I think Riyad lacked confidence then, but the vice captaincy and some excellent batting performances may be the difference. His match-winning innings against England in the WC was a turning point for him.
I feel he is comfortable not being a front line batsman because if he fails where he bats then he isn't expected to do well. As a top 5 batter he would.
It's just now a matter of whether he WANTS to step up (as I believe he can) or if he still has the same mentality from Jamie's days...
