ZSayeed - it's your assumption that the 1st interpretation follows logically form parsing the paragraph.
A proper parsing leaves no ambiguity. The ranking amongst the tied teams is predicated by the "winner of the most number of matches amongst themselves". Here the anaphora "themselves" clearly refer to the most immediate applicable noun phrase "these equal teams" which in term is defined a priori as "3 or more teams with equal points".
