Funny how Gilly couldn't break the NSW side during his early days because Phil Emery was in the side. Emery was a good keeper but had a mediocre FC average of 26. Emery was seen as the master and Gilly was looked upon as a rookie. By moving to Western Australia, it was the best thing Gilly could have done for his career. After that he turned out to be one of the greatest keepers of all time after he made big runs in FC cricket which catapulted him into the national team ahead of Australia's favourite Ian Healy. He could have been Phil Emery's understudy for NSW for all of his career, for all we know. Possibly he could not have even played for Australia if he stayed at NSW... how weird would have that been that potentially one of the best keepers in World Cricket could have been the 2nd choice keeper for his state team all his career...
