Did you know...
That mantis shrimp has 12 color photoreceptors in its eye?

While listening to RadioLab couple of days ago, I learned that of all known species mantis shrimp has the highest number of photoreceptors, a total of 16; of which 12 are for color. Remember high-school biology? If not, well, we only have 3 color receptor cells (RGB cones). Think of number of colors, shades and tones that these tiny creatures could see! Also, while thinking about this shrimp, know that when you throw a red and a green ball at your dog, it can't see any difference; only sees two green balls, i.e dogs have only green and blue (GB) cones. If you want to know the possible reasons for such depth in mantis' eye, check out Wiki entry on this.
