May GOD rest his soul in peace.
My uncle Abdullah Al Faruque is a founder of Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendro and mom was a news presenter on radio and TV since the Radio Pakistan and PTV years. My mom always trusted Hamid Uncle to take me to soccer games during the 70s. It was great fun to sit silently next to him as he did play-by-play commentary for the radio.
He would always take me inside a Gulistan gali for postgame nan and Kabab, and introduced me to stadium tea, something I still love. A lovely and approachable man who won the world over with his smile and warmth, I'll always remember of him for his almost childlike love of sports. His electric passion always rubbed off on everyone around him.
His voice on my SW radio kept me connected to things after moving to the US. He will be sorely missed, especially at this age when our so called sports journos seem more interested in polemics, editorializing and flaunting decent writing ability than solid and interesting play-by-play reporting because their fanboys also couldn't care less about context.
