Not usually. This second one was a very complex patent and we folded in 92 claims. 92 claims is about 60 claims too many. I had suggested that we break the application down to three or four separate ones (and all four were defensible and would have been approved) but the company balked at the 4 times increase in the filing cost. Part of the long delay can be attributed to the complexity of the patent which allowed the examiner to be confused with another technique which he thought invalidates this one. Apples and oranges, but the edification process was time-consuming. But, all is well as it ended well.

The first one took about 2 years but we had experienced patent attorneys at IBM Watson to steer it through.
