Brooks to lead West Indies Under-19s

Sharmarh Brooks, the Barbados batsman, has been named captain of a 15-man West Indies squad for the Under-19 World Cup to be held in Malaysia from February 17 to March 2.

Brooks, who took part in the previous edition of the tournament in 2006, will have Steven Jacobs, the offspinning allrounder from Guyana, as his deputy. The squad includes two 17-year-olds; Adrian Barath, the promising right-hand batsman from Trinidad and Tobago, who has scored 485 runs at 53.88 in his six first-class appearances, and Andre Creary, the Jamaica batsman.

Darren Bravo, the younger brother of West Indies allrounder Dwayne, also finds a place in the squad, so does Veerasamy Permaul, the Guyana offspinner who is expected to play a significant part in West Indies' bowling campaign, considering that he has taken 18 wickets at 30.77 at the first-class level and eight List A wickets at 29.62.

The squad will gather in Barbados for a training session from January 24, before leaving for Bangladesh in time for a series of four one-day practice matches from January 29 to Febraury 8. After this, they fly to Malaysia, where they will play practice matches with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe on February 12 and 14 respectively.

The squad will be coached by Larry Gomes, while Clyde Butts which take charge of managerial duties.
