Lightbulb 2019 Canada Election: At A Glance

On Oct 21, Canada held its 43rd federal election. Nearly 18 million Canadians voted (voter turnout rate of 65.95%) and Liberals won the minority (157 seats/ridings out of 338), 13 short to form majority govt.

Key Highlights:
1) Liberal party led by Justin Trudeau wins minority in the House of Commons despite Conservatives winning popular votes by a small margin
2) Major provinces like Alberta (AB) and Saskatchewan (SK) fully rejected Liberals
3) As a result, Ontario played a key role in determining who is going to govern for the next 4 years
4) Bloc Quebecois became 3rd major party by winning 32 seats (all from Quebec) while New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Jagmeet Singh dropped to 4th.
