Gautam Gambhir, captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and the Indian ODI side for the West Indies tour next month, has an injury in his right shoulder. An MRI scan Tuesday put a question mark on his availability for KKR’s IPL Eliminator against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede today.
The exact nature of the injury is not yet clear. But fears were expressed that Gambhir might have to miss the campaign in the Caribbean.
Gambhir got injured during KKR’s last league match against Mumbai at Eden Gardens. To recover, he might require surgery, rehab or plain rest. It is learnt that the injury is similar to that of his opening partner Virender Sehwag’s, who played the World Cup and the IPL despite the discomfort.
Should Gambhir miss out, vice-captain Suresh Raina will lead India in the West Indies. The team’s batting, already without Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will be further depleted.
