The way you find if a site is safe is to check if it's secure. To check that, if there is a "s" after http (i.e. https://) then it is a secure site and any monetary transection will be safe in it. If you are still not sure, go on the safe bet, use famous sites like Amazon.com or froogle (google's shopping site).
