A bit off topic but ...
The Gartner Group is one of the leading information and technology resreach and analyst firms (hmm.. that sounds like I am shilling for them.. I am not). They focus on the information and technology industry.
Similar other firms include Giga, Forrester, Aberdeen, Yankee Group etc..
These firms do several things:
1. Write research reports on and analyzes that drive business and organizational success
2. Provides strategy and business conultation services like MckInsey and others
3. Measures and reports onn industry benchmarks
etc..
The Gartner Magic Quadrant has become a very sucessful "summary" report on a particular industry sector. Companies try to out their position in the quadrant as a marketing ploy. I believe they have even tried to "patent" the quadrant - the axes and the interpretations. Businesses do use the magic quadrant to get a quick market and competitive landscape view.
