Default IT Gurus: Need your help on this...

I am using UK based BT's broadband internet service. I don't need to use any modem/router myself. All I do is plug my ethernet cable into a LAN socket on the wall. Now I have been trying to access TCP ports while running bittorent/mirc. What happens is my internet connection 'dies' in a minute and then when I try to restart/turn off my PC XP hangs! Switching on the pc reconnects it to the internet but the problem remains. By typing in default gateway address into a browser, I checked that my common ports like 6881, 6667 etc are all blocked.

Although I can view status of various network ports, I am unable to log in in order to unblock these ports. SO my question is, do i have the right to change settings on this type of 'web based' firewall or is it upto the ISP's network admins?
