Habibul Bashar's name comes into mind. Watching him play in a couple of ODI matches 7/8 years ago, people had got the impression that he was as hopeless as most of the others in the side. Then he played that 140+ inning against England A, got a few runs in first class matches, got into the test side, and the rest is history.
