Severe cold claims 10 more lives


A homeless boy shivers in the bone-chilling cold Monday night at the capital's Kamalapur Rail Station as the cold spell continues in the country.

Star Report Siddiqul Islam came from Kushtia to the port city to sell peanuts.

With his shabby clothes, a dilapidated blanket and makeshift bed under the shed of Chittagong Parade Ground gallery, he drew the attention of local youths.

“He told me that he could not sleep for a moment last night in severe cold,” one of them said. The 58-year-old was trembling perilously.

In the afternoon, he was found dead.

From Monday night to yesterday, extreme cold weather claimed 10 lives across the country -- Siddiqul in Chittagong, four including a minor boy in Chuadanga, two in Rangpur and one in Bagerhat. Two workers passed away while sleeping on a launch at Mawa river port.

In last five days, as many as 1,783 people, mostly from cyclone Aila affected areas, were hospitalised in Khulna, reports our correspondent from the district.

Fahimul Islam Mondol, a doctor of Pirgachha Upazila Health Complex, said about 24 people including four kids, suffering from pneumonia, cold diarrhoea, asthma and other cold related diseases were admitted to the hospital yesterday, our district corresponded reports.

The Met office source said sky remained overcastted almost for the last one week.

In the country, the lowest temperature was recorded in Jessore where mercury went down to 10.3 degrees Celsius. In the capital, it was 12.5 degree C.

From midnight till noon today, dense fog would prevail in different places, especially in the river areas, the Met office said.
