New Indian President
India has elected its first female president, in a move that's being described as an historic step forward for women in the world's most populous democracy.
72 year old Pratibha Patil was elected by MPs in a landslide victory over the country's 84 year old vice-president.
The former lawyer won almost two thirds of the votes and had the support of the governing Congress party, led by India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The role is largely ceremonial but continues an Indian tradition of using the presidency to give disadvantaged communities a high-profile voice.
