The Bangladesh Cricket Board has finally decided to rein in the controversial technical evaluation committee, curtailing its power of meddling in the selection matters.

The decision was taken at the marathon executive committee meeting in Sylhet, which started in the evening continued up to 3:45am.

The so-called technical committee has already earned a bad name for their interference in the selection of the national team which left the three-member selection committee heavily embarrassed.

Chief selector Akram Khan recently voiced his concern and said he would request the BCB to free them from the influence of the controversial committee.

The BCB took note of his comments – and despite a strong resistance from an influential director, often accused of abusing his power – reduced the authority of the technical committee.

‘The selectors will not need to discuss about the team with the technical committee before they submit it to the president,’ said a director.

‘They have been entrusted with the job and they will do it independently. No one would be able to interfere,’ he said.

The BCB also accepted the request of the selectors to send one of them to Zimbabwe with the team. Previously it was decided that only eight members including the coach and support staff will accompany the team in Zimbabwe.

Selectors were not among these eight people, who will get the hospitality of the Zimbabwean board. The BCB decided that it will bear the travel expenses of a selector and the selectors themselves will nominate him.

A lot of other issues were discussed at the meeting, full of chaos which at times seemed to turn into a scuffle. The meeting failed to approve the committee for the proposed Bangladesh Premier League despite president AHM Mustafa Kamal had his full support for it.

It all turned from bad to worse when BCB director Dewan Shafiul Arefin demanded the resignation of Gazi Ashraf Hossain as the head of GP-BCB Academy, said the meeting sources.

Ashraf, who recently provided the academy a new lease of life with a few crucial appointments including head coach Ross Turner, bowling coach Geoff Lawson and batting coach Alan Campbell, however, was hailed by many other directors for his effort.

The meeting approved the constitutional amendments for formation of regional bodies and election for the post of BCB president. The amendments, however, need to be approved by the councillors in an AGM.

The meeting nominated director Shafiqur Rahman Munna as head of delegation and approved the appointment of head coach Stuart Law and his support staff.

It also approved the promotion of Nizmam Uddin Chowdhury from deputy general manager to general manager.

The meeting decided to form an anti-corruption unit for the domestic cricket and send delegates to India, England and Australia to discuss bilateral cricket series within the next FTP cycle.

It was also decided to bring ‘A’ team players under the board’s salary structure
