As for the writer and those who still wondering, it is a cultural thingi. US wants to dominate a sport world wide. The interest goes out the window when they can't. Sponsorship, viewership (TV ratings) etc. Look at Tennis now. The moment Sampras, Agassi left the screen... When Tiger Woods dominance was over... Armstrong retired... TV rating went down next to nil in all of those sports.

Timing of the world games: Be it Soccer, or any other sports around the world, not convenient for US viewers. Thus the popularity hurts.

Sports that is popular in US also hurts world viewing because of the timing as well.

Look at the ads money on Super Bowl (times four - for every four years) and compare that with WC Football's ad. NCAA Football or as we say college football BCS games can't be compared with any other sports, period. In terms of revenue, popularity. College Football stadiums: Univ of Tennessee holds seating 110,000+. So does Michigan University, Ohio State, Pasadena (USC home games), Univ of Nabraska ... and several more. All sold out EVERY game which is 7/8 games a year. Only Eden Garden comes to my mind which can be compared and it remains half empty most of the time.
