Actually, if the ball stops after the bowler releases it, it's still a legal delivery (so long as it doesn't bounce more than twice) and the batsman can hit it if he wants to. I remember one of India's spinners (Bhajji probably) delivered a ball that slipped out of hand and landed on short mod on. It didn't bounce. every-one thought it was a dead ball but McMillan was the batsman and he said hang-on, I can hit this. He did a golf swing to long on to collect a couple and it was still the most bizarre 2 runs I have seen.
