Meherpur is also well known for special mutton. Goats are neutered nice and early and fed only jackfruit leaves, contributing to the unique tenderness and flavor. In the old days, legend has it, some of the more promising kids were raised separately for the 12 Bhuyans and fed only tuberose (Rajanigandha). The Mughal Nawabs continued the tradition as did the British and their puppets later on.
