Ideally a pace bowler should start career with good pace (140+) and then develop variety (seam, swing, line/ length etc) as he matures over time.. Wasim Akram, Imran Khan or even our own Mashrafe are good examples of that.

Young medium pacers may have success in English and newzealand pitches, but it's tough going in flat tracks in subcontinent. One of the main reasons why hardly any Indian pace bowler went on to became world class.
