bat.

7out of 9 wickets went to the pacers. Our so called left arm spinners are USELESS! Doesn't matter that they are weak in 3/4 days games or not - they have got enough first class wickets in domestic cricket, and have brains to play in longer version matches. Otherwise, they would not have been playing for BCB XI.

The only wicket going to a spinner has gone to Alok Kapali, a part time leg spinner.

Like "pacer hunt", we should also have something like "batsman hunt". Performance measurestick will be based on how long one can stay at the wicket against all combination of spin and pace attack.

Our current 'star' batsmen are just too impatient to stay at the wicket.

I said so after the first Duleep match as well, give Aftab a good workout since he will be expected to bowl in England. Don't know what Ashraful was thinking, bowling Shahzada. Anyway, its good that Aftab took the opportunity and got wickets. He should be made to bowl for the Chittagong team in the last six rounds of the NCL!

As for this match, Central is obviously going for batting practice, as even a draw would take them to the finals. Our job now would be to make sure that a draw is all they get. Atleast if we can bat out tomorrow and atleast a couple of our batsmen, two out of Ashraful, Nafees and Aftab can score some runs, we won't come back from Duleep empty handed batting wise.

aftab, what a bowler !!!! when he bowls he doesnt just get one or two wickets he gets 4/5/6 wickets in succession. EXTRAORDINARY. one day in a test and he is in form with the ball we may skittle a test team out for below 100, like so many test teams have done to us.

THE TIDE IS CHANGING!!!!!!!

i think???

assuming that the pitch this game was played on is more batting friendly than the ones in england, this should be a great booster for the national team as a whole ahead of the england tour, although the opposition in this case was weaker than what the guys will have to face over there. i'd love to see aftab bowl more in the ncl - he hardly gets an opportunity in international matches. if he does well, that along with a couple of good scores in the ncl and practice matches in england, backed up by the experience of playing there a year ago may as well earn him a test spot, get rid of our number six position problem, and gift us the long awaited medium pace all rounder - ideal for english conditions.

We will Draw remember nafees innings vs Zim, I think he'll do the same he'll face 300+ balls and score a century , as long as one batter stays in the crease that should relax the other players, and all central needs is a draw
